    Extractions: The story told in "The Patriot" is fairly straightforward Hero Myth : Mel Gibson's character Benjamin Martin is cast out of his home and normal life by war that literally comes to his front door; he struggles to claim the boon of freedom, which he wins for all, after which he is able to return home. One of the last lines of the film is spoken to Martin by men sitting on the framework of a home they are rebuilding makes this very clear: "Gabriel said if we won the war we'd build a whole new world. We figured we'd start right here with your home." One of the interesting things about this particular telling of the Hero Myth, however, is that it explores a new way of telling it about the Revolutionary War that incorporates the new paradigm of racial diversity moving through American culture. Previous generations of Americans pictured Colonial militia and regulars as white men, in large part because of the prevalence of the cultural paradigm "the only real Americans that matter, now or historically, are white." Producer Dean Devlin said that when he and other "The Patriot" filmmakers learned from Smithsonian historians that approximately 8% of the American army in the Revolutionary War was black (Entertainment Weekly, July 14, 2000), they decided to incorporate it into their story. This percentage is equivalent to about 1 out of 13 soldiers a figure that is historically accurate but jarringly at odds with the mythic image most Americans hold in their minds about the appearance of American revolutionary troops.
