I have tried to produce a web site that is beneficial to all aviculturists. Parrot Haven Aviary specialise in Handreared Baby Parrots. All babies are bred at Parrot Haven Aviary and reared in a family environment, our baby Parrots are completely at ease with other family members and pets. Each baby has a birth certificate and literature containing all the information needed to ensure each pet Parrot stays healthy, happy and free from stress. Our baby Parrots make the ultimate companion bird and the perfect pet. Parrot Haven Aviary is a commercial aviary owned and operated by my wife Lyn and myself (Garry Lee.) Parrot Haven Aviary is devoted to producing only hand reared companion parrots for the companion and pet parrot owners of Australian. Our babies have been incubated and hatched in our incubation room, or raised by their parents until they are around 10 days of age. They are then removed from the nest for hand rearing by us. All of our babies are fed hand rearing formula (commercially made) from a spoon, this allows for more human contact and a much quieter, loving and devoted companion in the end, not afraid to be handled by people. Lynette and I fuss over our babies as though they were our own children, so much that we use the phrase "mummy and daddy" when talking to them (no we are not totally mad, but totally devoted to our babies and the enjoyment that they can and do give us while raising them.)

It will very likely die an unpleasant death soon after release. We can arrange for it to be adopted or used for breeding purposes in a humane and natural manner. Pet birds taken in by us receive medical care, a good diet, spacious cages,and toys. But most of all, they get LOVE ! We understand that you may have spent a lot of money to purchase your bird. You may feel that you have to get a return on your investment. All we are asking is that if things just haven't worked out, PLEASE don't make the poor bird pay the price by being neglected either physically or emotionally or put in a less then perfect home. Cockatoos originated on the islands of the South Pacific: Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, New Guinea, and Australia. There are over 40 varieties of Cockatoos. The most commonly known are the Greater Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, the Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, the Lesser Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, the Citron, the Umbrella Cockatoo, the Major Mitchell, the Galah or Rose Breasted Cockatoo, the Moluccan, the Goffin and the Bare Eyed Cockatoo. Probably the most recognized is the Sulfur Crested Cockatoo, Major Mitchell and the Galah or Rose Breasted Cockatoo. The Cockatoo is the feathered teddy bear of the parrot world. They love to be touched and scratched on the back of the neck by their chosen human. Their great sense of curiosity also makes it most amusing to watch a Cockatoo examine any new object placed in it's cage. However, these playful creatures possess an enormous amount of dexterity and as a result, locks on cages are often a challenge happily accepted and conquered. An additional characteristic of this parrot is its vanity. Cockatoos seem to know just what a beautiful picture they present and they will display their wings and toss their heads to achieve positions designed to give an observer the most beautiful possible view. At such moments their crests are usually raised and displayed for the edification of admirers. Unfortunately, if one should fail to notice this display or if the owners back is turned, a loud scream will immediately attract his and everyone else's attention.

    Extractions: by John McGrath © Information Covered: Article DESCRIPTION A stocky cockatoo close in size to the familiar Galah (Eolophus roseicappillis), with soft forward curving crest. (The scientific name of the Galah has been changed to Cacatua roseicapilla since this article was written - Ed). Basically a sooty grey-coloured plumage. The adult cock bird crest, forehead cheeks are red in colouration. His flight feathers appear dull olive-grey when not in flight. Chest feathers are lightly barred with a reddish light orangeish hue. Under tail coverts are barred yellowish orange. Feather of the mantle edges tinged light grey whitish. Tail feathers grey. The adult hen lacks the red of the cock on the face and crest, except that now my hen is over ten years old, she is showing a faint red tinge to the very tips of the feathers of her crest. She shows a lot of red tinging to the edges of the feathers to the chest and abdomen-under tail coverts barred as per cock bird. Mantle feathers edged in colour similar to cock birds, and tail is grey.

    Extractions: SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOOS by Steven Armstrong I had been looking for a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo hen for quite a while to put with my 4-year-old cock bird. He is a lovely big bird, in perfect feather and quite a character in the rain. In April, I heard of a lady in Brisbane wanting to sell a hen that had been working the nest in previous years but had not laid yet. I went down and had a look at the cockatoo and decided to bring her home. I put her in one of those Ansett dog crates lined with news-paper and we headed for home. We wouldn't have been travelling more than twenty-five minutes when she decided it would be a good idea to eat the newspaper. It was hilarious to hear her shredding the newspaper on the back seat. She made such a mess, but I suppose it helped with the stress of travelling. I put her in quarantine for a couple of weeks and on one sunny Sunday morning I put her in with the cock bird. She was rather timid and took a few days to find her feet and settle down but what was most amazing was that within ten minutes of putting her in, the cock bird was attempting to mount her and after a few failures, he was mating her!

I have always been captivated by all types of birds, probably since the day my Dad came home and gifted me with a little yellow parakeet which we named Buttercup. From there I progressed to cockatiels, and then on to the larger parrots. Since I seemed to have a gift with birds, I thought I'd try my hand at breeding. Most people start small, breeding parakeets or cockatiels and then graduate to the larger species. Not me, I jumped right in with a pair of Congo African Greys! They are my personal favorite because of their intelligence and great talking ability. With beginner's luck they bred within a few weeks for me! From there I researched information on Macaws and Cockatoos, and decided to try breeding them. Since parrots are very difficult to breed in captivity, the others did take years to reproduce, but my patience and perseverance paid off. I currently successfully breed Congo African Greys, Medium Sulphur Crested Cockatoos, Umbrella Cockatoos, Moluccan Cockatoos, and Green Wing Macaws.

There are 18 species of Cockatoo, ranging in size from 12" to 30" in length. The majority of Cockatoos bred in the UK are probably hand reared, as they prove to be very suitable pets, with many endearing antics. During the mid 1960s, the Australian Authorities decided to stop all exports of their wild fauna. With such a decision being made, the bird world had to develop new breading techniques and diets in order for the captive stock to reproduce and establish themselves. Cockatoos as a family are classifies by their most distinguishing feature - the moveable crest on their head. The largest member of the group, the Palm Cockatoo has a large crest which is made up from elongated, backward curving feathers. The smallest member of the family, the Cockatiel, has a thin slightly narrow crest and is the only Cockatoo to have long tail feathers, the remainder of the group have short tails, compared with the overall body length. Cockatoos are a very successful group of birds, and in the wild are particularly successful when breading. They can be found on many islands in the Pacific, ranging from the Philippines to the Australian mainland and Tasmania. Some species and sup-species are endemic to small islands, so they are coming under an increasing threat from the human population competing for the same land. Deforestation has accounted for some Cockatoo populations being severely reduced in numbers.
