The following proposition is an attempt to develop a classroom management strategy. To begin with, I will describe the basic characteristics of the students I plan to teach. Then I will go into some depth elaborating on the classroom management techniques that I think will be most effective in the class I plan to teach. The age of the students I plan to teach will range from 15-19 years old. There will probably be a wide gap between students who are computer literate and those who are not. Also, the students will vary with regard to their interest in Digital Media Arts some will be eager to create, and others will care less. With such a diverse population of students, it will be imperative that I teach in a style that is versatile and inclusive. Earning the Respect of the Students Part of being an effective teacher is earning the respect of students. Teachers can earn the respect of their students in several ways. Some of the ways I will attempt to earn their respect include: careful and thorough planning of the topics being taught, using a discipline strategy that doesnt degrade their self-esteem, providing appropriate rewards, giving them sincere praise, and presenting clear expectations. By demonstrating a teaching attitude that embodies a sense of caring, firmness, enthusiasm, democracy, and high expectation, a teacher can demonstrate their commitment to students. I am not saying this is a flawless approach, but it seems like a logical approach towards achieving the desired effect.

Discipline is only a small part of classroom management. How seriously you take this page will determine whether you have a chaotic or a well oiled learning environment, whether you will leave each school day frazzled and angry or happy and successful. Discipline: can be seen by students as a DARE to be broken, it concerns how student behave and has penalties and rewards. Procedures: is a DO, a step to be learned, and concerns how things are done. There are NO penalties or rewards. It is the procedures that set the class up for achievement to take place. Wong says there are four reasons that procedures are important: (page 170) Classroom procedures are statements of student expectations necessary to participate successfully in classroom activities, to learn, and to function effectively in the school environment. Classroom procedures allow many different activities to take place efficiently during the school day, often several at the same time, with a minimum of wasted time and confusion.

Extractions: Lynn Hoyer is a teacher and coach at Rancocas Valley Regional High School. On March 22, 2002, Rowan University's Education Institute sponsored a conference on Curriculum Issues that Affect Classroom Management. Participants indicated the information presented was quite useful to new educators, as many sessions covered topics relevant to teachers who are always dealing with a myriad of classroom management issues. All the presenters were highly qualified, and they skillfully "educated" participants on topics such as Management Issues in the Inclusion Classroom, Curriculum Development as it Affects Classroom Management, and Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum, just to name a few. The professional manner of everyone involved from Rowan University made it a successful workshop. Without a doubt, Dr. Richard Fopeano, the keynote speaker, was an excellent choice by Rowan University. He was not only informative about how teachers "pass-on" information to students, but his energetic manner was invigorating. Even though some of his ideas were taught during basic teacher education courses, he successfully stressed that teachers should "check their own plates" before cluttering their students' plates. Many educators are so concerned with pounding information into students that they forget how their views and feelings influence the way they teach and manage students. Dr. Fopeano's creative techniques stressed to the conference participants that they should think about themselves and how they learn in order to truly get the best from their students. His ideas are timely reminders that in the long run will help students learn better and teachers who follow this simple plan will in essence manage their classrooms better.
