Relevant Literature Overview Unlike nonclassroom settings where the emphasis is on supervision in unstructured activities, classroom environments are teacher directed, instructionally focused, and group oriented. In addition, teachers have high degrees of autonomy which gives them opportunities to make individual decisions about classroom management strategies, curriculum selections, instructional design, etc. In classrooms, both behavior and instructional management practices are combined to enable teaching and learning to occur. Although teacher autonomy is desirable, some level of consistency with the school-wide and nonclassroom system practices is needed to ensure that students establish clear discriminations about desirable and undesirable behaviors across all school environments. In addition, classroom events, for example, have carryover effects into nonclassroom environments, and vice versa, and teaching and nonteaching staff members must work predictably to ensure consistency. When establishing classroom systems of positive behavioral support, the goal is to extend and support the school-wide system so students can be successful across variations in curriculum, instructional style, classroom routines, and settings. Consistent classroom management systems facilitate communications among students, staff, and parents; increase the consistency with which behavior is handled by staff across all setting; ease transitions when students move within and across different school settings; and support high rates of academic engagement and achievement. The ultimate goal is to increase predictability for students, staff, and visitors.
