Extractions: Margo Thunderbird, Native American writer A If we really think about it, every aspect of our society and our institutions are set up to promote a culture that is by all means not representative of the whole. Yet it can easily exploit other cultures, adding it to their imaginary melting pot, and making it their own. On account of centuries of assimilation due to cultural imperialism and oppression, many ethnic groups allow it to happen. And Mexican-Americans are clearly not the exception. As a Chicana it was disheartening, but what I took from it was that maybe for one night every Latino student or worker felt accepted. Especially in a campus like Chapman, when the only time you experienced something remotely Mexican or Latino was the Americanized enchiladas served in the cafeteria or in banquets for the beloved donors President Doti would usher in. Most of the time, these pitiful imitations of one of the great dishes in the world was all we had that represented us.

Extractions: With a loud stomp of the feet, South Tucson's Grupo Folklorico Tapatio will kick off Cinco de Mayo for residents all over Tucson. "We are the only group in the country to combine live performers and Mariachi music," said Tapatio program coordinator, Patricia Klein Moreno, who is also an administrative assistant for child psychiatry at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. "This will be the first time the one-year-old group will meet the Decanos, who have been together 30 years with their director, Sergio Valle," Moreno added. Lalo Baca's daughter Veronica Baca, 17, practices with Oscar Coronado, 18, in preparation for the Cinco de Mayo festival. Valle, a Guadalajara native, came to Tucson to teach another Folkloric group. "It is a crazy thing, I came to teach one group and wound up teaching another," said Valle. Now he spends half the year in South Tucson and the other in Guadalajara. "Six dancers and Moreno, who was affiliated with the group as well, came with me to start something new," said Valle. Among the six dancers were a trio of brothers and sister whose dad, Eduardo "Lalo" Baca, helped to make Grupo Folkrorico possible. Lalo and his upholstery business, Baca Enterprises at 2100 S. Fourth Ave., donated the vacant lot next door to the group to build a studio at 238 E. 31st St.. Prior to that, the group practiced in Lalo's carport.

Extractions: Background: Cinco de Mayo is a commemoration of the 1862 battle of Puebla. It celebrates the courage of the Mexican people over heavy odds. The untrained, native forces , with inferior weaponry and smaller numbers won a victory against the powerful French army. Despite their victory in that battle, the French eventually won the war and ruled until 1867 until President Benito Juarez was restored to power. A misconception about Cinco de Mayo is that it is Mexican Independence Day. It is not. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. Even though Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday, it is actually observed on a much larger scale in the United States where it has become a way to emphasize and learn about Mexican culture and heritage.

Extractions: 111 Cedar Street, Corning, NY 14830 APRIL 18, 2002 ROCKWELL TO CELEBRATE CINCO DE MAYO WITH FESTIVE BRUNCH AND STORIES OF MEXICO On Sunday, May 5, 2002, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Rockwell Museum of Western Art will offer a festive celebration of Cinco de Mayo , with a "Ranchers Brunch," music, and authentic Mexican story telling. The celebration is designed to provide an opportunity for the community to experience the culture, sounds, and tastes of Mexico on this traditional Mexican holiday. Cinco De Mayo, translated literally as "the fifth of May", commemorates the defeat of the French army by Mexican soldiers at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. Often mistaken for Mexican Independence day, which is actually September 15, 1810, the holiday has come to symbolize freedom, unity, and Mexican patriotism. The holiday is widely celebrated in the southwestern and western United States in cities and towns where significant Mexican populations exist. The Ranchers Brunch at the Rockwell will feature such festive items as breakfast tacos (tortillas, eggs with red and green peppers confetti, cheese, and picante sauce), ranchers' hash, corn fritters, and chicken enchilada soup. The brunch will be catered by the Cantina, the southwestern eatery next door to the museum. Visitors coming to the museum for the brunch can enjoy eating their meal in the museum's Education Center on the second floor, where brunch will be served, or if weather permits, can take their sumptuous southwestern vittles to the Third Floor Terrace and enjoy a view of the rolling hills of Corning!
