Hubbard won prominence with his book "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health" (1950), in which he outlined a form of therapy for curing emotional and psychosomatic illnesses and enhancing life. WORLDWIDE MEMBERSHIP CHURCH GOVERNMENT : A tight knit circle of committed adherents, with numerous "auditors" and "counselors" to assure understanding and practice of Scientology's secrets of the "Thetan" and "Dianetics." MAJOR DOCTRINAL EMPHASIS : Subjects were trained by therapists called "auditors", to increase the power of the conscious mind and subdue the influence of "engrams", which are painful impressions of past experiences that confuse the "reactive", or unconscious, mind. Hubbard's work took on a religious dimension with the publication of Science of Survival (1951), which explained the religious philosophy of Scientology. Scientology teaches that human beings are immortal spirits called Thetans, which is derived from the Greek word theta, meaning life. It also practices a ritual known as auditing. A device called an "E-meter" is used to guide individuals during auditing and help them to locate precise areas of spiritual difficulty.

Ron Hubbard, called "advanced technology" could be misunderstood by people who have not gone through the extensive series of Scientology courses that help church members achieve "higher consciousness." Some members pay little or work in return for the courses while others reportedly pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. "You have to go up certain levels in Scientology in spiritual awareness," says Goodman, "and then you're ready to attain that knowledge and that's the way it works and we're trying to protect that." Lerma sent a copy of the secrets to the Washington Post, which also got copies from the California court case. The Post article described a church doctrine which includes a galactic federation ruled by a being named Zenu. Zenu, according to the Post, solved an overpopulation problem 75 million years ago by transporting excess people to the Earth.

Now the phones are ringing again but this time there's a good chance they'll be answered by a Scientologist. In a bizarre twist of fortune, the organization that was once the most vocal critic of Scientology is now owned by a member of the controversial church. "I think this is going to be devastating," said Cynthia Kisser , former director of the Cult Awareness Network. "People are going to believe they're going to talk to an organization that's going to help and understand them in their time of crisis, and in fact, it could be a pipeline of information directly to the group they're most afraid of." Since 1991, 50 lawsuits were filed against the Cult Awareness Network by people who were somehow connected with the Church of Scientology, said Kisser. Most were dismissed but one produced a judgment of nearly $2 million against the network.
