Extractions: There are many traditions surrounding the arrival of the New Year, some of which will be covered in our New Year special feature. Many focus on the doorway of the house. If the first person to cross the threshold is a tall dark man carrying coal, salt and a cake, you will have good luck through the year. This is known as first footing. This night and the following night are when wassailing used to take place. The word wassail comes from the Anglo Saxon words Waes Heil - meaning be whole or healthy. People drank each other's health from a large wassail bowl, filled with a drink such as "lamb's wool" made of hot ale or cider, nutmeg, and sugar with roasted crab apples. In some parts of Britain trees and bees are still wassailed - to ensure a healthy crop. Having drunk the tree's health, people fire shotguns into the branches. Different areas had different wassail songs people would sing to the tree. Here's one from Worcestershire, England:

Extractions: To Linda Linn's Kentucky Home and ghost stories II Willy the freed slave email sent Bobby Mackey's bar. email sent I live in Newport, Kentucky (Campbell County) about 2 miles from Bobby Mackey's bar. I have lived in this area all of my life and I have always been interested in the haunting stories of the bar. He also said that many times during the night the cars in the garage that they were working on would start up and the horns would honk for hours. He said there was nothing he could do because the doors on the cars would be locked and the keys were no where to be found. He said the next morning when he would return to the garage from his upstairs apartment the keys to the cars would be on the hooks where they were always kept and the car doors would be unlocked. Being the Kentucky hillbillies they are, my dad and several other guys who worked at the auto shop took and old car and raised it with a wrecker and had the entire car wrapped with strands of christmas lights and a completely decorated tree on top of the car. He said a few days after they did this one guy left to get some lunch and when he returned he went into the garage and starting yelling the other guys for taking the the decorated car down. None of them knew what he was talking about. They all went outside and the chains they had raised the car with were cut and the car was on the ground with the christmas tree still standing on top of it and not one bulb was broken. They were all puzzled because they had not heard a thing and wondered how the car fell to the ground without damaging the christmas tree or lights or making any noise. My dad said they all just kind of looked at each other and went back inside and never really talked about it.

Extractions: http://harris-donahue.tripod.com Index Genre Childrens Author Phyllis J. Burton Date Title A Doll for Christmas A short story containing 1,277 words A Doll for Christmas Chloe felt excited. The doll in the shop window was smiling at her. 'Mummy?' she said pulling at the sleeve of her mother's coat. 'Yes dear?' 'Do you think my letter reached Father Christmas in time?' It was the day before Christmas Eve and five-year old Chloe was standing outside the local toy shop, with her mother. They were waiting for the bus: it was late. 'I'm sure it did, darling.' Chloe was bored and she kicked a stone and sent it spinning into the gutter. 'Don't do that, Chloe darling?' her mother said. 'You'll wear your shoes out and I can't afford to buy you any new ones before Christmas.' Chloe stared hard at the toy-shop window. It was lit up just like a Christmas tree. She pressed her nose up against the pane of glass. It felt cold, but she could see the thing that she wanted more than anything in the whole wide world much more clearly that way. The little doll sat on a box looking at her with just a hint of a smile on her face. If only I could have her for Christmas, she thought, 'cos she's so pretty. 'Mummy?' she called out suddenly.

SOOOOO, if you can stay with me as I walk with you through events in my life, and meet the people who influeneced me, bad and good, kind and gentle, caring and understanding, you will know a little bit more about me, and who I am today. O.K. Lets GO!! Some of this should have gone into the first chapter, so for those of you who have not read it, this is a small introduction. My younger brother and sisters and I received a letter from our mom, who we had not seen or heard from in over 10 years. We were foster children. We were placed in foster care a few days before CHRISTMAS 1971. I had just turned 6 years old, and had 3 younger sisters, and 1 younger brother. One day before Christmas, 1971, a young couple agreed to take all 5 of us together. We were allowed to see Gramma and Grampa O'Rielly on the weekends, My mother suffered from Grand Mald seizures, and my dad had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and we were told that they were to sick to see us.

Extractions: After a class lesson to develop a story outline, the following story was written by Mr. Widdowson, while the class were producing their own (see the stories on the Christmas Story pages). The children then produced a cartoon to illustrate a section from the story, and these were put together to form a school book. Below you can read the story, as well as see the illustrations. It was the night before Christmas and all around the world children were looking to the skies to try to catch a glimpse of a large red sleigh pulled by eight magical reindeer. Finally, they yawned, and reluctantly, the children went to bed, to dream of the next day. Way, way North, in the coldest country known, a workshop was bustling with activity. Elves of every size, colour and shape were quickly wrapping up the last of this years toys for the good boys and girls of the world. The biggest Elf looked at the clock. The large wooden clock said eight oclock - that left only two hours before the boss would be leaving to deliver everything. It was time to get the sleigh ready. A group of Elves left the workshop and wandered across the crisp, white snow towards the garage. They entered, and lit a small lantern. Its warm orange glow illuminated a large green sheet. Carefully two of the elves began to pull back the sheet. Beneath the sheet a bright red sleigh gleamed. Its silver skis glistened, its golden handles glowed. The Elves began to polish the paint ready for a busy night ahead.
