The University of Chicago's Project for American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language (whew...no wonder they use an acronym!) was created as a database of words from written French. It now contains over 150 million words ranging from the 17th to the 20th centuries. A great tool for French scholars and researchers, as well as lovers of language. An extensive collection of public domain French literature, in French. Put together by a Spanish teacher, this is an impressive group of foreign language links. There are French, German, and Spanish collections, including newspaper and magazine links in all three languages. There's also a chat section, and one for homework help. This is "An Etymological Chinese-English Dictionary" which would be very useful to students of Chinese. The point and click translation method and excellent use of frames make the site a pleasure to visit, and the background information is interesting even if you're not studying Chinese.

Extractions: [Originally a panel discussion paper at GCCCE'97, Guangzhou, Peoples' Republic of China, May, 1997] A totalistic approach whereby tools and resources are more open and integrable as described in [Yeo, 1995a] can be taken today but it demands much time, effort and expertise in the design and use. One example of the open architecture design is demonstrated in the story maze puzzle . The objective of this puzzle is to test a learner's reading ability. A short Chinese story is hidden in a maze grid of Chinese characters with the first word of the story text highlighted. The learner is supposed to find a path through the maze which logically forms the story. As he proceeds, he has to decide on the correct Chinese characters that will make up the story. To use the story maze, a teacher could input a lesson passage to first have the words segmented, select the word phrases to practice, and have the homographs and homophones looked up in an associative resource base. The passage could then be run through the story maze interspersed with the homographs and homophones as noise characters. Internet, the Global Warehouse

Extractions: H A L L O W EE N October 31 We love Halloween! It's one of our favorite holidays. We were surprised to hear, in Austria, they don't celebrate Halloween. Instead, they celebrate a holiday we did not know existed called Rauhnachte. A long time ago, farmers used to believe, on Rauhnachte, animals in the barn could speak and had other magical powers! An American teacher, teaching in Austria, found his students surprised that he had never heard of Rauhnachte! He found it a fascinating holiday. But, since his own children also wanted to enjoy Halloween, he set up his yard for some Halloween Fun ....this site shares what happened! The ancient Celts believed, on October 31st, the spirits of the dead would come back to earth, in the form of an animal, often in the form of a black cat, to be reunited with loved ones, one last time. Today, silhouettes of black cats are used as Halloween decorations, and everyone tells spooky tales!
