I have never had a question go So, what have I learned? First and foremost, do NOT turn your child forward facing until they are at least 20 lbs AND one year of age. The reason for this is that an infants NECK BONE structure is not strong enough to withstand a forward facing crash before one year of age. Muscle control/strength has absolutely nothing to do with this. And please, dont be frightened by the thought of your rear-facing baby breaking their legs in a crash because their feet touch the back of the seat, even if your pediatrician has advised turning your baby around early for this reason. There is nothing to back up this claim, and even if it COULD and WOULD happen, is a broken leg really worse than a broken neck and/or spine? Babies are actually safest rear-facing until they reach the limits of their rear-facing convertible seat, even past the one year and 20 lb mark. You can read more about this topic at

The Campaign - launched in May 1996 by the automobile and insurance industries - was a response to a November 1995 NTSB urgent recommendation to establish a nationwide multi-media campaign to educate the public about the dangers that air bags pose to children. In 1996, the Safety Board issued a study on child safety in passenger vehicles that included the following recommendations: All children under 4 should be required to be in child restraints that are appropriate for their age, height and weight. Children ages 4 through 8 should be required to use booster seats Substitutions of lap/shoulder belts should not be permitted for children under age 8.
