She is Eastern Siouan from the Saponi (Haliwa-Saponi) Tribe located in Halifax and Warren Counties of Eastern North Carolina. The tribe's name originates from the two counties of which the members live (Halifax and Warren counties) along with the name of the known native people that were of that area (the Saponi). The Tribe was severely impacted by the beginning of European contact in the United States.
