Extractions: It can be quite correctly argued that life exists on Earth because of the abundant liquid water. Other planets have water, but they either have it as a gas (Venus) or ice (Mars). Recent studies of mars reveal the presence sometime in the past of running fluid, possibly water. The chemical nature of water is thus one we must examine as it permeates living systems: water is a universal solvent, and can be too much of a good thing for some cells to deal with. Water can exist in all three states of matter on Earth, while only in one state on our two nearest neighboring planets. This unequal sharing of the electrons results in a slightly positive and a slightly negative side of the molecule. Other molecules, such as Ethane, are nonpolar, having neither a positive nor a negative side. The difference between a polar (water) and nonpolar (ethane) molecule is due to the unequal sharing of electrons within the polar molecule. Nonpolar molecules have electrons equally shared within their covalent bonds.

There's all sorts of fascinating stuff! Everything from the role of the waters of hydration in antibody-binding to the effect of solvation for stabilizing protein structure to the dependence of water's dielectric and pH on temperature and pressure. This last topic is particularly exciting as we learn more about the thermophiles living at deep sea vents. But most importantly, because the aqueous environment influences all of the chemistry that takes place in it, when you are discussing water you get to address just about anything, while still ostensibly focusing on the substance itself. And just to be sure we start out on a provocative note, let me here quote Felix Franks who told me "Biochemistry is primarily the chemistry of water."

Extractions: At this stage of the planning process we need a general idea of the water chemistry of your habitat. We do not need to have a professional lab analysis until we get to the final design. If you go to your local aquarium or pond shop, you will find a number of inexpensive test kits that will suit our purposes for describing your general water chemistry. Lately we have been using a very quick and convenient test kit from Jungle Laboratories called the "Quick Dip Pond Test Kit". (a new window will open. Let the window completely load before scrolling.) These are very handy litmus paper type strips our biologists can carry in their shirt pockets as long as they remain dry. We have provided a link to Jungle Labs for your convenience. There are other kits available; we use this one because of its convenience and comprehensive results. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully when testing your water! WHAT YOU ARE TESTING FOR At this stage we would like to see the following data: pH, Total Alkalinity, Hardness, Nitrate, and Nitrite. There are other values we will want to see later, but this is a good start. Later, in a professional analysis we will look at total phosphates, orthophosphates, several species of nitrogen and other few other elements depending on the location of the pond.
