About the Survey The National Doctoral Program Survey is an observational study, not a controlled experiment. Participants were self-selected, and as a result their responses may not fully reflect the opinions of the entire graduate student population. Despite the self-selection, there is important evidence that the concerns expressed represent widely held student opinions rather than a small but outspoken set of negative voices. Our survey reached a broad cross section of the graduate student population. The demographics of the survey participants, after controlling for discipline, are similar to the demographics of graduate students and recent cohorts of Ph.D.s ( see below The vast majority of students expressed satisfaction with their programs (81%) and with their advisors (86%). Most would recommend their programs to others (80%). A pilot survey using similar methods, when compared to a survey conducted using more traditional methods, showed very similar findings. The

While providing the usual statistics on employment and unemployment, this new round of reports reveals the underlying complexity of the current science and engineering labor market. Ph.D.s are not just obtaining traditional jobs in academe, government or industry; they are finding employment in a wide variety of situations. Included in this mix is the postdoc, which is considered in some studies as employment, and in others treated as a separate category. The analyses conducted by the professional societies reflect this more fluid employment picture. American Institute of Physics One of the perennial leaders in collecting and disseminating data on physicists, the AIP has published its 1996 initial employment report on 1995 physics degree recipients. As shown in Figure 1 , AIP divides employment status into a number of useful categories, including postdocs, potentially permanent, and temporary positions. The change in employment status from the summer immediately following the receipt of the doctorate to the winter is striking the 19 percent seeking employment drops to a 4 percent unemployment rate, and the percentage with postdocs and potentially permanent positions increases. As expected, employment status for new Ph.D.s changes rapidly in the first six months following the doctorate.

Award Recipients: Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry In 1994, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation invited distinguished chemists and chemical engineers to a conference exploring the impact of chemistry on the environment. Based on the presentations and discussions at that meeting, the Foundation initiated the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry. First awards were made in 1996. The program invites experts in environmental science to submit proposals for the training of Ph.D. chemists and chemical engineers in research activities related to chemistry and the environment. Each awardee may then appoint a postdoctoral scientist to spend up to two years in a program intended to stimulate the postdoctoral scientist to carry out further research in support of environmental understanding and values. In general, five institutions are selected annually to receive a total award of $96,000 each. The program is open to all academic and other not-for-profit organizations that have well-established research efforts in environmental science or engineering.
