Extractions: Home Our Work Resources Program Staff The Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) is a multi-year research and action project to support departments' efforts to more purposefully structure their doctoral programs. We will work closely with the disciplinary communities, as well as selected departments, in six fields of study. We will foster discipline-based conceptual work and design experiments in a small number of selected departments. Carnegie will collect, examine and disseminate findings from this significant discussion and related experiments. The Carnegie Foundation believes that it is timely to return to first principles, and ask "What is the purpose of doctoral education?" Taken broadly, we believe the answer to be, to educate and prepare those to whom we can entrust the vigor, quality, and integrity of the field. We call such a person a " steward of the discipline ."

Extractions: Home Our Work Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate CID home ... Program Staff The 32 Partner Departments of the CID have committed to a serious deliberation about the purposes and desired outcomes of the doctoral program in the department. Departments will consider the strategies currently used to meet those goals. As a result of the deliberations, departments will propose changes in their program intended to better meet the agreed upon outcome goals. Taking a scholarly approach, departments further commit to gathering evidence about the impact of the changes. The Foundation's research activities will primarily focus on Partner Departments and their activities. Through annual convenings, independent data gathering, and other activities, the Carnegie Foundation will support, encourage and publicize the work done by Partner Departments. Allied departments have agreed to pursue similar goals and strategies, albeit with less support from the Foundation. Applying to be a Partnering Department

Oxtoby, dean of physical sciences at the University of Chicago, to be the ninth president in its 116-year history. Oxtoby was awarded a coterminous appointment as president and professor of chemistry by a vote of the Pomona College Board of Trustees during a special meeting Monday. He will assume his new duties on July 1, succeeding President Peter W. Stanley, who will retire at the end of a 12-year tenure. Since first joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1975, Oxtoby has been associated with the institution off and on for nearly three decades, with brief interludes to serve as a visiting professor at such places as the University of Paris; the University of Bristol in Great Britain; and the University of Sydney in Australia. Prior to assuming his current position as dean, he also served the University of Chicago for three years as director of its James Franck Institute. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry (Great Britain) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

El-Emam, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Mansoura in Egypt, for hands-on training as part of the IUPAC/UNESCO/UNIDO Safety Training Program. Ms. Esma Toprak While industries in developed countries are introducing sophisticated safety measures covering operational, health, and environmental aspects in close interaction with governments and the public, the gap between developed and developing countries in safety education, research, and implementation of technical measures is widening. The increase in chemical production and consumption in the developing world makes it essential to promote interactions to disseminate state-of- the-art knowledge on safety and environmental protection in chemical production. Realizing the importance of safety education, guidelines, legislation, and implementation, IUPAC; the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and the United Nations International Development Organization (UNIDO) have come together to develop a joint training program for safety and environmental protection in chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnological research and production. The joint IUPAC/UNESCO/UNIDO Safety Training Program allows safety experts from developing countries to learn about safety and environmental protective me asures by visiting and working in plants of IUPAC Company Associates in the industrialized world.

Extractions: 2003 Program Brochure To increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties, to enhance diversity on campuses, and to address the persisting effects of past discrimination, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral fellowships to members of six minority groups whose underrepresentation in the professoriate has been severe and long-standing. The fellowship program identifies individuals with demonstrated ability and provides them the opportunity to engage in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. These successful scholars then inspire other students of color to pursue an academic career in teaching and research. Approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to those individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior scholarship and show the greatest promise for future achievement as scholars, researchers, and teachers in institutions of higher education. Eligibility to apply in the predoctoral fellowship competition is limited to: Citizens or nationals of the United States (must have become a citizen by the application deadline date: November 20, 2002)

EDUCATION AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAMS IN CLINICAL CHEMISTRY The Commission on Accreditation is an independent non-profit organization that accredits training programs in clinical chemistry at the masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral level. The purpose of granting accreditation to training programs is to foster their excellence, to provide recognition to accredited programs, and to attract qualified individuals to training centers of excellence. This process is intended to assure the trainee that the standards of education and training are consistent with the progress in medicine and clinical laboratory sciences. To insure that these basic standards are met, each accredited program undergoes a rigorous examination of its curriculum, faculty, and institutional support, as facilitated by the preparation of a self-study document by the program director. In addition, each program is site-visited by Commissioners every five years. Graduates of accredited programs are permitted to take either the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (doctoral level) or the National Registry in Clinical Chemistry (masters level) examination prior to meeting experience requirements.
