Extractions: Updated as New Information is Received Introduction W hile there were several papers detailing the use of computers in chemistry during the 1960s and 1970s, the first companies organized to address the new areas of chemical databases and molecular modeling were Molecular Design, Ltd. (1978) and Tripos Associates, Inc. (1979) respectively. As the chart below demonstrates, the market grew and evolved continuously since this period and currently is comprised of approximately 20 companies ( A horizontal scrolling history and a vertical scrolling history also are available). There have been several individuals who have contributed to this history and who have corrected some of my mistakes. The author especially wishes to acknowledge Bruce Gelin and Phil Westmoreland for their contributions. If you have logos for any of the companies listed, especially those that were used in the company's early history, I would appreciate hearing from you! 1. Publications

In 1963 the Institute of Biochemistry was founded as an additional institute, and in 1969 Organic and Physical Chemistry moved to the new building at Heinrichstrasse. In the year 2000 five of the six chemistry institutes joined together and founded a large "institute of chemistry". The outline of history follows the three main sites, the specialized institutes which were splitted from the chemistry institute, and lists chairmen and chemists with venia legendi together with their most important research fields. Statements in science must be precise and meaningful, such that they can be tested by experiments or observations by other people, with the same results. Astronomy is the science dealing with all the celestial objects in the universe , including the planets and their satellites (e.g. our

Extractions: As part of his efforts to build the department, Dr. Howard recruited a food chemist from Kansas State University, Fred A. Kummerow , who already had an established program of research in lipid chemistry and biochemistry. Kummerow arrived on the Urbana campus in September 1950 along with 6 students from his laboratory at Kansas State University (thus instantly doubling the size of the graduate student population in the fledgling department at that time). He was initially assigned a laboratory on the second floor of the Dairy Manufactures Building (DMB). With an expanding program and considerable industry funding, the DMB soon became too crowded. Kummerow's lipid chemistry group moved to the first floor of the Animal Sciences Laboratory (Z.John Ordal's microbiology laboratory was also there). In 1958, a gift of $6000 in the form of Missouri Pipe and Gas Company stock was given to the newly organized Illinois Heart Association (IHA). IHA then provided a grant to Kummerow for his research on the relationship between lipids and heart disease. It turned out that the gift was from Ms Ethel Burnsides of Paris, Illinois, who had been providing $25,000 per year of her stock as a tax deduction to various organizations
