I went to Caen, France for three months and had the best time of my life. Also, I love the small size for several reasons. First, I love that all of my professors know my name and always have time to talk with me. And I love that I know or at least recognize about 75% of the people here on campus. Finally, the girls on the team are the best thing about K! How swimming/diving makes K the best place earth: Where do I start? I love the team, the girls, the competition, and of course, going to Florida. I would be completely lost here without the team. Extractions: O.K. I'll begin by confessing that I am a middle school teacher who participated in one of the NSF funded summer Institutes for Chemical Education. So, I already had the pleasure of working with and learning from two of the authors, Jerry and Mickey Sarquis. I would not have expected anything less than a 5-star professional resource from them. This book is a gem. It offers 42 activities, evenly distributed among K-3, 4-6, and 7-9. However, those categories meant little to my students or me. We loved them all. Of course, I might have changed an activity title like "Twirly Whirly Milk" to something that was more "8th gradish" and added a question or two to the accompanying handout, but what is important is that my students enjoyed the activities and thought about science as a result of doing them.

He had, of course, an interest in electricity; in addition, Ampère made similar investigations as did Avogadro into the nature of matter in its gaseous state. Alfven, Hannes Olof Gosta What I know of Alfven is that he was born in Sweden in 1908; and, while at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, in 1970, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics "for fundamental work and discoveries in magneto-hydrodynamics with fruitful applications in different parts of plasma physics." I first bumped into Alfven when I picked up a small paperback book of his, which I very much enjoyed, Atom, Man, and the Universe, The Long Chain of Complications (San Francisco: Freeman, 1969). It was written simply and plainly for a general audience, and enables us "to view ourselves both as a part of the atomic microcosm and as part of the universe that dwarfs us." She was born in New York City and was educated there, receiving her undergraduate degree from Barnard College in 1974 and a Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry from Columbia University in 1979. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Bell Laboratories and Yale University, she joined the faculty of Hunter College in 1980, then returned to Columbia University in 1983. She assumed her present position at Caltech in 1989. Her research has focused on designing transition-metal complexes that target and probe specific sites along DNA and RNA. Thomas Cech, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, is also an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He obtained a B.A. in chemistry from Grinnell College in 1970 and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1975. He then engaged in postdoctoral research in the Department of Biology at MIT before joining the faculty of the University of Colorado in 1978. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1982 his research group announced the discovery of self-splicing RNA. The recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work on ribozymes, he continues to study their structure and function today.

Dr. Pauling was engaged in the private practice of psychiatry for over thirty years. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1952.
