A Landlubber's Mini-Guide to Grand Cayman Explore the land side... Grand Cayman is one of the premiere Caribbean destinations for SCUBA divers, snorkelers and beach lovers, who are drawn to the island's crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. They are wonderful and worth your time, but let's face it, not everyone is a watersports enthusiast. There are tourists who want to "get into" a place, filling their visit with culture, history, natural beauty, and all the things that make their destination unique. This article is for those travelers, who might enjoy the beach but want a bit more...and for divers and snorkelers who've either had enough diving/snorkeling, too much sun, or just don't want to miss anything on their favorite island! Small but worth a visit is the Cayman Islands National Museum in George Town. This museum opened in 1990 in the Old Courts Building, has survived hurricanes and storms and has served many purposes through its existence, including town jail, courthouse, Sunday worship meeting hall and as a spot to hold local dances. Inside, you'll find exhibits on the cultural history of the early people of the Cayman Islands, and the Natural History exhibit, whose wonderful three-dimensional map of the Cayman Islands shows the island from above and below the sea. Walk through displays of natural habitats you'll find on the islands and see the laser presentation of the underwater world. Don't forget the museum shop (have a look at the local jewelry) and you can pick up a cool drink at the cafe before moving on.

The sun rises brilliantly, the breeze rustles through the fronds of silver thatch palms, and a flock of Grand Cayman parrots alight on a mango tree. A green turtle slides off to sea, skimming over the reefs, after depositing her eggs in the sand. The white and purple petals of a wild banana orchid flutter from their perch on a Mastic Trail mahogany tree, and a clutch of baby blue iguana scuttle into the underbrush, ready for anything. At second glance, such seemingly casual occurrences are actually hard-won victories. Were it not for the efforts of an army of volunteers, bolstered by two decades of far-sighted legislation and a government committed to education and preservation, the Cayman Islands might be "just another pretty face" of beaches and hotels-minus the endowments that make them one-of-a-kind in natural history and heritage. The Caymanian love of nature, coupled with inherent sensibility and economic vision, has caused the Cayman Islands to lead the way in establishing policy for eco-tourism development.

Extractions: PAHO/WHO Regional, and Subregional Centers, Institutes, and Programs The Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) is the executive arm of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); it simultaneously serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization. In 1949, the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the World Health Organization agreed that the Pan American Sanitary Bureau would serve as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas. In 1950, the Pan American Sanitary Organization was recognized as a fully autonomous and specialized inter-American organization. Thus, the Organization became a component of both the United Nations and the inter-American systems. The XV Pan American Sanitary Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1958) changed the name of the Pan American Sanitary Organization to the Pan American Health Organization. The name of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau remained unchanged. The fundamental purposes of the Pan American Health Organization are to promote and coordinate the efforts of the countries of the Region of the Americas to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of their people.
