Welcome To Hostels.com / The Internet Guide To Hostelling Japanese!) Wilno is a very interesting city with a lot of wonderful architecture. We admired old churches and other old buildings. There is a very nice castle. http://www.hostels.com/tt/baltics.html
Extractions: It was a very fine adventure. I came to Wilno(Vilnius) with my brother by train. Then I get to the hostel on Filaretai street - I got their address in Internet Hostels Guide. The hostel was without luxuries(like all hostels) but very clean and nice. The owner was very helpful and friendly. It was a lot of international tourists from many countries (among them quite a lot of Japanese!) Wilno is a very interesting city with a lot of wonderful architecture. We admired old churches and other old buildings. But as a city it is rather "dead". There are some foreign tourists but not too much. There is quite a little cafe and restaurants and most of them are rather empty. Shops are like during communist times - dirty and saleswomen ignore customers. And generally - I still feel there a "breath of comrade Stalin". Lithuania did some changes in the beginning of 90ies but then they stopped. After visiting the city we were drinking beer under the Monument of Gedyminas (Great Duke of Lithuania, grandfather of Polish King Jagiello)but Police kicked us out. In Warsaw it is normal that people drink beer near the column of King Zygmunt III, but Lithuanians have more byzantic approach to monuments.....

Extractions: Encounters with virtual reality are no longer an unusual occurrence. We have become used to fly-through systems that allow architects to explore the details of a structure by moving rapidly though a series of images on a computer screen, and with systems where users put on gloves and goggles to manipulate virtual objects that seem to be actually there. One of the dreams of those who wield power has been to rule the entire world. In the Middle Ages, kings sought to maintain and expand their kingdoms. Lords sought to expand their domains. Stewards sought to administer their provinces in peace. In feudal society, these were the basic requirement for admission into the structure of power. In one form or another, members of all of these classes held land. Even if were not the whole world, it was gratifying to do as one pleased with oneÕs own corner of the world. The reason is that land is the reality of the world. Land that was possessed in this way had some kind of form. It was a real object. When people came into possession of a piece of land without any meaning, land that was simply an object, they felt the need to infuse it with meaning. Objects could not continue to be simply objects without any meaning. A classic example of endowing land with meaning is furnished by the garden. The emperor Hadrian, one of the five wise emperors of ancient Rome, built an enormous villa on the outskirts of the capital at Tibur (modern Tivoli). The garden contained depictions of memorable places he had visited throughout his life. An example from Tokyo is the Rikugien garden in Komagome. This garden was built by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a favorite minister of the fifth Shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. It was designed as a series of allusions to 88 famous sites mentioned in classical poetry.

Extractions: European countries, exhausted by 30 years persisted war, began to take a breath for a new boom. Devastated domains began to be restored and a new spiritual atmosphere of the time getting start a new economic tendency - merkantilism together with new art style - baroque. Situation is formed also in the Czech countries. In consequence of Bílá hora fight (1620) secular lords and church reinforced their power by exiling and decimating of protestants and they got big financial means thanks to the confiscations of protestant's property. All above mentioned had an influence on giant boom of engineering works in first half of the 18th century. Architecture already stopped to be only functional residence of a nobleman and had to express his power and social status. Under leading of prominent architects Johan Bernhard Fisher from Erlach, Jacob von Hildebrandt, Octavio Broggio, Giovanni Battista Alliprandi and Maxmilian Kanka arose jewels of baroque architecture. The top of the baroque creation represent works of Krytof Dienzenhofer, Jan Blazej Santini and Kilian Ignác Dienzenhofer, which didn't have any analogy in whole European art of that time. Plumped with generous portions of spiced potato soup, spiced chicken and pike with noodles, zabaglione with further spices and, of course, that "kind of fat", I talk with the hotel restaurant manager about life in Passau, a delicious candy-coloured Bavarian town at the confluence of the Danube, Ilz and Inn. "It is", he says, "how you say, the melting bucket." Passau is certainly a curious town, delightfully so, a fine invitation to Bavaria and the perfect destination for a long, lazy weekend.

Our aim is to have a facility available to Local Authorities and National Amenity Societies on the web by September 2002. Further details SAVE has been described as the most influential conservation group to be formed since William Morris founded the Society for the Protection Ancient Monuments over a century ago. It was established in 1975 - European Architectural Heritage Year - by a group of journalists, historians, architects, and planners to campaign publicly for endangered historic buildings through press releases, lighting leaflets, reports, books and exhibitions. Since 1976 The Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) has operated as a national revolving fund providing short term working capital to historic buildings preservation trusts (BPTs) and other charities to undertake preservation projects. To be eligible, the project must be undertaken by an organisation with charitable status and involve a change in the use and/or the ownership (usually through its acquisition by the borrower) of an historic building in need of repair and rehabilitation. The Ancient Monuments Society was founded in 1924 for the study and conservation of ancient monuments, historic buildings and fine old craftsmanship. We are recognised as one of the National Amenity Societies, and as such are informed of any application for listed building consent in England and Wales involving demolition.
