Photo Album Antwerp is a medieval city on the Scheldt River. Cruise ships use Antwerpen (Flemish) as a port of call and an easy gateway to Brussels (30 miles), Ghent (30 miles), or Bruges (65 miles). Ships can dock near the city center, and the old town and market are an easy walk from the pier. Antwerp is an interesting city in itself, and well worth a day trip for cruise visitors. The photo below is of the mischievous mythical figure of Lange Wapper, who stands guard at the castle Steen. Check out the links below for some of the pictures I made while in Antwerp for the day. This energy also surfaces in the trendy bars and hip nightclubs that have now joined the more traditional charms of the beer and gin bars that still pull in the more reserved drinkers. Beyond modern Antwerp the more traditional attractions complement the new, with the impressive Grote Markt , containing the Town Hall and the Brabo Fountain Groenplaats , with its Rubens statue. The work of local artistic luminary Peter Paul Rubens surfaces all over Antwerp, most notably at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Steen , a 12th-century fortress now housing the National Maritime Museum , that overlooks the buzzing new city of today.

Extractions: In any language this is a palace! A magnificent house in large grounds it has been the home of the Princes de Ligne since the 14th century, and the castle and gardens were already famous in the 17th century. The resent castle was built by Claire Marie of Nassau, Princess of Ligne, assisted by her son Henry, built the castle in 1680.Although inspired by French architecture the plan still shows some medieval influences with the four towers reminding one of earlier fortresses. The family has been prominent in Europe for hundreds of years and has had many distinguished members throughout these centuries. There was a disastrous fire on 14th December 1900 which destroyed most of the central building but heroic efforts by members of the family and the local villagers saved most of the art collection. The story of the family is told in the superb collection of paintings, sculpture and memorabilia which are displayed throughout the house and it needs at least an hour to do justice to the collection. After visiting the house it is essential to explore the gardens. Immediately outside the house is a magnificent lake which stretches away into the distance. The grounds are so extensive that there is a small 'train' which takes visitors through them. If you choose to walk through them you pass from one garden to another through high hedges many of these gardens have small ponds within them. It almost gives one an Alice in Wonderland feeling as you explore.

The Bois is filled with paths for joggers, bikers, strollers and equestrians. A outdoors roller-skating rink is at the Patinoire. In the summer on Sunday mornings concerts are performed in the Bois. Most central is the Royal Palace with the Royal Park opposite. The Park itself extends to the Parliament building and is filled with statues and wrought-iron lamps. Each year on Independence Day on 21 July, the park becomes a giant fair in the evening with music, exhibits, rides and games topped off with fireworks around 11 p.m.

Extractions: Sponsored by: This chronicle: Other chronicles: June 28, 2002: Discovering Belgium "What is this Belgium like that awaits me?" This was the question I asked myself before coming to this quaint country last weekend. In fact, I discovered that I knew very little about Belgium until I came to visit it. First, there is no such thing as a Belgian language. The people speak two languageson the north side of the country they speak Dutch (more pure than Holland, without so much English influence), and on the south side, French. The explanation for this is that the country holds two communities of different origins, the Flemings (descendants of the people of Flanders) to the north and the Walloons (Frankish descent) to the south. Second, Belgium is recognised as being the real country of "french" fries (not France, neither Holland). Also, it is the country of beer (they say there is a different kind for each day of the year) as well as chocolate (stronger and more bitter than the Swiss kind). Belgium is a country that seems to be formed by a mixture of other countries and cultures, mainly from Holland, France, and Germany.

Extractions: Top of page About me Home Photographs ... Telford Educational Computing This story began after the VX800 Owner's Club Ken Rally in June 2000. On his return to the US, Ken offered to get shirts made for members of the Club. Orders were duly placed, payments made, and in due course Ken received the shirts. Arrangements were made for him to send those for Europe to Andre in Belgium, and before Christmas Ken posted them. The US Postal Service lost them. Some time in the New Year - February I think - they found their way back to Ken, and were sent on their way again, this time arriving safely in Stenokkerzeel, near Brussels - together with a hefty bill from the Customs. At this point a mini-Rally was arranged, many of the European members going to Andre's to get them instead of having him post them. To my disappointment I couldn't go on the date chosen, but rather than missing out completely I foisted myself on Andre and Veerle's hospitality at another time. Thus it was that the Tuesday of Easter week saw me southbound on the first long trip on my newly-acquired Diversion 600 . It was sunny and dry, with a promise of showers which was happily not kept, but not warm; and just past Kettering I left the A14 and made my way pleasantly via B-roads. I passed through Higham Ferrers, St Neots (coffee and warm-up), Saffron Walden, Great Dunmow and Chipping Ongar, then had a meal at West Thurrock services on the M25. The journey was enough to satisfy me the the Diversion would be everything I had hoped - capable of making good time on fast roads, comfortable enough for long distances and flexible and forgiving enough to be trickled quietly along back roads without having to forever change gear or correct over-sensitive steering.
