Baker, Star-Telegram Staff Writer FORT WORTH A group of court-appointed attorneys makes more than $1.6 million a year representing indigent criminal defendants in a legal system that critics say is unfair to the poor. Allan Butcher, Bill Ray and Leon Haley were among 25 lawyers who received about 39 percent of the $20.2 million the county spent on indigent criminal defendants from 1995 to 1999, including capital punishment trials. Tarrant County judges typically pay lawyers $60 to $100 an hour for court-appointed cases. Most privately retained criminal defense attorneys charge $150 to $200 an hour. The top-paid lawyers said they represent their poor clients with the same zeal as they do those who pay them tens of thousands of dollars. For most cases, lawyers are paid about $500 but on complicated, lengthy assignments they can receive as much as $30,000, according to the analysis. The attorneys said they tend to make more money per appointed case than others down the list because judges choose them for clients who have committed the most serious crimes. Defending a capital murder, murder or aggravated robbery case usually takes more time and effort.

The curriculum is designed to meet the Association of American Law Schools guidelines for prelegal education and is coupled with sound career Counseling and assistance with the law school admissions process. The program, which leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, has been offered from the first days of the university and is the only curriculum in the university specifically designed with the pre-law student in mind. Hundreds of students have completed the pre-law Curriculum and been admitted to law schools throughout the nation. These include Harvard, Georgetown, and the University of Texas as well as the Louisiana law schools at Tulane, Loyola, Southern, and LSU. Students who achieve a high grade point average in their undergraduate work and score well on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) will be especially attractive candidates for the most competitive law schools. Advisory Services Effective academic and career advising is particularly emphasized in UL-Lafayette's pre-law program. Academic burnout, financial problems, or future uncertainties are valid reasons for considering law school alternatives. For those facing such problems, there are law-related careers or options which should be investigated. A number of our students have opted for such careers. Legal Assistant programs are offered at several colleges, universities and proprietary schools. There is a wide variety in the nature of the programs. Some are summer programs offered for students between their junior and senior years. Other may be four or six months of intensive study. Still others are full academic year programs.
