Escalating demand, utility deregulation and aging infrastructure have each contributed to mounting uncertainty about the availability of utility power. These demands can be compounded in remote areas that do not always receive the same level of maintenance as more populated regions. Traditionally, remote operations have relied upon a variety of solutions to address their particular backup power needs. The most common solutions have included various configurations of battery banks and engine generators. Increased infrastructure demands coupled with shortcomings of existing solutions, have caused those responsible for infrastructure reliability to seek new alternatives for the long duration backup power that can be vital to continuous operation for remote sites.
