Extractions: Canoe-kayak In these days of electronic timing, elite sport has become a game of centimetres, even millimetres. Rarely has this been more graphically demonstrated than at the 1988 Olympic kayaking event in Seoul. Australia's Grant Davies was initially awarded the K1 1,000 metres event. Davies had signed the gold medal register and was about to take part in the medal ceremony when, after 11 minutes of deliberations, judges decided to give the race to American Greg Barton. They ruled the American had beaten Davies by just five one-thousandths of a second.

Extractions: The United States two-man kayak team of Angel Perez, left, and Peter Newton finished in sixth place. AP PENRITH, Australia (CNNSI.com) - Angel Perez and Peter Newton teamed to finish sixth in the men's two-man, 500-meter kayak event on Sunday. Perez and Newton were delayed by six hours prior to the finals due to high winds, and even though the U.S. pair did not medal, it was the best U.S. performance in the event. It's the second time in as many days that Perez and Newton were part of a American-best boat. The K-4 was sixth on Saturday (Friday night EDT), the first time the United States has reached that final. "It was a wonderful experience," said Perez, who competed for his native Cuba in 1992. "I hope to do it again at the next Olympics."

From Europe to early America, canoes were used to navigate rivers, and some were even crafted to fit up to 50 people. Canoeing found its beginnings as a recreational sport in the early 1800s, thanks in large part to Englishman John MacGregor. MacGregor spent his days canoeing the rivers and lakes of Europe, and later wrote a popular series of books describing his journeys. Many people imitated MacGregor, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage interest in the sport. Quickly, the sport caught on in Europe and North America, and in 1924 delegates from national canoeing associations met to establish an international body and formulate rules for competitive racing around the globe. That same year, canoe/kayak made its first Olympic appearance in Paris with an exhibition regatta.

Extractions: Canoeing began as a recreational sport in the 19th century with an English barrister, John MacGregor. MacGregor designed his own Eskimo-style kayak in 1845, and spent much of the next quarter-century taking the boat on extended trips across the rivers and lakes of Europe. During this time, he wrote a popular series of books and delivered lectures describing his canoeing experiences. MacGregor's adventures spawned many imitators, and in 1866 he founded the Royal Canoe Club to encourage further interest in the new sport. The club held its first regatta the following year and by 1868 boasted 300 enthusiasts and a fully realized set of rules to govern competitive canoe racing. The sport's popularity spread through Europe and North America, and the New York Canoe Club was founded in 1871.
