Extractions: Our video project uses the CRB Heritage Minutes as a model and it encourages the students to make history come alive in a meaningful and dramatic fashion. During our three video project experiences we have found that it allows the students to become personally involved in an episode from Canadian history and that it is a very exciting and effective way for children to learn about their country's heritage. Students acquire many skills during the research, rehearsal and videotaping phases of the project. They have the opportunity to work independently and to make their own choices but also to work cooperatively in small groups of three. To introduce the project, both teachers present a three week overview, including a variety of portfolio activities and unfolding timeline, of the eleven eras of Canadian history that are indicated by our Saskatchewan Social Studies curriculum:

Extractions: The purpose of these pages is to inform the general population about the Canadian Government's internment of Ukrainian Canadians in Concentration Camps in Canada during the period of 1914-1920. With the outbreak of World War I, the War Measures Act (1914) was implemented as a result of an Order In Council by the Canadian Government. This resulted in the internment of 8,579 " enemy aliens " of which over 5,000 were Ukrainians who had emigrated to Canada from territories under the control of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It also meant an additional 80,000 individuals (of which the vast majority were Ukrainians) were obliged to register as " enemy aliens " and then required to report to local authorities on a regular basis. These internees were used to develop Canadian infrastructure as " forced-labourers To this date it has not been determined what was the driving force for the Internment. Was it due to wartime xenophobia and war fever, or the Economic benefits of a forced-labour system, or bigoted-driven emotions against Canada's first non-Official language speaking immigrants? The truth is that it was probably due to mixture of these reasons. Unfortunately, the War Measures Act formed the basis for future government incursions on the Civil liberties of Citizens and immigrants to Canada. This act was used as the basis of the internment of the Japanese Canadians in 1941 and the French-Canadians (or Quebecois) in 1970. This act was always implemented via an Order in Council, rather than through approval via the democratically elected parliament. This Act was first implemented during World War I where Ukrainian Canadians were primarly and unjustly made it's first victims.

Extractions: The Power of the Parks Board The Board of Park Management of Hamilton was the official title from the mayor and six appointed officials who ran Hamilton parks from 1900 to 1974. This group was most often referred to as Parks, or the Parks Board because of its long title. In 1961, City Council passed a requirement that three members of the Board must be aldermen to allow Council greater say in parks development. The Board operated on an annual budget of all profits collected from park rentals and one mill from the City budget. The amount of the mill changed every year, because it was calculated from the assessment or evaluation that defined what all the properties in Hamilton were worth each year. To get one non-residential mill, 85 % of the residential assessment value was added to all of the non-residential assessment value, and then divided by 1,000. A residential mill was 85 % of a non-residential mill. The Board was considered a separate company, that was lead by the Public Parks Act of Ontario. The Act governing restricted the Board to owning under 404.74 hectares (1,000 acres) and later 809.47 hectares (2,000 acres) of land, or earning more profit from park rentals than one mill. Some former members of the Parks Board, who are most famous for their contributions to Hamilton parks, and who also have parks named after them, are William Schwenger, Samuel Manson, Thomas Baker McQuesten and William McCulloch.

The Committee defines working-class and labour history in the broadest terms and encourages study of working-class communities, culture, ethnicity, family life, gender, sexuality, migration, ideology, politics and organization. It recognizes the value of a diversity of disciplinary and theoretical approaches to the study of history and encourages open and active discussion and debate. As well, it aims to encourage the inclusion of working-class history in school curricula, through institutions of public history, and within the educational programs of labour and community organizations. The purpose of the organization shall be the promotion of labour and working-class history. Activities of the CCLH shall be carried on, according to Revenue Canada Guidelines, without purpose of gain for its members, and any profits or other accretions to the Committee shall be used solely to promote its objectives.
