Feel free to comment on or add to it.) For many years the Thai / Cambodian border served as a separate or second Cambodia. The perspectives from the border were different from those inside Cambodia. There was even a tension and friction between aid agencies working on opposite sides of the border. People working on the border were accused of helping the KR and supporting military action, those working in Cambodia were accused of supporting and prolonging an untenable and dictatorial regime installed by the Vietnamese. Extractions: Cambodia gained its independence from French occupation in 1953. The Cambodian king Sihanouk held all the power until 1970, when he was removed from power by a right-wing revolution. Sihanouk had tried to remain neutral during the Vietnam war, but the right wing powers thought that he had too pro-communist views. The right wing government lead by Lon Nol gave The United States of America free access to Cambodia. In the end Cambodia supported The United States and Southern Vietnam in the Vietnam War. A civil war erupted in Cambodia between the army and the communist guerillas. Pol Pot's genocide The communist guerillas lead by Pol Pot captured the capital city Phnom Pen and all of Cambodia in 1975. The communist government abolished money, shattered families, stopped schooling and drove the people out of the cities into the country side to grow rice. The supporters of the previous government were executed as well as the educated of society. Many of the people of Cambodia died of hunger, sickness, and forced labor. One to two million Cambodians died during the communist government of Pol Pot. In 1979 Vietnam conquered Cambodia and put its own puppet government into Phnom Pen. This government did not receive UN or western support, consequently the Cambodian situation became severe. It was made more difficult by a civil war between the puppet government, the communists, anti-Vietnamese groups, and others in exile in Thailand.

After working in the country and assessing the situation for two years Keat and Sally purchased a half-acre of land as the site for the church and their home. By September 1996, using their own assets, they funded and Playground at New Life in Christ Church built the church, and a two-story house on the property. The family quarters are upstairs and the downstairs four bedrooms and kitchen are quarters for visitors and missionaries. The complex has been used to assist other Christian churches in the area. Currently The Impact Team from Kona hopes to establish a Christian preschool on the property to help build the church through the next generation.

Extractions: 60 Second Survey The National Library of Australia maintains a small collection of Khmer language materials consisting of publications from Cambodia, and Australian publications in the Khmer language. In addition, the National Library has a larger collection of English and other European language works relating to Cambodia and the Cambodian people. Microfilm and microfiche collections, some of them dealing with Cambodia's recent history add to the depth of the Library's resources on Cambodia and Indochina. During the period 1954-1975 the National Library received selected publications from Cambodia. Supply ceased in 1975, and was only slowly resumed as the country struggled to rebuild after the devastation of the Pol Pot era. Acquisition of material is still difficult. The collection grows through new titles purchased from Cambodia, and material donated to the National Library of Australia by individuals and organisations. Since 1990 materials have been received through the Cambodian Acquisition Program established with the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh. Khmer language publications from Australia come to the Library through legal deposit. Occasional acquisition visits have been made by National Library staff.

Extractions: The Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979, in which approximately 1.7 million people lost their lives (21% of the country's population), was one of the worst human tragedies of the last century. As in Nazi Germany, and more recently in East Timor, Guatemala, Yugoslavia, and Rwanda, the Khmer Rouge regime headed by Pol Pot combined extremist ideology with ethnic animosity and a diabolical disregard for human life to produce repression, misery, and murder on a massive scale. In December 1994, the Cambodian Genocide Program (CGP) at Yale University won an initial grant of $499,000 from the Office of Cambodian Genocide Investigations, Bureau of East Asia and the Pacific, U.S. Department of State. In 1995-96 the Australian and Netherlands governments and the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc. provided complementary funding. In 1997, the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor awarded the CGP another grant of $1 million, and in 1999, a further $150,000. In January 1995, the CGP established the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) in Phnom Penh, and immediately began the work of documenting the mass killings in Cambodia during the Democratic Kampuchea (DK) regime headed by Pol Pot between 1975 and 1979. Extractions: Cambodia: Year Zero One of the most notable genocides since 1945 was visited on its own people by the Khmer Rouge , the guerrilla movement which successfully came to power using the destablization of Cambodia, following the US extension of the Vietnam war into that country. In April 1975, the Khmer Rouge took the capital city of Phnom Penh. At this point the began an exercise in social control on a scale rarely seen. Under the direction of the Angkar (the "Higher Committee"), led by Pol Pot (who was arrested for this only in 1997), the government moved people out of the cities into the countryside for a massive reeducation program. At the same time there began the systematic killing of those Cambodians associated with earlier governments. More, any Cambodian man, woman or child who was seen as a threat ,or who refused to obey orders was killed. The ability to speak a western language was sufficient grounds. Between 1975 and 1979 over half a million Cambodians, out of a population of seven million, fell in the Khmer Rouge "killing fields".

"I was elected by the people of Cambodia in elections that were supervised and organized by the United Nations," Ranariddh said at a news conference Thursday afternoon. "Sedach Hun Sen (Cambodia's second prime minister) says I was 'dismissed,' but not through legal procedures, but through the use of tanks and guns," Ranariddh said. "It is a coup d'etat." Ranariddh was ousted by Hun Sen after two days of fighting in Phnom Penh. Ranariddh said the U.N. "and all peace-loving nations must not recognize a regime coming from such a coup." He also asked that the U.N. use economic sanctions to pressure Hun Sen into ending the coup and holding elections. "The Security Council must do something," he said.
