This poet would serve at the appointment of the Governor for a period of two years beginning July 2002. As with all Arts Council programs, applications are reviewed by panels composed of highly respected artists, performers, and knowledgeable members of the arts community. The Poet Laureate Review Panel will make a recommendation of three finalists who then will be sent to the Governor for his consideration and selection. This panel is composed of Luke Breit, Michael Datcher, Jack Hicks, Dixie Salazar, and Patricia Wakida. Their biographies are listed below. Literary Program Coordinator for World Stage; Mr. Datcher is a fiction writer published in such periodicals as the Washington Post and Vibe. He is a contributing editor to San Francisco Focus Magazine and Pacific News Service and is active in the arts community. Mr. Datcher also serves on the board of directors of Beyond Baroque. He recently served as a resident writer in the Writers on Site Program of Poets and Writers. Mr. Datcher holds a BS in Psychology UC Berkeley and an MA in African American Studies.

While the state's water system is a triumph of engineering talent and economic wealth, its successes are offset by troubling social and ecological conflicts. Large-scale agribusinesses urge construction of more reservoirs and canals, as well as creation of elaborate water markets that could potentially allocate water flexibly, but at great cost to the economies of rural California communities.

The era of flower power was over; the summer of love had given way to a winter of discontent. An unpopular war raged in Vietnam, the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were fresh in the minds of many, and urban areas throughout the nation simmered with the racial tensions that had erupted in places like Detroit and a Los Angeles suburb called Watts. The importance of cultural awareness, an outgrowth of the civil rights movement, was a rising tide on college campuses throughout the United States. In 1970, a group of dedicated activists at what was then San Diego State College struggled against long odds - and at times even against each other - to create the first academic department in California dedicated to the study the culture of Mexicans in America.

This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites.
