5-0 out of 5 stars Difference Maker
This book is a difference maker and is the one book that I would recommend to any professional, young or old. Everyone will face ethical dilemmas in his or her professional career. High-Performance Ethics is a roadmap through those difficult times, as well as a reassurance to leaders that it does pay to do the right thing - always. This book made such a difference in my life that, as Predident-elect of the South Carolina Public Relations Society of America, an organization that lives by a strict code of ethics, I immediately invited Mr. Cantrell to come speak to our members. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended to those who look for success and leadership
On a day of June 2007, I flipped through as many business management books as possible -- on 8 fully loaded 6-foot Barnes & Noble bookshelves - because I was desperately in need of professional books to help me with my job.60 minutes passed by, I couldn't find a book that I felt worth my money and my time commitment to study at home.I murmured to myself, "God, tell me which book I should buy.... my eyes are getting blurred and my legs are tired." a newly published High Performance Ethics suddenly stood out right in front of me.I slothfully opened to the middle of the book because I was too tired to start from the beginning. I was immediately engaged with Cantrell's perspectives on how to deal with various types of leaders, wise and especially unwise, when we have to submit to their authorities due to the hierarchy.I paid for the book at the cashier literally seconds after I first saw it on the shelves.

The layout of the book presents an interesting juxtaposition of coherent and convincing theories with Cantrell's real life experiences during his time as a CEO of an international business organization.Cantrell and Lucas are not only great writers but fantastic teachers.I enjoy so much gaining solid knowledge through reader-friendly writing style.I am well related to Cantrell's insisting on the importance of having both competence and characters as a High Performance Ethics (HPE) Leader.I couldn't agree with him enough because I have witnessed at many workplaces the negative impacts by people having either competence or characters but not both.

Through reading, by surprise, I realized that Cantrell is actually a Christian and a son of a local minister.I myself am a 3rd-generation Christian and a lay music minister for many years. However, the older I am, the more dissatisfied I become towards the church culture. In my observation, many Christians have been drawing an extremely bright-color line between Faith and Profession. On one side of the spectrum, many Christians are with little or no professional trainings (or intentionally avoiding high-level professional trainings). They quoted that it is harder for rich people to enter the Kingdom of God than a camel going through the eye of a needle. On the other side, many houses of worship are polluted by skilled Christians with undesirable characters.

Cantrell's life experience shows me that long term success is birthed by in-depth understanding of true prosperity and it is attainable and can be expected. He said "Prosperity, for those who haven't been given everything from the beginning, is a by-product of passion, commitment, and good thinking - and a willingness to limit desires."The leader who basically focuses on himself or herself is going to mislead, "warns Peter Drucker.(p.208)" I personally was very encouraged by the book and therefore strongly recommend it to any potential readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doing well AND doing right
There's a lot of books out there talking about ethics, and most of it is surrealistic. You couldn't apply it in real organizations - you couldn't even apply it in the ivory towers where they're writing this stuff. There's also a lot out there on performance. Some of it even gives a nod to "being ethical."But this book is totally different. It's a book about ethics that will actually help you perform at higher levels. It has insights for individuals and for leaders of organizations.I really like the approach the authors take in going back and forth, one laying out the concepts and the other illustrating it with stories from his career. An enjoyable and profitable read. ... Product Description
In the current climate of scandals from accounting firms, major business companies, and executives, this is a very timely book. School business officials (SBOs), the chief fiscal officers for school districts, have responsibility for large amounts of public funds. In their positions, they face many ethical dilemmas involving financial, personnel, and professional issues in school districts. However, the business side of schools is a relatively unknown area for most educators and is less open to outside scrutiny. It is also an area where there may be many temptations. Consequently, the importance of ethical leadership has never been greater. This book highlights the importance of ethical behavior in SBOs' professional lives and provides assistance in incorporating ethical considerations into decision making in education. To address the complexity and range of issues that confront SBOs, the book sets out multiple ethical frameworks to deal with different and often competing perspectives of what should be done. They include models based on what is just, caring, and inclusive of all voices, as well as community expectations, and standards set forth by professional associations.Features: _ ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Over-emphasis on "stakeholders"
The author puts far too much emphasis on the idea that businesses owe a responsibility to the public, or non-owner "stakeholders." While a good public relations position is a good idea, it doesn't carry with it the true duty and responsibility businesses have, ultimately, to their shareholders and other legitimately concerned parties. The author contends that businesses exist to serve the public, which is not only incredulous, but inaccurate. No business exists to serve the public, but to serve itself and its owners.Governments exist to serve the public, and they do so with far less efficiency; a situation made unavoidable due to the infinite number of conflicting wants and desires of the public.

The author places a misguided ideology over history and fact-based reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Managers and Supplemental Class Readings
Professor Archie Carroll's latest book is perfect for business managers wanting to obtain an easy to digest overview of ethical issues in business, and as a supplementary book for a business ethics and society course at both the MBA and undergraduate level.

Professor Carroll of the University of Georgia has been a leading teacher and writer in the area of business ethics for more than twenty-five years. The book has ten chapters, and each chapter contains approximately ten 700 word essays published in his Athens Banner Herald business ethics column between 1999 and 2008.

Many of the columns present both sides of a contentious issue and the reader must come to terms with where he or she stands on the issue. Other essays are filled with useful practical advice for managers struggling with how to apply and reinforce ethics in his or her organization. Each essay is followed by three or four intriguing questions for the reader to consider.

The wide range of topics addressed includes ethical leadership, corporate governance and citizenship, spirituality, and employee and consumer issues. Specific scandals are discussed and survey research findings explained. These issues are timeless.

Professor Carroll's strong moral feelings are evident and his analysis is very even-handed. Read a few essays at a time, digest the information, and see how you can improve the ethics of your own organization.

Product Description
Revised in the midst of the worst global financial crisis since the Great Depression, the new edition of Honest Work: A Business Ethics Reader reflects and reinforces the editors' assertion that business ethics is primarily about the ethics of individuals. It provides a unique focus on the personal dimension of ethics by challenging students to consider the relationship between the ways in which people do business and the kind of lives they want to live.

Now in its second edition, Honest Work provides a practical overview of business ethics that concentrates on the ethical problems and dilemmas students are most likely to face in their prospective work environments. Featuring 103 articles and 80 cases, the book covers a wide spectrum of issues, ranging from such classic topics as honesty and trust in the workplace, whistle-blowing, product liability, finance ethics, and conflicts of interest to more cutting-edge areas like environmental ethics and ethics and technology. Excerpts from plays, short stories, and novels--including Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman and George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant"--enliven the text. Each reading and chapter is followed by engaging questions for study and discussion. Offering a welcome alternative to the impersonal tone of most business ethics texts, the editors address students in an appealing and conversational manner.

Integrating new material on technology, hedge funds and derivatives, and the future of the free market, the second edition features sixteen new readings--by such eminent philosophers as Harry G. Frankfurt, Robert Nozick, and Judith Jarvis Thomson--and five provocative new cases, including "Martha Stewart Focuses on Her Salad" and "Dancing with the Dragon: Google Goes to China."

Ideal for introductory undergraduate and MBA courses in business ethics, the text is supplemented by an updated Companion Website (www.oup.com/us/ciulla) containing chapter objectives and summaries, essay questions, and suggested readings and web links. An Instructor's Manual with Test Bank is available to adopters. ... Read more

Product Description
Wouldn't it be nice if all executives had a magical rabbit-like the one in the movie Harvey -- following them around reminding them to be ethical? In this charming fable, Aristotle (Ari, for short) is a pooka -- a mythical, invisible creature with a penchant for advising against dishonesty. Our hero, Edgar P. Benchley, has been able to see and hear Ari since childhood, and as he journeys through his professional life, constantly faced with challenging questions of good conduct, Ari helps remind him that nice guys can succeed . . . even in the world of business.

Much needed in these times when confidence in corporations has eroded, A Business Tale offers readers the inspiration to make ethical choices even when it isn't easy or immediately rewarding. Following the story, the book also contains real-life examples and a 10-step action plan for ethical behavior in the workplace. A Business Tale is an easy-to-read, unforgettable "spoonful of sugar"to help companies and individuals digest the sometimes tart lessons of practical morality in the workplace. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading
I would recommend this book for everyone--from teenagers to adults. It teaches us right from wrong, and the consequences we face if we make the wrong decisions. It teaches us that it really does "pay off" in the end if you DO make the right decisions.
I encourage anyone who is in business for themselves, or working for Fortune 500 companies to read this book. There are many great lessons to be learned!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Guys Don't Have To Finish Last
The basic tenet of this book is that the author believes businesses can't truly build shareholder value without instutionalizing sound ethical practices. The author illustrates her position by creating four fictional characters who must all face various ethical and moral challenges throughout their lives as well as face the consequences of the choices they've made.

One character in particular; Edgar, has a competitive advantage over the others in the form of a very tall, and very pushy, invisible rabbit that fulfills the role of moral and ethical conscience for our hero throughout his life. I found the approach creative and entertaining.

Marianne Jennings punctuates her fictionalized lessons in ethics with many real-world examples from recent and distant history that perfectly capture the widespread pain and suffering that almost always result from unethical behavior. Companies such as WorldCom, FINOVA, Beechnut, General Motors, and John-Manville have paid millions of dollars in fines, and some of their top executives have served prison terms because of their inability to "do the right thing." In addition to the damage done to the economic base of the enterprise, there is the further toll taken on the employees, shareholders, and pubic at large.

The cornerstones of the book rest on the following ten "pointers for playing by the rules":

1) Honesty is a tough thing.
2) Playing by the rules means living with an occasional setback.
3) Doing the right thing often means more work.
4) Being ethical sometimes means running behind in the race.
5) Expect a little mockery for playing ethically.
6) Being ethical means you have to speak up.
7) Sometimes the ethical route is opportunity knocking.
8) The ethical finish first eventually, and with peace of mind.
9) Ethical indiscretions haunt the sprinters.
10) Success comes from doing what's honest and right.

The silver lining in the ethical behavior debate is that in the long run, companies who routinely engage in sound ethical practices usually win. No better example of a highly successful business executive that is renowned for his personal ethics can be made more forcefully than by the authors repeated references to none other than Warren Buffett.

At the corporate level, the highly ethical and brilliant handling of the potentially devastating public relations disaster faced by the makers of Tylenol pain products is a textbook example of how sound ethical behavior by a business can turn a losing situation into a major win.

But before the reader is ever treated to this delightful story with its carefully interwoven life lessons, Dr. Laura Schlessinger kicks off the book with an insightful and thought provoking Forward in a style that is uniquely hers to deliver a major coupe de tat for Ms. Jennings.

I have to agree with another reviewer that if you own a company, you should buy a copy of the book for every employee. Your future success may depend on the lessons it contains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Sometimes we forget that in order to succeed we need to pay attention to little things such as ethics. This book really is an eye opener... I agree, it should be mandatory for every student in America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethics are brought to real life in this fable
This is the story of ethics, choices, and business presented the tale of one Edgar Benchley, a nerd who studies well and enters the world of business, where his questionable dealings keep resulting in his being fired. Ethics are brought to real life in this fable, which uses the story format to impart basics of ethics in the business world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, excellent
I absolutely love the new book on ethics by Marianne M. Jennings. She uses a parody to follow four students through their life from high school to middle age. One student, Edgar, has a big rabbit as his conscience. The rabbit appears whenever Edgar faces an ethical dilemma. Edgar repeatedly struggles through life as he sees his three friends achieve major financial gains by being unethical.Ms. Jennings does a wonderful job of illustrating the long-term benefits of running one's personal and business decisions through an ethical filter prior to action. This book should be mandatory reading for all college students. ... Read more

This book is a timely and useful supplement to such basic courses as Professional Responsibility, business enterprises, and even commercial law. It may also be assigned in such classes as securities regulation, business/corporate ethics, and inside counsel. Indeed, a course in ethics for the business attorney may adopt this book as its primary source. The book uses the problem method to provide a concrete mode of analysis. This method works nicely to bring reality to the scene and energize the students. Rather than discussing abstract issues in a vacuum, the problem method in this setting enables students to apply the book's materials to real situations. The book contains material devoted, for example, to the following subjects: 1) the role of the business lawyer; 2) identifying counsel's client; 3) client-fraud dilemmas; 4) conflicts of interest; 5) role of in-house counsel; 6) related party transactions; 7) internal investigations; and 8) basics of business practice. ... Product Description

What special ethical problems arise for managers and employees of companies when they do business in countries and cultures other than their own? The essays in this book address the multifaceted aspects of this question and offer a range of thoughtful responses.

  • Ellen Frankel Paul examines two sexual harassment suits filed in America against Mitsubishi and turns the company's public relations debacle into an excellent case study of how a corporation should not act when doing business in a foreign land.
  • Elaine Sternberg goes beyond cultural relativism to show how the diversity and complexity of circumstances and values in different parts of the world are in fact perfectly compatible with universally valid principles of business ethics.
  • Amartya Sen explodes the myth that the tradition of authoritarian governance and the suppression of political and civil rights in Asian culture is actually beneficial to economic development.
  • Robert W. McGee reveals the fatal flaws in utilitarian approaches to trade policy and argues that all trade is essentially individual contract—and that an ethical trade policy cannot violate the property or contract rights of those individuals.

Throughout the book the contributors consistently underscore a fundamental principle that ethical companies in all cultures must never lose sight of—to abstain from contributing in any way to the violation of basic individual rights.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book for ethics class...
"Business Ethics in the Global Market" was required reading material for one of my MBA courses. This book was a great book which helped demonstrate some of the problems regarding ethical situations.I do not know what the reader above me had been ranting about.I thought that this book interpreted business ethics in such a way that even a simpleton could understand.

I recommend this book if you have to write a case study on an ethical dilemma for your class. The Mitsubishi case was extremely beneficial for that purpose.

1-0 out of 5 stars Business Ethics in the Global Market
This book aboslutely has nothing to do with business ethics and the editor, Tibor A. Machan, must not have read the papers included in this publication. His summary on the back cover are false and completely misleading.I would not recommend this book to anyone. I cannot fathom why my instructor made this a required reading for a business ethics class.

This is poorly written, difficult to follow, and cannot be linked to business ethics. ... Read more

Product Description
“An effective integration of ethics, morality and business practices…including extensive discussions of social justice, animal rights and the environment…the author elucidates the many layers of the managerial and corporate environment, deftly analyzing the fiduciary, social and moral relationships between the players in a corporation. A fresh, convincing ethical examination.”
Kirkus Discoveries

Being good is not good enough to be moral. In Do No Evil, Michael Berumen debunks the notions that moral judgments are subjective preferences and that there are no universal standards of morality. He analyzes leading normative theories and gives biographical highlights on several important philosophers. Berumen then sets forth his own theory: the only basis for universal morality is the avoidance of death and suffering, in contrast to conventional conceptions of promoting good, which he shows cannot form a basis for universal rules of conduct.

Berumen then examines the concepts of property, exchange, competition, and inequality, and shows why capitalism occupies the default position of morality, and why socialism is problematic. With that said, he also explains why property rights are not unlimited, and how morality serves to constrain capitalist acts.

The last part of the book deals with business-related topics. Berumen demonstrates that a business is property and not primarily an instrument for delivering social justice, and he covers such areas as governance, fiduciary responsibility, marketing, globalism, the environment, duties to animals, and moral courage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book on Evil
Well written: clear, non-pedantic, and interesting. The idea is that we have certain rational prohibitions to avoid unnecessary harm to ourselves and that this forms the basis of morality.Berumen says there is no rational requirement to be moral towards others; this comes from joining impartiality with our own rational prohibitions, which requires we extend it to everyone else who can suffer or die, with some proportinate formula for other animals. He comes up with a short list of general maxims...don't kill, cause pain, disable, lie, steal, or violate specified duties/obligations.These are not absolute, however, for we can always come up with a case where an exception would be the right thing to do.We can justify such exceptions by applying a Kantian universal, making it apply all of the time to all such situations.Unlike Kant, Berumen will take specific facts and consequencs into account. He then shows how capitalism, or more specifically, private property and free exchange, are allowed by morality, and why collectivism is morally problematic.Less interesting stuff on business (to me) follows, though I am sure it would be valuable to people interested in the practical business side. The exception (to me) are the chapters on business duties towards animals and the environment. One of the better books on ethics, and the first I have read that really takes a hard look at the concepts underlying socialism and capitalism from an ethical standpoint

5-0 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Synthesis
One of the few modern philsophy books with practical value...how to live one's life...and theoretical rigour from a philosophical perspective. This is a masterful synthesis of analytical philsophy, normative ethics, economics and business.I highly recommend this to serious students of any of these disciplines.Berumen begins by showing how ethical propositions have meaning and how logic applies to them; he then shows that the folly of moral relativism; and then he comes up with a set of moral principles based on our rational prohibitions and the concept of impartiality, which he contends represent the only universal moral rules possible.Berumen defines evil as the suffering of those who can suffer, whether human or other animals, and he says the basis of universal morality is to avoid causing others to suffer, that which all rational creatures would avoid for themselves without an overriding reason.Berumen then goes on to show how capitalism is more justifiable than socialism from an ethical perspective, primarily on the basis of rules against taking another's property or restricting his freedom to trade or produce. However, Berumen argues that these are not absolute rights...and that one can violate a moral precept when the facts and logic enable one to prescribe a universal exception to the circumstance, such that all rational people would prescribe the same thing given the same facts. Finally, he takes up various business issues such as corporate governance, the environment, selling, and fiduciary responsibility. His comments on the treatment of animals and our duties towards them are among the best I have encountered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Philsophy Made Understandable
Do No Evil is written clearly and logically.A lot of philsophy is either too ethereal or too technical.Berumen starts by laying out the nature of ethics, then proceeds to show what we can and cannot justify as universal princples, and applies these ideas to economics and business.Along the way he shows that capitalism is by default the most moral system, but not something whose princples are invioble, for certain macro moral rules have precedence.Longish, but very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do No Harm
Like the physician's oath, the author says the most important moral principle is to do no harm, at least, not without being able to will that what we undertake becomes a universal law covering all the same circumstances. This is an excellent book, especially when it comes to making complicated ideas easy-or easier-to understand.I really liked the section on fiduciary responsibility. The writing is clear and the subject is timely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Works
One of the most important points the author makes is that the evil done by an individual or business (the death and suffering it causes) is generally more important than the good works that it performs, that is, unless we can make a specific exception to the rule against causing harm a universal prescription. Thus, a polluter despoiling the environment is not relieved of his moral responsibilities because he donates to other environmental causes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It is the best book about Islamic Business Ethics I found.
I am very happy to find this book. I recommend it to all ones interested about Islamic Business Ethics. It is complete, easy to read (including for a French speaking person :o) ). In front of an ethic problem it is always good to refer to that... I think this is not a book for Muslims, only. Every one could find great interest reading it. In Europe, every day we see unethical situations and the catastrophes it generates.

Product Description
"Can Ethics Be Taught?" traces the evolution, strategy, and implementation of the pathbreaking Leadership, Ethics, and Corporate Responsibility Programme at the Harvard Business School. It describes in detail the origins of the initiative for this programme, the research that went into the approach, timing, and appropriate interventions for working with students and faculty, as well as the design of the programme strategy itself. The accomplishments of this programme have been substantial: a required course has been introduced into the curriculum; four new electives have been added; course heads have begun to integrate issues of ethics and corporate responsibility into the first year curriculum; and a large percentage of students have enriched the life of the community, and their own lives, through public service. ... Product Description
The new emphasis on spirituality in the workplace has been widely discussed in recent years and reported in major publications such as the Wall Street Journal and Fortune. Spirituality seems to be a basic human good essential for human flourishing. The contributors to this volume are all proponents of spirituality in the workplace, yet all raise important questions about this movement and what it means. What are the moral questions that should guide leaders? Is spirituality being treated as simply an instrumental good, valued for its usefulness in enhancing productivity and well-being? What are the responsibilities of business leaders? Of business schools and their faculty? Of churches? The essayists in this collection reflect on these and other pertinent questions.

The common thread linking these authors is that all have distinguished themselves in their respective fields or professions and all wish to advance spirituality in business. Contributors to Business, Religion, and Spirituality provide a sober, but positive, prognosis for this new growth in spirituality while offering direction for the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Survey of Views on Ethical Business Practices
If you want to get a better handle on the philosophy of ethical business practices, I recommend this book. It is a collection of essays on business and ethics using Christianity as its framework. Modern secular arguments that religion does not belong in the workplace are quickly negated by the introductory example of Benedictine Monks who, it is stated, were the first to establish structured business practices and created wealth. The essays go on to point out that modern capitalism owes much to the ethics of Christianity for creating an environment that allows business practices to flourish and wealth to be created. In todays politically correct worklife I find it confusing to know how to resolve faith at work. In reading this book I learned that I do not need to leave my faith at home to engage in business, and in fact I can be better at both when I understand the supporting role each plays.
