Good service. The book arrived before expected and in the condition as advertised.I would do business with this store again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Met the Requirement
The book was needed for a class that I was taking and it met the requirement of the text for the class.I found it to be a current review of the concepts that are explored under Business Ethics and the cases where up to date to current situations taking place in the business world.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but indirect and prolix.
The cases are very interesting and informative. The wording and writing style can be very confusing, although Velasquez does provide examples that provide more clarity. The questions for both the chapter review and case studies require critical thinking, but are too elaborate, and most aren't thought-provoking or serve any particular purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best out there
I have taught business ethics for over ten years. This is the book I use. It is the best introductory business ethics text I know of. I tried Trevino & Nelson's text last year, but found that it didn't present enough in the way of theory to help students actually make ethical decisions. I've come back to using Velasquez's book. I agree with the reviewer that complained about Velasquez's writing style. I wish he had read The Elements of Style and taken it to heart. But this is a minor quibble, given the superior quality of the content.

Product Description
Bestselling author and expert on leadership John C. Maxwell shares the only rule that matters-in business and in life. How does a person judge what is ethical?Sometimes it's clear. In the past year or two, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well documented. But is it always easy to see where the line is in life? What's the standard? And can it work in all situations? John C. Max- well thinks it can. In THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS BUSINESS ETHICS, Maxwell shows how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard-regardless of religion, culture, or circumstances. Along the way, he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track, and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Title By John Maxwell
Some readers may find "There Is No Such Thing As Business Ethics" a bit simplistic.Personally, I find that I need to be occasionally reminded that the bottom line profit margin is not necessarily the bottom line if you have to steal, cheat, lie, and abuse people along the way.Indeed, many revelations have come out the past several years of business leaders, politicians, athletes, and other people who have compromised integrity on the altar of success.

Among the important points covered by Maxwell include:

1.3 reasons we make unethical choices.
2.Shortcuts seldom pay off in the long run.
3.6 ways people want to be treated.
4.5 factors in compromising ethics.
5.5 ways to invest in people.
6.Comparison of people who "go for the gold" and people who "go for the Golden Rule".
7.4 ways to apply the Golden Rule.

Again, some readers may find Maxwell's book naive and simplistic and out of touch with reality.

If so, consider this:

1.Eventually, the unethical will be caught.
2.We are all accountable to God (I can see now that some folks really have a problem with that statement!).

Read, enjoy, and practice the Golden Rule.

Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rules to live by
This books was recommended by my Business Ethics professor and it was awesome. The author is so right. There isn't Business Ethics, but just Ethics that we should all live by but quite honestly don't.If more people lived ethically the world wouldn't be in the mess it is in right now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service
I received the goods so fast that I left it in the box for a week thinking that it was something else I rdered (a gift) that I was not in a hurry to open, only to be told by my son that it was "books for Amazon". Honestly great service!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Amazing Book!
This is one amazing book! A very quick read that is fun and exciting, hard to put down. If you've ever questioned someones ethics or my have questions about your own, this book helps you delve into 'The Golden Rule'. It asks the question 'What are ethics and how are they used to govern our actions in every day life?' I learned a lot thru this book and it helped me to re-direct my own life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money and go practice the Golden Rule
This more I think about this book, the more thought provoking it becomes.First, I find it amazing that anyone could take a belief that's widely known (practically a cliche), add nothing of substance to it, and actually write a book about it.Second, I find it even more amazing that it took 134 pages to make the Golden Rule applicable to business.Third, and perhaps the most amazing of all, is the fact that I actually spent my own hard earned money on this book. What amazing insights did I think would be uncovered?

I'll save you $9.72 (+s/h) and the 45 minutes it'll take you to read this. Here goes... Unless you were raised by wolves, it's pretty likely you've heard of the Golden Rule.Ok, now think about how this rule can be applied to all of your business dealings. That's it - you got it!

Whew! Now that you have an extra $9.72 in your pocket and 45 minutes of free time, go practice that Golden Rule by treating your kids/grandkids/neighbors to some ice cream. ... Read more

This books is cool beans for real.ITs all like this is ethics and this is what you should be doing. And i was like ok, that sounds good i'll do things like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text and fast read
This book is an easy read and has very good case study and example of multinationals dealing with ethics issues. I suppose one challenge of the text is that it is outdated and many of the cases are from the late 90s, and there aren't any updates on what has happened to/with these cases since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Graduate level ethics
This is one of the best books I have had since being in school. The format is easy to understand and the references to cases are set up as law briefs, which helps the student to cite the information quickly and accurately. I would use and refer this book to other students of ethics in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Satisfied
The book arrived as promised in the condition listed at the sale; I'd do business with this seller again.

2-0 out of 5 stars The problem is....
Overall, the content is academic. There is little anyone can do to make certain subjects easier to swallow. So, on that topic, it is what it is.However, I expect a new edition to be out soon due the vast amount of errors in the quality of the publication.Whoever edited this text needs to go back and do it right.A good portion of the cases are not on the pages indicated in the index, or the table of contents!Because of this disorganization, the effort to utilize the text, as by its content features, is time consuming and unprofessional. There are numerous grammatical and spelling issues as there are in any other text.I would wait for a better organized edition to become available. As far as content value, it is a $40 book at best, which would cover the value of the cases!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Information, Concepts and Cocnerns about Ethics
Desjardins talks about previous related ethical issues that have occurred for huge corporationsto help individuals understand the importance of moral actions in their everyday lives. The author challenges us to question how well we know our own faith and values in life. This book is very insightful and interesting to read.I recommend this to anyone that wants clarity or maybe even to have a reference guide on ethics in the work place, this is the book to purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Condition
Perfect condition and shipped fast, was also packaged lightly in a very environmentally friendly way which is a big plus.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wordy
This was an "ok" ethics book, but the author is very wordy with making a point. It takes him a page to make a small point. There does not appear to be any uniformity between chapter lengths.Sometimes they are really really long, then sometimes they are normal. It does have some good material in it and the case studies are interesting.Overall it is a good book, but not perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great dose of business ethics
I'm getting to the end of my semester with DesJardins book on Business Ethics. This is a lot more manageable than a hulking textbook with all the extras that I don't use (Ex: Practices Quizzes and Pictures). If you're going to be picking this up for a class, may I recommend sitting down and reading it front to back. The author does tend to relate back to previous chapters, and this can pose a problem when you aren't getting to the final chapters till the end of your semester and the author is telling you to refer back to chapters one and two.

Overall, it is short, it reads like a novel and you could probably chew through it in one weekend and then digest it throughout the semester when your professor helps you develop the ideas from the book more thoroughly. This is a great guide to ethics for any business student who finds social responsibility an important factor in the modern world.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring!
This book is a huge bore.Interesting topic but it's been pummelled to death by the author who some accuse of having been paid by the word - yes it's just that wordy!Too bad it's a required text in school. It would be great is somone else would write a more readable book on business ethics. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A miserable text book.
I can't believe that this book is the standard in most college ethics and business courses. I had to take two ethics classes, which were two of my first courses for this term. I was really excited to start school but this book soon quelled that excitement. Luckily, I also had a business law course to take at the same time so I could work on it when I had to get away from the ethics course for fear of losing my mind.

This book, if you can call it that, it just very poorly written. I don't mean that the mechanics or the grammar was poorly written, it had little organization of ideas and it was very redundant. It was also not written well, there was no form of organization of the material and it suffered from redundancy. See?

Also, this text was very hard to take notes from and I felt most of the material was just padding to fill out the book. Most of the ideas and topics covered were mostly common sense even though the book says that ethics isn't commonsensical. C'mon I mean really? People know it is wrong to steal, use company property for personal use, manipulate markets for personal gain, etc. The book makes it seem that in the business world people are removed from the usual expectations of conduct that society places on individuals and organizations.

I had to write two papers for the one ethics course. One was actually creating my own code of ethics and a standards and procedures policy for a fictitious company. This book was of little help in that area. Everything about code of ethics and what not is scattered throughout the book and in several chapters the book skews off in a tangent that is barely related to the topic. I ended up just b.s.ing my way through the paper and passed with almost a perfect score.

Also many of the examples of ethics violations or ethical dilemmas are never completed, they give an example, leave out the decision of the person in the example and then go back to it a chapter later but still never give any insight into whether the person made a decision and what the decision was.

All in all, this just a very hard book to read, I think the authors are very full of themselves, just as most philosophy experts are. And that is what this book is, a bunch of b.s. philosophy. I rented this book from a rental company online, I am contemplating purchasing the book just so that I can destroy it and there will be one less copy on earth. If you have to use this book for college, woe is you.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was required
The cases in the back of the book are current events and are very interesting. The text chapters could be improved but I did pick up some knowledge that is useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great service and quality
The book is in excellant shape and we received the shipment within a week of our order, just in time for classes to start. We will use them again.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
I agree with the previous posts. It is current and uses good examples. I guess what I don't like is the composition of the book. I am not sure if I can even complain about that without sounding stupid and like I am nagging. It's just really lengthy with little breaks throughout the chapters. Sitting down to read one chapter is really tedious. I don't like it. I think it could have been written in a form that is easier to follow. I have taken many college courses, as I am a senior, and so far, this is the worst. I am not sure if it is because of the subject itself or the book. It just seems that other tedious courses I have taken, I appreciated more because the book was easy to follow without being unnecessarily lengthy and dragging on like this one does. I never look forward to sitting down to open this book up and read two chapters a week. Reading this is almost torturous for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ethics, yea right!
This textbook was very expensive for how much I actually use it. The material in the book is very revelent but the second paragraph states that they are not going to tell you what is right and what is wrong. What is the purpose of this book if they are not going to tell you anything or at least give some guidelines? The stories about our country's big leaders are very interesting and sometimes are differnt than what you think. In all reality I had to have this book for business ethics class, I didn't have a choice. Still the only con to it is the price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not practically useful.
I was somewhat disappointed with this book as the choices of articles used in this book weren't as practically useful as what I would have liked. I would really only use one of the articles (Parable of the Sadhu), and having known that now, I would just buy a reprint directly from HBR.

Would not buy it again. ... Read more

This book provides assistance to employees by taking a journey through the challenging world of business ethics at the ground level of the organization rather than flying through the abstract concepts and philosophical arguments at the treetop level. 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Organized, Poorly Written.
Nobody likes this book in my classes that I'm in. It's dry, repetitive, and flat-out awkward to read at times.

The examples are the only interesting part of the book, but they are few and far between. The rest of the text is just useless fluff.

1-0 out of 5 stars I had to read this one, not by choice
I had this book for a class I took. This book is horrible. I honestly didn't think it was well organized and it did not read like a textbook at all. It gave a lot of ethical examples but with that it got old reading very fast. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is just trying to pick a business ethics books. I don't even recommend it for a class. Its that bad. Sorry, just my opinion

5-0 out of 5 stars New Managing Business Ethics Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethics should be taught sooner than college!
This ethics book is a good comprehensive read.I needed this text for my college course on business ethics. It has definitions, case examples.I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a core foundation of ethical understanding.

I really believe that with all the pressure on today's kids to get good grades and "make it" in the business world, a formal ethics class should be offered starting in junior high!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Academic Resource
This book was used as the primary text, in a Master's Course in Organizational Leadership.

The authors are Linda K. Trevino and Katherine A. Nelson. Both hail from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and it shows in the book.Joe Paterno shows up predictably as a paragon of ethics, on occasion. This would be annoying, if not for the indisputable fact that he is in fact known in this area, so a little consession even for the regional plug is in line.It says something to be coming from the cross-state rival.;)

This book does a very good job of presenting ethics in a way that can be understood despite the varied religious and social value systems that exist within the business community.

If you are looking for a morals primer that dares to take strong stands on what is right and wrong, you will not find it here.Predictably, as an academic book, there is a fairly significant post-modern bent to the material. It appeals to incorporate personal moral codes to be sure, but most appeals are in the abstract and more often then not come across as something that seems obligatory to say, but no real direction as to what that might mean and when to exercise it is offered. It usually reduces to an appeal to "follow your gut."

The book is divided into 5 sections which build upon each other progressively.

Section 1 focuses on the introductory elements of what Business Ethics are and why they should matter. The primary answers to note are that organizations have to manage ethics in terms of a liability to control costs, preserve reputation and maintain market share.

Section 2 relates to ethics and the individual.Descriptions of fundamental issues such as conflicts of interest, legal issues surrounding discrimination and sexual harassment and then whistleblowing's increasing profile in corporate society are covered. Most important, the basis for ethics and how they are arrived at within a Psychological and Social context are examined.

Not surprisingly, in view of the premises the book rests upon, situational ethics predominate.Different approaches are examining and costing consequences, examining whether a higher sense of duty or obligation exists from which to gauge response and yes, there is a nod of the head toward Virtue-based Ethics but no particular "brand" identified or endorsed, which makes the reference curious in that regard.

Some management tools to follow are provided which should indeed prove practical and helpful which was refreshing to see in what could have simply remained as academic tome.

Then follows a strong portion on the Psychological factors of determining right from wrong which addresses such issues as Moral Awareneess and Moral Judgment.Psychological issues such as Script Processing, the emotions involved in ethical decision making and an in-depth look at the Ford Pinto case round this section out.

Section 3 brings the focus onto Managers and Management.Basic issues such as hiring, firing and discipline are dealt with in addition to the important observation that management creates a workplace environment, not only by what is said but moreso by what is modeled. Therefore there are conclusions drawn in terms of what influence management has to enact ethical change within an organization.Primarily the appeal is to behavioral reinforcement and understanding of certain psychological "truths" that have become evident with organizations. There is lots of good material here including reward systems, peer pressure, assigned roles and communications all addressed in turn.A good section exists as well addressing how responsibility diffuses within an organization and that suggests some methods of how to deliberately instill personal responsibility to combat this trend.

Section 4 focuses on specific ethical problems which are endemic within organizations. In particular the competing interests of all stakeholders including shareholders, employees, management, consumers, and the community at large are examined and some methodology for how to navigate through these seemingly perennial conflicts of interest.

Better yet, the organizational culture is addressed with a multitude of case studies and discussion questions to delve in "the belly of the beast" in terms of all that this involves.

An obligatory chapter on Legal Compliance follows which in my opinion was the weakest portion of the book. This type of material is by nature going to be dull, but it also is continually changing and roots things clearly within US corporate culture.

Section 5 at the end moves the focus from what has been exclusively the US and approaches some of the unique issues of the Global Business Environment.Frankly, this too is pretty weak.It is worthy of its own book to deal with the unique characteristics of all the different

Overall, this is an excellent book.It is packed with great contemporary examples from recent history that speak very strongly to the need for a renewed sense of responsibility and ethics in the corporate world.

As is true with most academic books, it is overpriced and designed to move rapidly through editions to keep it that way.$60 for a soft-cover book is just not reasonable.I'm not adverse to paying a fair price for cutting edge knowledge.I expect quality for that not just in information, but also the physical characteristics of the book.

The average reader will find this likely tiresome when compared with more popular books in this area.Corporate offices and managers would be well advised to pick this up and in addition to reading, finding others to work through it as a team and use the many excellent case studies found within to their benefit.

This is primarily for the classroom. If you'll use it and work with it, however, I can see it being an excellent resource for the corporate manager, ethics officer or human resources leader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Managing Business Ethics : Straight Talk About How To Do It Right
So far so good.It is a good tool. Our instructor is very happy with it too. However, next semester the new edition will be used.It is not boring either.I would recommend this book to any future student.

3-0 out of 5 stars Business Ethics Classroom Discussion
This was a mandatory book for an MBA program on Business Ethics. It puts ethics in everyday language and examples and is not all theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Business Ethics Resource
I have long thought other books focused too much on philosophy or large scale ethics problems at corporations. This book gives everyone advice and practical tools to deal with ethics at all levels in a company.I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to find out how to apply ethics in their organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essentials on Business Ethics
This should be mandatory reading for business leaders today. It is one of the leading college textbooks on the subject and for good reason--the stories are incredible.

Having worked at Scott Paper Compnay during the Al Dunlap regime, I know that the stories may be hard to believe but are true.

The chapters do a good job of building on each other and the writing style is readable.

Glad to have the next edition published. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly as Described
The product was exactly as described, shipped quickly and securely, and proved a good value.I would do business with this seller again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best one out there...
I am an ethics consultant and have a masters degree in ethics - and I have read a LOT of ethics books. In the three years since I came upon this text, I have found nothing to equal it.The 24 page introduction (which contains a brilliant explication of moral relativism) is worth the price. This book contains foundational articles that everyone should read, a solid collection of integrated cases, and touches on a wide and useful range of business ethics issues. It is a straightforward book, but it is not designed to be simple. It challenges the reader to think, something that many ethics books do not do.If you only own one book specific to business ethics, this should be it.

For those who are searching for a broader book on ethics in the professions (including non-business professions), I consider "Ethical Issues in Professional Life", by Joan C. Callahan to be the standard by which all others are measured.

5-0 out of 5 stars Objective
This book is the most objective book on business ethics. It presents several ethical theories along with their strengths and weaknesses as an intro, and then it presents case studies relating to a plethora of businesstopics. These topics include accounting and many others left untouched byother authors, and the topics are current and are often taken fromreal-world cases. After each case study, a series of questions areposed--you are supposed to apply the theories here. This book does nottell you what is ethical, it presents different view points and allows thereader to decide for himself/herself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Goodbook for any person studying Philosophy and/or Business
This book has a lot of very interesting examples, theories and philosophies on how to treat people and do things in the business world. It's complete with arguments and definitions of theorists ways of thinking. If you're taking one of those types of classes or are into either of those subjects and ethics, it seems like a solid book. The cover art is deep too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Timing
I received the book just before my class started. I received the in 1 or 2 days with standard shipping.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is a Breach of Ethics
William Shaw's book breaches ethics. The book sells for about an extortionist's price of a hundred dollars and is dry, confusing, and poorly organized. There is no glossary or clearly outlined structure.Shaw loses us in his arcane concepts.Although ethics is a soft science, Shaw presents his perspective on current ethics as if it were hard truth. What we think of as ethical in twenty years from now may be radically different than today (2008)..as history indicates.Although Shaw uses the terms "ethics" and "morality" interchangeably, he does a poor job of showing the real basis for moral thinking which is religion.Christ and Mohamed were better ethical philosophers and did more for humanity than Kant or the Utilitarians.Still, the monotheistic tradition gets little more than a footnote under the sketchy and ambiguous ramblings to come out of the Enlightenment that Shaw loves.Shaw would suggest that business decisions should be based on these impossible schools of thought. The end of the book and course left me more confused than before.I know that ethics is important and all for university clout, but this book and its scattered approach turns off students and does more harm to the future of business practice.I notice many students and recently graduated people in the business world boasting that ethics is important because of this fad.Now we are allowed to be clean business people just by saying "I believe strongly in ethics".Before, we had to build a solid reputation by not screwing people over. This was something people developed on their own and truly practiced.Sorry, but we can't learn ethics from some fancy book.Take for example the person who sold me my book on this website. The student, after finishing ethics, posts the book for sale.I purchased the book media mail. Two weeks later, the book never comes. So, I emailed the seller who told me that he sent the book the previous week and I can expect it any day.Two days later, the book showed up and I noticed that he paid for express shipping on the same day as the email.Notice that the seller lied to me via email.Apparently, he either forgot to send the book or he skipped over the notification email. This happens because Amazon.com sends notification emails that appear almost identical to promotional emails. The same thing happened to me last year.I apologized to the buyer and promptly shipped the book express at my own loss. This was the right thing to do.Even though I don't know the student living on the other side of the country, I wouldn't want to be in that position of showing up to class without reading the material.I feel like my seller express shipped my book because he was scared of reprisal.Notice that he did not apologize and in fact lied.I don't know what grade he got in ethics, but he was not able to apply his learning even with it fresh in his mind.I blame the book not for not teaching ethics, but for pretending to teach something that is unteachable in only one semester.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Appreciation
I ordered the book and received it about the time stated that it should come. It is in excellent condition. The price was great and I so appreciated doing business with you. Keep up the good work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for more than healthcare administrators
I have been giving lectures based on this book in a variety of settings to clinical therapists (of very different levels of sophistication), physicians, bioethicists, and administrators. It is eminently readable, but also profoundly practical. The material covers nearly every aspect of healthcare delivery. The balance is excellent. It is never ponderous, but rather a very enjoyable book to read.I sometimes have to force myself to slog though heavy ethical papers and texts. This book was difficult to put down.Throughout, guidelines are provided for considering and arriving at decisions that will be well thought out andexquisitely balanced. While I would make this text required reading for all would-be healthcare administrators, I also unreservedly recommend it to anyone and everyone working in a healthcare setting.Even the issue of typically low pay for housekeeping staff is authoritatively addressed.Needless to say, I wholeheartedly recommend it without reservation. The only problem is that others will want to borrow it - you may have to be assertive to get it back. Therefore, be prepared to "help" others purchase their own copies. ...
