MUCH NEEDED BOOK
I was very glad when I found this book. I have the BLACK'S LAW DICTIONARYbut I think I like this book better. I do not have any legal background and even I can understand what is being written.

An excellent & handy resource for beginning law students!
Gilbert's Pocket Law Dictionary is a professional, succinct, and handy resource for beginning law, social studies, and government studies students. Its small, handy format makes it easy to have ready in any class, and provides professional and easy to understand definitions for the layman. There haven't been very many terms that I haven't been able to find in this professional yet affordable resource.

Multiple versions make this purchase a no-brainer.
I really love this handy reference book - it has all of the standard definitions you could hope to find that revolve anywhere in close proximity to legal jargon.I am in school right now and I use this dictionary on a regular basis.The one perk that stands out, is that the entire dictionary is added to CD (also included with the book).By transferring the CD contents to flash drive, I leave the print version at home and take the electronic version with me wherever I may be inclined to do homework.Even if I'm stuck somewhere without an internet connection, I have an entire legal dictionary readily available.

The electronic version is web browser based, and includes the option to search for terms only, or for terms and within definitions of other terms.The second option makes it easier to locate other definitions which sometimes help put a single term into better context.Plus, definitions contain hyperlinks to any words which may be defined in the dictionary already.

This is probably of little use to someone already familiar with the legal industry, but is a must have for aspiring, new law students and paralegals alike.

Good, Basic Law Dictionary
ORAN'S DICTIONARY OF THE LAW -third edition is an affordable legal dictionary.
It's not as comprehensive as Black's or Ballentine's Law Dictionaries.

It does have some good features-
The Basic 50 is fifty words that are used frequently in definitions. Some of the most basic words in law.

Directions for help in finding information on unlisted words.

Appendix B, Lawyer Talk. This section contrasts legal jargon and plain English.

The Appendix on Legal Research was brief and basic, but also helpful.

THIS BOOK JUST DOESN'T DO IT!
I thought this would be such a good reference book to have on hand, especially studying to be a paralegal, and it did have some good reviews, from what I remember....... or I wouldn't have gotten it.And I liked the fact it was small, thick, soft-material-type paperback (I love those kind!); ya know, an easy, quick-reference type book - perfect for studying, right?Well, wrong.This is the 4th edition, Copyright 1996.Maybe that's why.But I thought, gosh, surely it's got tons of legal words for studying paralegal.Man, nearly 1 out of every 2 words I look up are not in this book.That's 5o%; and sometimes 2 out of 2.It claims to have More Than 3,000 - so I'm thinkin.......ok, that oughtta be suffish.NO. The deal is this:this book fails miserably in what I got it for - to help me study and to have a Quick REF on hand to be able to look up words (again, quickly is the key here),learn what they mean, and not have to fiddle-fudge around checking out 3 or 4 books just to get a DEFINITION!I hate wasting time, and having to go through more steps to accomplish something simple. Maybe if I found the latest edition with 5k or more words, then I wouldn't be so disappointed.I adore the style of this paperback - and to me that's important because it has good usability, the solid black, soft/thick paperback & gold-stamped lettering, the pages are not really thick, and it just "feels good";something I like when I have to deal with a lot of page turning and book opening!I didn't want to dislike this book, but it just doesn't have a lot of the words I search for!A 'good' legal reference would be great to have on a Kindle!Gosh, wish I could afford one of those; I'd be elated!

A Must Reference
Should you have any interest in the law -- and who among us does not? -- this handy
book is an absolute must.It is smaller, and therefore less comprehensive, than the
Black's Law Dictionary, but for that reason it is easier to use and carry with you.
There are, I found, few topics left uncovered -- most of them in U.S. Constitional Law --
but in all other areas the book is extremely valuable.

Law Dictionary
Required book for my Paralegal course.Nothing wrong with the book or what is contained in it, but only beef is the size.I noticed that many of my fellow students had a Barron's law dictionary that was a third of the size and nicely bound.I should have looked further into law dictionaries before buying this one, as too big and clumsy.

Should be in your Library no matter what
There is not much that can be said for dictionaries except how much they help you.Whether you are a lawyer or layman, this is a valuable reference to those confusing legal terms you may periodical see on contracts, in the news, on warranties and other places.

Black has been around for a long time and is the most concise of all the dictionaries I have seen.Pick it up and you wont regret it.

As for the dictionary itself, it's really good. Contains lots of information useful for any lawyer civil or criminal or etc. Contains any term you might need to know in law. So for it's content I'd give it 5 stars. But the reason I gave 3 stars is that the edition quality really dissapointed me. The paper quality is very poor - I honestly didn't expect this. Wonderful resource!
This is a great resource for interpreters! Legal interpreting is nerve racking enough. So knowing that I have a clear understanding of the vocabulary, and how to sign it, is a huge relief! I reccomend this dictionary to all professional interpreters, it's a must-have!

Not As Great As Expected
I admit it. I'm not a big fan of Elaine Costello. It seems to be that a lot of the signs in this book are English...not ASL. Of course, there aren't that many books out there about legal sign language, so it is helpful to a point. Just make sure before you start using the signs that they are true ASL signs and not Signed English. ... Read more

Legal Dictionary?
I have a hardbound Black's but got this one to carry with me to class at law school.My advice is to get Black's paperback.I am very disappointed by the frequency with which I have to go to Black's after finding that the Collin dictionary does not have the term I need to find.It has usual terms like orphan, disrespect, and kill, but does not have many terms you'd think you'd find in a legal dictionary.Today it was "assumpsit".Who knows what it will be tomorrow.

Not very useful
As an in-house translator at a law firm in Tokyo, I find this dictionary to be pretty useless for most practical matters. Plenty of legal vocabulary is missing and plenty of not-very-legal vocabulary is included. I'm not sure why it includes English and Japanese versions of the U.S. and Japanese constitutions, either. WWWJDIC and ALC, both available online for free, are *much* more useful for everyday legal translation. ... Read more
