Product Description
Eating disorders are but one of many specific pathological responses to the pressures of the modern world. In group therapy, patients battling bulimia nervosa can learn from one another how to heal the emotional wounds that have put their health in jeopardy. Group therapy addresses the four etiologies of eating disorders by teaching the sociocultural context, discussing both the psychological and familial constellation of each member, and providing a forum to address the physiological aspects of the disorder by discussing the benefits of or disappointments in medications. The only eating-disorder treatment manual for group application available, this book presents an integrative treatment model bringing together psychoeducational, cognitive behavioral, relational, experiential, and interpersonal methods. The introduction begins with a detailed discussion of bulimia's cultural roots as well as its epidemiology and etiology, moves to a survey of available treatments, and concludes with a rationale for use of the integrative group method.Following chapters provide instructions for leading a time-limited therapy group for bulimic patients, including a discussion of screening procedures for prospective members and a guide for processing group dynamics. These precede the core of the book: step-by-step descriptions of the twelve structured therapy sessions. Interspersed throughout are group reading assignments and reflective essays. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest!
I read this book without any expectancies whatsoever, and found it to be refreshingly honest! While the writer's uninhibited style may shock, her lifestory is inspiring and heart warming. It was written as is, with no artificial ingredients. A must read for anyone who is interested in human beings and human feelings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Severely Disappointing
An avid reader of books of all types, including ones such as this, I was originally thrilled to come across this book. But once I picked it up, I had to force myself to the very end, which is not usually the case.In a word, awful; and I hope that it may have been due to translation.Where was the editor?Choppy and simple, it is not worth picking up because there are so many other more poignant novels of the same genre out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst I've read
I've read a lot of books on eating disorders and this one is by far the worst one I've read.I'm assuming English is not the author's first language because a lot of the book didn't seem to make sense.I was really excited to read this book, since I struggle with bulimia and depression, but I was really disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars It touched my soul
There are so many self-help books, this is one with a big difference: it will touch your soul. By baring her own struggles, Veliz shows us all how to cope with our own shortcomings and how to be true to one's self and listen to our own inner voice. It is only then that we can celebrate our own special talents. Her journeys and triumphs make for fascinating reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.
I got this book because I struggle with bulimia myself but found it to be more about her relationships with her family, her son, and her ex-husband than about her relationship with her bulimia. The writing style was hard to follow and confusing, which made the plot hard to follow as well and dissapointing. While it is a story of strength and courage, it isn't as focused on bulimia as it leads itself to be. ... Read more

Product Description
Every year, thousands of women and hundreds of males are diagnosed with Bulimia nervosa - an eating disorder and psychological condition caused by binge eating and purging what has been eaten. Emotional havoc ensues - guilt, depression and self-condemnation followed by physical problems - malnutrition, dehydration, organ damage and teeth erosion from the stomach acids used in purging. Dr. Brian McKay sees the obvious oral symptoms of bulimia nearly every day in his Seattle and Southern California dental practices. The frequency of these patients inspired McKay to write this book about the diagnosis, treatment and recovery from bulimia from a very unique perspective: The dental chair. With over 25 years of experience as a dentist, Dr. McKay learned the sad facts: 26% of all bulimia is first diagnosed by a dentist. In this landmark book - the first of its kind - he sounds the clarion call for a united effort between two professions -the Eating Disorder Treatment professionals and the Dental world to join forces and treat this debilitating disease and create a safety net for its victims. Discover the facts. Learn to take action. Find out how to care for bulimics everywhere in a caring, nonjudgmental, revolutionary approach. ... Read more

Product Description
The publication 4 years ago of Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e), written by two eating disorder specialists at London's world-famous Maudsley Hospital, was a milestone in the treatment of bulimia. For the first time a self-help book was shown, by rigorous clinical trials, to cure a significant fraction of women suffering from bulimia, and to reduce the therapist contact time needed by others.Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e)offered an efficient way of treating bulimic patients, which would be valued by any resource-conscious health service.

The authors of Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) have now written this Clinician's Guide, to help health care professionals maximize the benefit that patients obtain from the self-help book. Based on the authors' wide-ranging experience of treating eating disorder patients, it provides a step-by-step account of how the chapters inGetting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) can be used to ameliorate various aspects of bulimics' difficulties, with examples drawn from real patients' case histories. Particular emphasis is given to the problem of motivating patients who are reluctant to change their behavior, using Miller and Rollnick's motivational interviewing approach.

The Clinician's Guide to Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) will be invaluable for all those treating sufferers of bulimia. ... Read more

Product Description
In an extensively revised new edition of the successful Anorexia and Bulimia, Richard Gordon includes new information and discussion of the latest ideas in this rapidly growing research field. There is extensive discussion of the clinical aspects of disorders, in particular their relationship to obsessive-compulsive disorder, plus data of recovery and mortality. It also provides accounts of the latest research on the epidemiological status of eating disorders and the subsequent debate that this work has engendered. Further new features include the analysis of the role of sexual abuse in eating disorders; the relationship of obesity to anorexia and bulimia, and consideration of the recent debates surrounding the politics of eating disorders. The past two decades have witnessed an enormous increase in the number of cases of eating disorders in industrial societies. Richard Gordon brings together historical and cultural perspectives, as well as his own clinical experience, in order to examine the sociocultural roots of this apparent epidemic. The high incidence of these once rare conditions in contemporary societies can be traced to a number of interrelated factors: the changing role of women, the increasingly difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood, the social importance attached to physical beauty which focuses on thin body shape, a general pursuit of health and fitness and, ironically, the glamorization of anorexia in the mass media which has made its symptoms fashionable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!!
This is an exceptionally well written book which serves as an excellent resource for those seeking recovery or for anyone trying to better understand what it's like to battle an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reader Review
This is just an awesome book.As a recovering anorexic, i have found this book not only hopeful and inspiring, but helpful and fascinating. It has made me think of my eating disorder in a whole new way.Instead of talking about afflicted people as "sick," it refers to "insiders" and discusses a way of thinking where one views their disorder as separate from themself, rather than who they are. It's fascinating and i highly reccommend it for people suffering from an eating disorder, those who are recovered, friends and family of sufferers, and just anyone who has an interest.great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
As someone who has struggled with anorexia for over half my life, I have often found myself reading anything on anorexia I could lay my hands on; desperately searching for the reassurance that comes from knowing one is not alone in one's experiences, as well as for some elusive insight that might assist me in resisting anorexia's stranglehold over my life.Yet frequently I have come away from such reading feeling dissatisfied and disheartened. Not so with 'Biting the Hand that Starves You'; in this book I found so much of what I had been searching for and a whole lot more.

While the authors are not the first professionals to draw on `insider knowledges' (the knowledges of people with first-hand experiences of anorexia/bulimia), the prominence and the respect accorded to such knowledges is unprecedented. The result is a book that speaks compellingly of anorexia/bulimia, and crucially, does so in a manner that is never patronising, pathologising or didactical.

Providing exciting new ways of thinking and speaking about anorexia/bulimia, the book engenders a sense of hope - a 'commodity' that is often desperately lacking, yet so vital when it comes to resisting anorexia/bulimia.

I highly recommend the book to all readers, from those struggling with anorexia/bulimia, to their family and friends, and health professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for this Great Book!
I only wish that Rick, David, and Ali had written this book years ago! Because Biting the Hand that Starves You would have been an incredible source of information, motivation, and hope when I was desperately struggling in the depths of my eating disorder.

I was thrilled to see that the book vividly illustrates the vicious dialogue that occurs between the eating disorder and the individual who suffers with it. Throughout my recovery, psychotherapist and author Thom Rutledge encouraged me to practice this very dialogue between my true self (Jenni) and my eating disorder (`Ed') over and over again, which was crucial to my finding the amazing freedom I experience today.

Biting the Hand that Starves You includes many uplifting, inspirational personal accounts that reveal people can and do beat anorexia/bulimia! Within the book, the authors compassionately share how you can really make practical steps to join the ranks of those who already walk that path of independence.

Unlike many other books, Biting the Hand that Starves You goes a step beyond just focusing on how to recover from specific eating disordered behaviors. It also talks about moving on and reclaiming your life --- providing great insight on overcoming perfectionism, taking risks, and even pursuing dreams and passions.

This is one book that I am glad I came across on the shelves of eating disorder literature. I just wish it would have appeared a little bit sooner!

Jenni Schaefer, author of Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too (McGraw-Hill)

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary book
Biting the Hand that Starves You is a very special book that it likely to change the way you view eating disorders. It contains many first hand accounts of women's struggles to free themselves from the ways bulimia and anorexia control their lives. And it maps out the nature of this control, which is beyond the attempt to control food and weight--it's tied to societial messages about how women should behave (take care of others, be nice to everyone, perform well in many arenas, etc.).The book is primarily written for therapists but will be helpful to others affected by bulimia and anorexia. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars lacking
I have both me Leah and read her book.I met her on two occasions at conferences I attended.I also read her book. The book does look into the horrors that I know are part of the struggle with the 'demon'.However, I question the sincerity in the author.Due to the reception I received from her at both encounters, I question the sincerity of her attempts and wonder if it isn't all a grasp at further fame.

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest reflection from a wonderful person
Leah Hulan was my roommate at the 1994 Miss USA Pageant in South Padre, Texas (I was Miss North Dakota). The reflection and insight this book relects is real.Leah truly is a person we would all like to be like... and for her to have the courage and strength to share her story is a gift to the rest of us. The book is wonderfully written. This book would be helpful to anyone struggling with their own disease or for those knowing those who are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leah Hulan attacks the subject of eating disorders
I think this book is an excellent detail of how society puts pressures on young women to be beautiful and femimine, no matter how hurt and mistreated you are on the inside. Love yourselves, Eleni

4-0 out of 5 stars This book tells of a horrifying disease in which many suffer
As I read this book I remembered my aspects of my own eating disorder. I felt as though demons had taken over my body and I had to fight them off. There were days that I was as normal as the next person, but then therewere days that I could not remember even waking in the morning. I was in atreatment facility with Leah a few years ago. She seemed to have a grip onbreaking the cycle. However, it can still be a struggle when times getrough. She bares all in this graphic tale of her life as she lived it. Iadmire her courage to re-live those years.

3-0 out of 5 stars A disturbing tale
Leah Hulan is a friend of mine. This book details her struggle with a lifetime of rejection and loneliness. These maladies later manifested themselves in her ongoing struggles with eating disorders. She bares hersoul on the demons that have tormented her. While this is not the greatestbook ever written and tends to be overly dramatic at times, it is a gripingtale on Leah's struggle to find herself and take control of her life. Iwould recommend the book to anyone struggling with eating disorders or havesomeone close to them similarly afflicted. ... Read more

Product Description
Eating disorders, which include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and compulsive eating are conditions well recognized by the medical profession and the media, and are increasingly gaining understanding in the UK Church too. Yet while there have been Christian books written on people's experiences of "chaotic" eating, churches and individuals are crying out for a good resource book that will help them respond to the needs of those with eating disorders. Helena Wilkinson, herself an ex-anorexic, and now a counsellor, maintains that eating disorders serve a purpose in people's lives, and addresses the underlying factors - such as family background, pain and fear of responsibility - that contribute to eating disorders. The book is a practical and compassionate guide based on extensive personal experience. Other titles by Helena Wilkinson include "Puppet on a String" and "Snakes and Ladders". ... Read more

This work offers a comprehensive, theoretically integrated model for understanding the aetiology of bulimia and for implementing treatment stategies. Drawing on an exhaustive analysis of the research, it describes the ways in which, for example, a family history of affective disorders, disturbances in the mother-child relationship, and a cultural preoccupation with thinness may interact to predispose a young woman to bulimia. In keeping with the aetiological view, this volume presents a multidimensional treatment approach, based on a unusual blend of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural principles. ... Read more
