5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read & Practical
From the beginning the authors tell you their style is going to be conversational and it is. They write like broadcasters. Students can gage authenticity for themselves by looking at what a person has done and these two authors have valid credentials. I decided to do a little Internet investigation myself and discovered that Sharyl Attisson has her own consulting firm for would-be journalists.

Since my background is TV journalism before entering management and acedeme, I can relate to a lot of the "war stories" they share. Like one of the other reviewers mentioned, the section near the end on advise for people entering the field is solid. I did those things myself when I was getting started.

This book covers the news gathering process as well as writing. They add an ethics dimension in every part of the book. Also they make sure students have a clear understanding of the most basic terms used in the industry. Other writers would do well to follow that example alone, if nothing else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth It
Jam-packed with more clear, practical info than any I've seen. A bit pricey but it's comparable with other required broadcast texts and better editorially. My favorite was the Careers chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good, but . . .
This is a fine book.I appreciate the concision and depth, certainly an asset of the authors' experience. This could be the best book on broadcast writing, but the price is too steep. This is a good $30 book, but to ask $50 is too much for students going into the lowest paid position requiring a college degree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside Info
I was intrigued by the idea a book written by Ms. Attkisson and other current on-air professionals. I was not disappointed. It teaches writing while providing thought-provoking anecdotes and examples taken from the authors' real experiences.

I found "Writing Right for Broadcast and Internet News" very helpful in explaining how TV writing is translated to online writing. I was also impressed by how current it was, including examples from the September 11 attacks.

I especially liked the added bonus information on salaries, and career advice from professionals like Kerry Sanders, who's been all over TV reporting from Iraq for NBC.

In my TV writing class, we used the AP Broadcast News Handbook, which, as the title implies, is almost entirely a "Style Guide". We also used the Prentice-Hall Handbook for Writers, which is old and had nothing to do with the specifics of TV writing. "Writing Right" has a basic broadcast Style Guide, but the one in the AP Book is much more comprehensive.

"Writing Right" is more about the basics of finding and writing great news stories. For that, I heartily recommend it to anyone considering a career that requires writing news copy. ... Read more

Product Description
Indecency--arguably among the most provocative and incendiary issues in today's media--is speech at the edge of social tolerance. This timely volume examines broadcast and Internet indecency from legal and social perspectives, utilizing current cases and well-publicized examples. In exploring the issues associated with this highly controversial area, author Jeremy Harris Lipschultz makes headway toward an understanding of how indecency, as communication on the fringes of social norms, functions in defining free expression through specific types of speech. He contrasts conceptualizations of indecency and obscenity, synthesizes case law and social research, and develops theoretical generalizations for future research and study. His work provides a comprehensive examination of broadcast and Internet indecency issues and cases that serve to test generalizations about freedom of expression and one's ability to define free speech. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Writing Copy
This book was single handedly responsible for taking my copy writing from good to much better.
Herschell Gordon Lewis has written the benchmark of copy writing with this volume. His writing about our writing is so practical, you'll be asking yourself "Why didn't I think of that?"
Buy this book. Read it. Practice its lessons. Improve your copy writing.
Will move you forward years beyond your experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth rereading - and reading once again
I took this book off my shelf to write a blurb for a bibliography and in flipping through it, realized just how much I learned from Herschell Gordon Lewis about the subtle nuances of writing copy.He understands the power of words like few other marketing experts I know. I highly recommend this and all of his other books on writing copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps Readers Improve Their Writing Skills!
Herschell Gordon Lewis, the author of many writing books, including Cybertalk That Sells, has updated his book, On the Art of Writing Copy. This book offers a fresh approach to learning the in's and out's copy writing. By gleaning from the many actual printed ads and rules provided in the book, every reader will begin producing better copy.

Lewis provides bold and creative solutions to creating copy for any occasion - including traditional and online advertising campaigns, corporate usage, news reporting, fund-raising, and general correspondence. Throughout the book, Lewis presents actual printed magazine advertisements that demonstrate various methods of communicating - his insightful critiques of them will help readers to structure, clarify, and polish up their own work.

Lewis has mastered the art of writing and so will his readers who apply the contents of this book.Specific instruction includes choosing and using words, exercising care in selecting words, manufacturing words for impact, creating effective sentence structure, producing motivational copy, writing guarantees, and targeting specific audiences. His short course on grammar and usage will help readers improve their writing skills. They will see immediate results.

This book will cater to the writing needs of many, including Web developers and online businesses. They will find this book particularly useful for creating professional-grade Website copy, e-marketing newsletters, and e-mail correspondence. This book would make a great writing class instructional guide. This book is essential reading!

1-0 out of 5 stars On the Art of Blowing Your Own Horn
Instead of offering copywriters solid suggestions or advice based on experience, Lewis instead gambles that he will reach similarly jaded, sarcastic and negative readers who are eager to ride alongside him on hishigh horse. The author seems more interested in listening to his ownembittered critique of others' work than in instructing readers with realinformation.

I disagree strongly with most every advertisement he holdsup as an example of ineffective copy writing and/or visual communication.Itis almost as if Lewis belives his zealous slashing of others' work canreplace helpful examples. It is unfortunate that a book like this getspublished with such a promising title. Lewis doesn't even come close toproviding any sort of tangible help for copywriters who want to increasetheir repertoire or get another professional perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Again, a winner book on copy and ads
Again, Herschell Gordon Lewis has written a great teaching volume on copy and ads.

In just the first four chapters, I ended up writing three new approaches to sell my wares. And, there are twenty three (23) or nearly TwoDozen more chapters for inspiration.

As an engineer turned merchant, thebiggest drawback to the works of H G Lewis is his assumption that thereader actually understands the English language. This is sometimes a shockto an engineer who defines a sentence simply as : " It starts with abig letter, and ends with a period."Reading these works actuallyimproves my understanding of my native tongue.

The examples used arequite up to date. Lots of visuals are presented for one to relate theideas.

I specifically appreciate seeing the many examples of High Tech(modest budget) ads which he has selected as examples of Hucksterism. Clever guys substiting cleverness for understanding - a deadlycombination.

I look forward to making money from reading this work.

Oh, it is also just plain fun to read as well.

Product Description
In this collection, scholars from various backgrounds discuss how emerging changes in media content and delivery influence culture, education, international relations, and human expectations in the Arab world. It traces global media trends of convergence and competition for a fragmented and diverse audience. Communication around the globe is easier now than any other time in history. Technology has expanded to the extent that it is affordable to large populations and consequently there are ramifications for the way people are interacting. The proliferation of social media such as Twitter and FaceBook has caused traditional media to alter the way business has been conducted. Educators, politicians, and merchants have all had to change as well. Convergence has meant a paradigm shift in the media landscape. In this book these emerging global media trends are examined from various perspectives. Certain regions of the world are viewed from sociopolitical and cultural perspectives. Citizen journalism is now a vital part of the media mix as decisions are made at the polls. Technologies of the 21st century provide options that previous generations did not enjoy.Media organizations have to be managed differently, educators have to prepare students in a different way, and governments have to work in the midst of a glass house created by the openness of such an age. Regulators are behind in adapting to the new realities. The emerging global media culture continues to expand and alter the way people live. This book considers those changes in these various arenas in the United States and other countries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting up to speed
I'm not your average radio guy. I never went to school to learn any aspect of radio, nor was I already in the radio biz when I started my radio program. The truth is, I had never even read a book like this one when I began broadcasting "On the Road to Tsiyon." My story is very simple. I was passionate about getting out my message. Creating Tsiyon Radio was the means to that end. That's why, for me, producing the content was never the problem. It was the tech issues that were the big hurdle at first. Frankly, some of our early programs are great on the content side but less than polished on the sound production side. Fortunately, through study and experimentation production quality kept getting better, until we reached a professional standard of production. Armed with little more knowledge of radio than our own private radio universe, we soon found ourselves being broadcast internationally. At that point the time came to get up to speed on the radio industry and how it operates. That's when I turned to "Creating Powerful Radio" for those answers. This book was great for that, since it gives a wonderful overview of how to produce great radio in every department of the radio business. This has really helped me to interface with the stations that carry our program. The book was also a great confidence builder, in that I learned from reading the book that I was already doing a lot that the book recommends. I found out from reading the book that the enthusiasm and drive to share my message, which I brought to my program from the start, is a principle factor involved in "Creating Powerful Radio" - which is one reason why my program had intuitively already incorporated many of the vital ingredients put forward in the book. Beyond that, I learned some tweaks and tips from the book that have helped me to fine-tune my program. To others like me who may need a powerful overview of radio to quickly bring you up to speed, this is definitely a great pick.
