Great Book except for one thing
A great book on Covered Bridges except for the inclusion of one Canadian Bridge, the 45 river bridge in NB Canada. Its not in the US, LOL One mistake in an otherwise good book on historic covered bridges.

Pretty good
I really enjoyed this book but it does get a bit heavy into the local politics at times.It was written in 1977 but the age doesn't affect it too much.

A Book to Treasure!
I just loved this book.I have been in my "New York mode" for quite some time, just living in the great city vicariously!Wish I could move back there, but can't afford it!A beautiful book, I highly recommend it.Beautiful pictures of the bridges and their history.A lovely look at New York's treasures.

Best book on the subject
The photos and subject coverage are first rate, the writing style is workmanlike and effective, so if you are interested in bridge architecture and New York City history, this book is a must-have.I would have liked a bit less coverage of how the brisges constructions were finanaced, and more on the actual building process.Nevertheles, I really enjoyed this book.

A Pleasure To Read
Don't let the title fool you, this is not an engineering book. Rather, it is a pleasant history of the construction and importance of many of New York City's most important bridges. As everyone already knows, New York City is world-famous for its many impressive skyscrapers, but without its equally impressive bridges the city as we know it today could not exist. The narrative is detailed enough to give the reader a solid base of information about each span, but you don't need an engineering degree to understand this material. And all the added photos and illustrations help even more. If you are interested in what makes New York such a vibrant city you have to learn about its bridges as well as its buildings. This book is a wonderful way to do that.

This is a reissue by Dover of a classic history and exhibit book. Covers all the major bridges in the New York City area. For both the casually interested and the specialist, the author has mined volumes of engineering periodicals and original records to cover not only the well known crossings such as the Brooklyn, TriBorough and George Washington bridges but also the lesser known aqueduct bridges over the Harlem River between the Bronx and Manhattan, and the railroad bridges; structures not usually featured in postcards and tour books because they do not present spectacular and soaring vistas against the sky. This is a really touching story about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is very educational.

Spanning Washington: Historic Highway Bridges Of The Evergreen State
An excellent summary of the various types of structures used in Washington bridges down through the years.Specific locations and history given for each major bridge.Not a structural engineering text, but should be read by any northwest civil engineering type.

Surprisingly Fascinating Study of Washington Bridges
I've got to say that the first thing that came to mind when I saw this book on Washington's Bridges was the famous 'Galloping Gertie' bridge at Tacoma Narrows that fell down. Then I thought of the floating bridges that the folk at the Department of Transportation seem to like. I would have been disappointed if these bridges hadn't been included in this book. But they were, along with a bunch of other bridges that have failed also. One failed when a herd of sheep crossed it. Another when fireworks set it on fire. Earthquakes and the eruption of Mt. St. Helens caused more to fail. Then there was the one where a forty ton logging truck attempted to cross a bridge designed for a five ton load.

But enough about failed bridges. This is really a book on the hundreds of other bridges around the State of Washington. Some of these are magnificant structures. A lot are surprisingly different, one bridge for instance that was bought war surplus. And I didn't realize that there were still three wooden covered bridges in the state.

This is mostly a picture book, with just enough technical description as to the types of bridges to make it even more interesting. A lot of these bridges would make a good weekend excursion trip to go see. If you're interested in this sort of thing, this is a most interesting book. It's one that I intend to take along on vacations to tell us a bit about where we are going. ... Read more

Before that war, not a single Hudson River bridge or tunnel had been built. Covered Bridges Across North America
We are in the process of constructing a covered bridge on our rural property and one of our contractors suggested this book to gain ideas.
We were disappointed and didn't find many of the pictures very useful.
Instead, we'll probably use it as a coffee table book in our lake cabin.
