5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent method book for HS trumpet students
The book incorporates technique exercises, scales, lip slurs, etc. with classic selections from orchestra repertoire. As the book progresses, the selections become more lengthy, ending with several page-long etudes. It could stand to be updated for a modern audience (it obviously is still printed from the original plates, but has far fewer actual errors than Book 1 from this series).Recommended highly by a professional trumpeter and trumpet teacher; it engages students' interest and is truly progressive in its organization, and, in my opinion, stresses many of the important skills students need to master. ... With this easy-to-follow guide, a beginner will soon understand how the instruments work and how to assemble them, get the science behind the sound, master musical language and the techniques for fingering and tonguing, and play such pieces as a theme and variations by Mozart and George Gershwin's Summertime. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too many directions at once
After borrowing a fried's alto sax and messing around for a bit, I rented a clarinet and got this book. I had never touched a clarinet before and was looking for a book to help me get started before I pursued lessons. I had piano lessons as a kid, so I can read music.

This book rushes through fundamentals like assembling the instrument, cleaning it, holding it and blowing on it correctly. It provides a fingering chart without explanation--this took me hours to decipher. It offers a short history of the instruments and an introduction to musical notation. The bulk of the book is a survey of music history, touching on different classical composers and offering sample sheet music from each. The music selections are NOT for beginners.

I honestly can't figure out whom this book is for. For teaching myself rudimentary clarinet-playing, I found some video tutorials on YouTube much more helpful. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Keeper
There's little here most brass players haven't heard many times before. And having it come from a name performer doesn't make it any more valuable, especially when it's as poorly organized as this compilation.

The book is a fund raiser for NAMM, a lobbyist and trade organization for manufacturers and retailers of musical instruments. Royalties for the book are donated to NAMM which, among other things, promotes music education in schools.

Someone came up with the thought of formatting it as a cookbook. Each contributor was asked to write a brief article on whatever they want - an extreme case of editorial abdication which resulted in the predictable redundancy and inconsistency. When the articles came in, you would hope someone would notice the cookbook idea wasn't working and either drop that format or hire a copyeditor to make it work. Unfortunately, they soldiered on and published them as written, in alphabetical order by author.

The most egregious example is Mr. VerMeulen's. Not content with the obfuscation possibilities offered by the cookbook metaphor alone, he adds a race car metaphor. One must slog through octane, continuously-variable transmissions, and the consequences of running a six-cylinder engine on five cylinders. Two suggestions:1. When the actual point you are trying to make ends up in parentheses, something's wrong with the format.2. When the metaphor (octane) is more difficult to understand than your point (take a deep breath), drop the metaphor. If you have the patience to find his three main points, it's actually one of the better contributions, but hardly a model of effective communication.

This book is worth a browse at the library, but I don't think most brass players would ever want to refer to it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
The essays compiled in this book are nothing short of fantastic.I am stunned at how few of my fellow brass players that I know who own this book. The advice given represents some of the greatest brass players out there today. It is a must own for active brass musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook great!
This book is an excellent piece of literature for any serious brass player. The advice from the pros is invaluable! Also ideal for a collegiate brass student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tips for all brass musicians.

Product Description
Told in the words of the musicians themselves, Keeping the Beat on the Street celebrates the renewedpassion and pageantry among black brass bands in New Orleans. Mick Burns introduces the people who play the music and shares their insights, showing why New Orleans is the place where jazz continues to grow.

Uniformed brass bands have been around since the late-nineteenth century, throughout Europe and the United States, but African American brass bands in New Orleans have always played music differently: the way it is lived on the street. Performing in funeral processions and in parades for social clubs, they learned how to play by interacting with their audiences. This spontaneity and feeling became trademarks of jazz.

Brass bands waned during the civil rights era but revived around 1970 and then flourished in the 1980s, when the music became cool with the younger generation. In the only book to cover this revival, Burns interviews members from a variety of bands, including the Fairview Baptist Church Brass Band, the Dirty Dozen, Tuba Fats’ Chosen Few, and the Rebirth Brass Band.He captures their thoughts about the music, their careers, audiences, influences from rap and hip-hop, the resurgence of New Orleans social and pleasure clubs and second lines, traditional versus funk style, recording deals, and touring.

"My dream is I would love to win a Grammy with a brass band," confides Philip Frazier III of the Rebirth Brass Band. "But if I had to do it again for no money, I would, because I love doing it." For anyone who loves jazz and the city where it was born, Keeping the Beat on the Street is a book to savor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Time Line of NOLA Brass Bands
Dating back to Danny Barker, Tuba Fats and Leroy Jones in the 1970s, this book takes you on a personal tour of the progression of NOLA Brass Bands. It is essentially the evolution of this artform as told by the people leading this renaissance. I picked this book up and couldn't put it down!

This music has propagated throughout the country to include groups based in NY, Boston, Minneapolis, and even Madison WI.It is nice to hear the stories of the Rebirth, Dirty Dozen, Fairview and Hurricane Bands, and the most recent generations that include New Birth, Soul Rebels and others. Long live NOLA Brass Music!

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting overview of pre-Katrina Brass Band history
This book gives an overview of the history of brass bands as told by the musicians themselves. It's interesting hearing the differences between the older brass bands and the newer brass bands, and how they regard themselves and the other bands. The social context of brass band music in New Orleans is incredibly interesting. It starts in school and lasts for life.To see a history such as this is intriguing.

I do wish that they would update the book with post-Katrina information, and I do wish that they would tell more about the younger, up and coming brass bands that are playing all over New Orleans. ... Read more

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for non-electronic cornets, French horns, trombones, trumpets, tubas, and other brass wind musical instruments across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as "regions"). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of "economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this "economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-a-vis others. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Product Description
This econometric study covers the world outlook for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for accordions, bagpipes, harmonicas, and other non-electronic musical instruments excluding percussion, string and fretted, brass wind, and woodwind musical instruments. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business. ... Read more
