This book was amazing.I suffered Tramatic Brain injury 01 Jan 09 in a very similar incident as the author. This book helped me greatly.Things he described I went through myself. And to hear it from him helped.Thank you
Mr Sweeney for a thoughtfulhelpful explanation of what we go through.I had family members read this book and also thouht highly pf it

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
The story was so well written, it was amazing to read about TBI from a TBI survivor's viewpoint. The hardships he faced were unimaginable, and it really makes you grateful for everything you are capable of doing in your life. I really recommend this book to anyone that likes (or even does not like) autobiographies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Every 21 Seconds
My brother has a brain injury from a truck accident four years ago.I really learned what my brother is going through. My brother has trouble getting feeling and thoughts together and verbalized. To read what the author thought, felt and dealt with was very interesting to me.I give him the utmost respect for getting his experience on paper for me to read. I am looking forward to my sister reading this book. It's an experience that we may never have understood until now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enter the World of a Traumatic Brain Injury Survivor
I bought this book because I have a brother with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and I hoped that it would contribute some insight into his world. I have read several other books on traumatic brain injuries, all written by specialists in the field, so I assumed that I had a relatively good perspective of what it is like to live with a TBI. I couldn't have been more wrong - this book really opened my eyes!

The book is authored by a TBI survivor, and from the very first page I was drawn into his world. It reads like a well-written novel, spread over a 10-year period. The book covers his revovery from injury, rehabilitation, adjustment to his TBI deficits, and the discrimination he encountered at his workplace (UPS). Most importantly, we see the world from the perspective of a TBI survivor. Mr. Sweeney tells his story in a straight-forward manner and allows us to experience the up-and-downs of his recovery and struggle to return to his former self and life. It is an emotional roller-coaster of a ride, told with humor and gut-wrenching honesty.

If you know a survivor of a traumatic brain injury, or if you just want to read a great story, then get this book. I can't wait for the movie. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite the importance of the problem, strikingly little has been written about effective approaches to the treatment of individuals with mild to moderate brain injury. This book is designed for neuropsychologists, counseling and rehabilitation psychologists, and other rehabilitation professionals who work with individuals who have sustained brain injuries of mild to moderate severity. It provides a context for understanding and evaluating the common consequences of such injuries and offers both evaluating the common consequences of such injuries and offers both theoretical perspectives and practical suggestions for helping individuals to adjust to and compensate for residual difficulties.Early chapters focus on different domains of cognitive functioning, while later chapters describe clinical approaches to helping clients manage common emotional reactions such as depression, irritability, and anxiety. While the book acknowledges and discusses the controversy about the origins of persistent symptoms following mild brain injures, it does not focus on the controversy.Rather, it adopts a "what works" approach to dealing with individuals who have persistent symptoms and perceptions that contribute to disability and to emotional distress. Many of these individuals benefit significantly from neuropsychological intervention.Case examples throughout the book illustrate the adaptation of cognitive, cognitive-behavioral, and traditional psychotherapeutic approaches to individuals with mild to moderate brain injury.Self-regulation and self-management of both cognitive failures and emotional responses are described as appropriate and effective in this population. ... Product Description

In 2005, when the first edition of this book was published, traumatic brain injury (TBI) was a phrase and a diagnosis known primarily to the medical profession. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have changed that, for as wounded warriors have returned from the battlefront, TBI has been identified as the “signature injury” of those wars. This new edition of Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the explosion of research and expanded clinical data amassed in the intervening years. Each chapter was written and reviewed by the foremost authorities in neuropsychiatry, neurology, rehabilitation medicine, and the other specialties who assess, diagnose, and contribute to the care of these patients.

The revisions and additions to this comprehensive volume were made to ensure that the scope and coverage is both up-to-date and down-to-earth. Key features include:

    • New chapters on epidemiology in civilian and military populations, neuropathology, genetic Factors, and traumatic brain injury in the context of war, which reflect recent advances in assessment and treatment; • A new chapter on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which emphasizes the common co-occurrence of TBI and PTSD; • Much more detailed coverage of psychiatric issues than can be found in other books on the subject, a knowledge base that helps clinicians maintain the standard of care; • Information on the legal ramifications of this diagnosis so that clinicians will better understand the complicated legal, financial, and insurance-based struggles their patients who have sustained TBI may face; • Chapters that are complete, readable, and relevant in themselves, reflecting the editors' understanding that few readers digest a work of this magnitude in a single sitting. In addition, each concludes with essential points and key references to focus attention and consolidate learning; and • A Foreword written by Bob Woodruff (the ABC World News correspondent who sustained a TBI while covering the war in Iraq) and his wife, underscoring that although this volume is intended to be read primarily by professionals, patients and families may also find it of keen interest.
The book has been closely edited to achieve a level of writing that is consistent and engaging and that addresses the needs of all medical professionals who care for these patients, including the full range of mental health professionals.Evidence-based, academically rigorous, and conceptually sound, this new edition of Textbook of Traumatic Brain Injury represents a huge step forward for the diagnosis and treatment of TBI.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brain surgery - frightful and delightful
My adult son had surgery for a subdural hematoma 3 years ago, so I wanted to know more about brain surgery. I read fiction mostly, but my venture into nonfiction was so rewarding because of this doctor's insightful recollection of his training and experiences.I will read all of his books because this was a fascinating look at the scariest of all surgeries. It reads almost like a novel, and I could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Insights Aspiring Doctors
I am an undergraduate student going on to med school in a few years. This was a fascinating look at the realities and responsibilities you face upon going into medicine. The blurred marathon days in the hospital as an intern and later as a resident are vivid, and Vertosick communicates a mix of hazy exhilaration and plain weirdness that I imagine accompanies them. He describes his own progression from nervousness to confidence to cynicism and back, and takes us along with him. Funny, gripping and thought-provoking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well, he is a Brain Surgeon after all.
I found this book to be brilliantly written with a very human and compassionate style that shows you the internal conflict that a person of conscience, which Dr. Vertosick clearly is, must go through to provide the cool and rock solid professionalism needed to apply steel to gray matter while still being able to empathize with the human being in their charge.

Having had loved ones in the care of the Neurosurgical Service, I have experienced first hand the gut wrenching problems and decisions which are face on a daily basis attempting to care for a patient that has had the misfortune of a defect occuring within the confines of the skull. How anyone can survive on this service is a testiment to their conviction as a healer. Bad outcomes occur, even with the greatest of talent and the seamingly most favorable of odds. Dr. Vertosick shows that even the most steeled veterins lose a small piece of themselves when things don't work out, whether they realize it or not. It is a look behind the mask, behind the veil, not only for the patient or family, but I think also for the physician who may have lost themselves in the process of learning their profession.

One passage that is well worth the price of the entire book is Dr. Vertosick's discussion of cancer and what it actually is. It is possibly the clearest and most sober discussions on the subject I have ever read or heard and I feel that it has given me an insight into it that can bring peace as opposed to fear or anger.

While this book has been difficult for me to read due to the personal feelings and experiences it has caused me to relive, I have found it a worthwhile rollercoaster; one that helps me to put into perspective some dark times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book shared with friends.
I heard this author discussing his book one day on Quinn and Rose's morning show, and I was intrigued.I've been in the health care field for a long time, and I enjoy reading and learning more about medicine. After I read this book,I passed it along to a friend, and she passed it to her daughter, who had had brain surgery about a year ago. They both enjoyed it very much. This physician/author lives in the Pittsburgh area, and so do my friends and I so maybe we enjoyed it more knowing that about him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Admiration for the man and his brain: well done Dr. Vertosick!
Dr. Vertosick provides a very lively and personal account of his neurosurgery career. He has a very good sense of humour, while trying to correct some TV-induced wrong assumptions about the medical field he doesn't hesitate to talk about how he received some little but critical help from a patient who watched some medical TV series :)

He describes his transition from being a very young student of medicine, to becoming an assistant at the world's best neurosurgery department, and finally to becoming an expert neurosurgeon under the supervision of another very disciplined and famous expert doctor. While doing that he helps the reader see the intricacies and beauty of that small, fatty, bloody tissue which makes us what we are: the brain.

After all the difficult cases he describes I truly believe that one has to be really crazy to become a neurosurgeon and operate on brain, or really love that field of study (maybe both). Dr. Vertosick made me realize once again what a miraculous thing that brain of ours is.

As a book of popular science I can compare the quality and smoothness of narration to one of my favorite authors, Oliver Sacks.

PS: It was nice to see the name of a Turkish neurosurgeon Prof. Dr. Gazi Yasargil in the book, too. ... Read more

Product Description
The telephone call every parent dreads... a near fatal automobile accident... and a family changed forever. Given only a one-in-a-hundred chance of survival, the victim beats the odds. Her visible injuries dissipate one by one, but she and her family must deal with a much more serious problem that can't be seen... a traumatic brain injury.

SMILE AND JUMP HIGH! is the moving account of how one young woman and her family struggle through the 'hidden tunnel of darkness' for more than four years. Their journey begins with re-learning basic physical tasks of life such as holding a fork and using a toothbrush; taking a shower and eating; and subsequently walking and talking. These prove to be easy compared with what comes next, however. They must still deal with residual brain deficits that affect her perception, reasoning, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and volatile behavior.

The book is an emotional ride through the minds of family members and the victim using personal journals and a diary. It follows them on a sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious roller coaster ride from hope to despair, frustration to elation, finally ending in triumph. It also demonstrates the value of perseverance and love.

This is a story worth telling because it inspires hope and comfort for brain injury victims and their families. It's also a warning to every parent, teen, and young adult about making bad choices. The entire scenario was preventable... automobiles, alcohol and fatigue don't mix! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Don Lloyd does a great job of bringing you into the journey his family endures while dealing with Shannon's accident and recovery. As someone who watched her best friend go through a similar injury, I found this book hitting close to home.

Reading Don's words and thoughts took me back to the raw emotions I felt years ago, but gaining the different perspective a parent has.I admired Don and Sue's bravery as they let Shannon live on her own in Atlanta after the accident, and wondered if I would have had the courage to do that with my own child.

I think that Don, Sue, Brian, Kelley and Shannon are all lucky to have had each other during such a trying time. Tragedies such as this can pull a family apart but they fused together and helped heal Shannon as a unit.

Thank you Don and Shannon for allowing this window into your life to be open to others.God Bless you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Success is Possible
This book proves that a person can do more than the doctors say he/she can; he can recover more fully, can have a better chance at a good, active, social life, and can eventually become independent, even if only in a few ways. Again, this is a book of hope for those of us who love and care for family members who are recovering from traumatic brain injuries. There will be a greater need for this type of book in the future as there are tremendous numbers of TBI's coming back from the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. My son is one of those survivors, with the "unseen injury".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for craniotomy patients and their caretakers
Lots of valuable and good advice and resources for both craniotomy patients and caretakers. But the portrayal of NYC and its boroughs is incomplete and unfair (p. 179 of the softcover.) I had brain surgery in 2005 and I live in NJ and volunteer in NYC. I find the people there compassionate, thoughtful and considerate. That's 99.99% of them. They help me on the subway, across the street and do countless other nice things! Also, it's 2006 and Donald treats his wife, Sue, like chattel. He's very patronizing. I know what Sue had to do to make Donald and Shannon comfortable. She cooked, cleaned and did everything that a hard working Aide does. And believe me it's more work and more intense for a brain injured person.

Donald goes through great pains and lots of analysis to explain the people, places, etc. that Shannon encounters. But on these matters it's a big miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone having to come to grips with recovering
Smile And Jump High!: The True Story Of Overcoming A Traumatic Brain Injury is the moving and compelling testimony of Shannon, a young woman who suffered a near-fatal auto accident. A devastating brain injury forces Shannon to embark on a grueling four-year journey of gradually re-learning simple physical skills, walking, talking, and coping with residual effects that drastically impair her problem-solving ability, behavioral temperament, and more. The inclusion of citations from personal journals of close friends and family members bear testimony to a long struggle culminating in triumph and rebuilding one's life from the ground up. Smile And Jump High is very highly recommended reading, especially for anyone having to come to grips with the recovering process necessitated by catastrophic injury or illness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sports Neuropsychology- A review from the perspective of a biomedical engineering student and athlete
Review Intentions

My review is intended to give potential readers guidance as to what they might gain from reading this book. There are many different professions that can benefit from the information provided, although the compiling author had clinical neuropsychologists and psychologists in mind.I encourage anyone interested in sports, medicine, and sports related injuries to read some, or all, of this book, but note, not everyone will enjoy it due to the background knowledge necessary for understanding.

Style and Prose Critique

For the most part, the book is written in a conversational tone, which allowed me to get through some of the more technical sections with ease. The book is structured much like a review article, meaning it contains information from a broad range of studies and authors, mainly focusing on mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI) and concussions. I liked the use of various authors to write about different aspects a neuropsychologist might face when entering the realm of sports neuropsychology.

Content Discussion

The book is broken down into five main parts, each of which is broken down into chapters with more specific examples and explanations. The first part gives a basic history of sports in which head injuries historically appear. It also explains the need for study and management of sports related concussions. The author gives an objective view of pros and cons working with athletes and athletic teams. In this section, he encourages each neuropsychologist to carefully examine his or her motives for pursuing this specific field. As a whole, this part is interesting and gives a good background for the rest of the book; however, much of the historical information is not pertinent to current applications and might seem useless to some readers.

The second part of the book is by far the most technical. The intended reader should have no difficulty understanding the basic physiological and scientific information presented. This section tackles the difficult issue of defining what constitutes a concussion, the epidemiology of concussions, and clinically applying this knowledge in the sports arena. What I like best about this section is the author's use of sports jargon. For example, William B. Barr writes, "The terms `having one's bell rung' or receiving a `ding' are sports expressions used to describe when an athlete has received a relatively severe blow to the head" (Echemendía, p. 89). I've heard these terms used all my life playing football and rugby, and not once have I stopped and thought how we can dismiss what is potentially a serious brain injury with something as simple as a colloquial phrase. Some of the more important questions raised in this section are the cause and effect, both short and long-term, of MTBI on kids as well as adults. Some studies provide evidence to answer these questions, but for the most part, the scientific and medical communities know little about how concussions are caused (traditional versus rotational forces), and the effects of concussions. Evidence has shown that there are lower concussive thresholds for successive impacts, and that second-impact syndrome could have devastating consequences later in life ranging from cognitive impairment to even Alzheimer's. This section also provides the reader with information on how to assess MTBI on the "sideline," and what the guidelines for "return-to-play" should be.

The third part of the book aims to aid the neuropsychologist in starting and maintaining MTBI testing programs including elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and professional level athletes. I like the idea that these testing programs can be implemented in schools to educate and involve a majority of young athletes and parents that may not know anything about MTBI and the risks to which young athletes are exposed. I think more than just neuropsychologists can benefit from reading this section. For these programs to be initiated, public officials need to be convinced of the dangers of MTBI before any of them agree to spend money on a comprehensive and potentially expensive program. The author might have added advice as to presenting this information to those that might not fully grasp the physiological and developmental importance of the brain and its functions. Unfortunately, I think navigating the political or social community is a necessary evil in which the average neuropsychologist will have little to no experience.

The fourth section is specific to computerized neuropsychological test batteries. As a non-neuropsychologist I found this section to be the least useful or informative to me. Multiple tests are given including the ImPACT Neuropsychological Test Battery, the HeadMinder Concussion Resolution Index, CogSport, and Sports Concussion Applications of the Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics Sports Medicine Battery. These all have slightly different criteria for assessing cognitive impairment, but what I took from the section is that computerized technology is a method for making neuropsychological testing quicker and cheaper which in turn will allow it to be used in a much more extensive manner when compare to traditional handwritten neuropsychological tests. This section is really only useful if the reader intends to implement some sort of computer based testing.

The fifth and final section gives the reader different perspectives when assessing, treating, and monitoring sports MTBI. Throughout the book, but especially here, the author(s) state the importance of collaboration when dealing with MTBI. Certified athletic trainers, team physicians, coaches, players (and parents), and neuropsychologists all must work together when either assessing or treating MTBI. The main goal is to prevent further injury to the player, while not being overly cautious so as to prevent the player from achieving necessary goals.
Final Statements

I think this book does a good job explaining many aspects of sports MTBI. For those interested in medicine as well as sports, I highly recommend reading and understanding the facts behind why some of your favorite sports players might not be allowed to play for extended periods of time from one little hit in a game. The implications for fantasy football could be enormous.

Product Description
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) in sports has become an important international public health issue over the past two decades. However, until recently, return to play decisions following a sports-related traumatic brain injury have been based on anecdotal evidence and have not been based on scientifically validated clinical protocols. Over the past decade, the field of Neuropsychology has become an increasingly important component of the return to play decision making process following TBI. Neuropsychological assessment instruments are increasingly being adapted for use with athletes throughout the world and the field of sports neuropsychology appears to be a rapidly evolving subspecialty.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the application of neuropsychological assessment instruments in sports, and it is structured to present a global perspective on contemporary research. In addition to a review of current research, Traumatic Brain Injury in Sports: An International Neuropsychological Perspective, presents a thorough review of current clinical models that are being implemented internationally within American and Australian rules football, soccer, boxing, ice hockey, rugby and equestrian sports. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars provide this book to every school
I am starting to get involved in offering neuropsychological rehabilitation for children after brain injury here at the Oliver Zangwill Centre in Ely, England. It was such a relief to discover this book has been written and that it is of consistently good quality throughout.I think that it should be sent to the school of any child who returns to school after brain injury, and that the teachers are given time to read it.At this stage, where I'm new to this aspect of brain injury rehab, I think it covers all the main topics.Seems like good value as well!
