The purpose of the text is to teach about law by focusing on contemporary legal systems within the framework of each culture. The text emphasizes the legal process in each of the four traditions by concentrating on the specific problems of inheritance, as an example of the definition of and response to crime; contracts as an example of economic decision making; and population planning as an example of personal rights and the allocation of power between judicial, bureaucratic, and religious institutions. For use in undergraduate anthropology courses as well as in advanced anthropology or comparative law courses. ... Read more

Product Description
With the increasing recognition of the limitations of conventional development efforts, many development practitioners have shifted their view of development from a primarily economic and growth-centred approach to a more people-centred approach, where the emphasis is on people taking ownership of the developmental process. This shift has triggered the proliferation of development discourses that incorporate complex concepts such as empowerment, participation, capacity-building and self-reliance. This research deals with the concept of self-reliance, and how different stakeholders within the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Management Trust perceive the degree of self-reliance achieved by the Trust. The findings of this research draw attention to the importance of self-reliance to people-centred approaches to development. Development through dependence on outside agents is the predominant model for development through tourism in the Okavango Delta where the Trust operates. The value that increased self-reliance has for community-based eco-tourism initiatives such as the STMT is discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
This book brings together the 3 traditions of African, Land and Liberation contextual theologies. It attempts to show how the acquisition of land was influenced by ethnic/racial power relations in pre and post independence Botswana. The study uses data collected through questionnaire, interviews and participant observation to show Basarwa/San socio-economic, religious and cultural perceptions of the land, and how its lose impacts negatively on their lives by re-reading Psalm, 137: 1-4. Here, 2 things are done specifically: Looking at the socio-economic and history of Judah, contextualise this to the Basarwa setting of "homelessness" and appropriate the God of liberation in their struggle for recognition. It recognizes the relationship between landlessness and oppression in that since the coming of dominant cattle ranchers, indigenous, nomadic hunting and gathering Basarwa have been losing the land and veldt products, through policies such as Tribal Grazing Land Policy and New Policy on Agricultural Development, which gave exclusive rights of the land to the former. The study found that Basarwa material culture and religious artefacts have been adversely affected in this process.. ... Read more

Product Description
Despite the efforts of the government, Botswana continues to face one of the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence rates. The common approaches to address HIV prevalence based on medical and behaviour models have not been effective. Particularly in rural areas, people avoid facing the reality of HIV/AIDS due to fear and stigma. In this project, the linkage between HIV/AIDS and social, economic and cultural factors is explored in rural areas of northern Botswana, where marginalized minority groups, particularly the San, live in extreme poverty. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus groups in 2004. The analysis indicates that poverty, gender inequality, traditional beliefs related to illness and healing, marginalization, and stigma interact and create key barriers to current HIV prevention strategies. Recommendations based on my research and fieldwork indicate that HIV/AIDS prevention program must address poverty, gender equality, complexity of cultures, marginalization and stigma reduction at all levels. This book should be useful to policy analysts and development workers in the HIV/AIDS field, especially those studying and working with minority groups. ... Read more

Product Description
The story of two women--one a hunter-gatherer in Botswana, the other an ailing American anthropologist--this powerful book returns the reader to territory that Marjorie Shostak wrote of so poignantly in the now classic Nisa: The Life and Words of a !Kung Woman. Here, however, the ground has perceptibly shifted. First published in 1981, Nisa served as a stirring introduction to anthropology's most basic question: Can there be true understanding between people of profoundly different cultures?Diagnosed with breast cancer, and troubled by a sense of work yet unfinished, Shostak returned to Botswana in 1989. This book tells simply and directly of her rediscovery of the !Kung people she had come to know years before--the aging, blunt, demanding Nisa, her stalwart husband Bo, understanding Kxoma, fragile Hwantla, and Royal, translator and guide. In Shostak's words, we clearly see !Kung life, the dry grasslands, the healing dances, the threatening military presence. And we see Shostak herself, passionately curious, reporting the discomforts and confusion of fieldwork along with its fascination. By turns amused and frustrated, she describes the disappointments--and chastening lessons--that inevitably follow when anthropologists (like her younger self) romanticize the !Kung.Throughout, we observe a woman of threatened health but enormous vitality as she pursues the promise she once discovered in the !Kung people and, above all, in Nisa. At the core of the book is the remarkable relationship between these two women from different worlds. They are often caught off guard by the limits of their mutual understanding. Still, their determination to reach out to each other lingers in the reader's mind long after the story ends--providing an eloquent response to questions that Nisa so memorably posed."It was not that we had become the best of friends or like close family. It was simply that she and I had the most straightforward connection I had ever had with anyone, before or since. It was as if the !Kung culture and my talks with Nisa touched something beyond reason in me.Even though I didn't necessarily like everything Nisa said, nor everything about her, my heart had been captured. But how often I wished Nisa had been more noble, more selfless, and more philosophical.Nisa had to be known well to be appreciated, for she was complex and difficult. She probably would say much the same about me.We both wanted things from each other, and neither of us got as much as we hoped for. That we both got some of what we wanted-well, thatmade our friendship extremely valuable." -from the Epilogue ... As a survivor of breast cancer, it was amazing to read this book.Just as amazing is the story of how it was written--the ultimate act of courage by the author. It is a book about friendship, Africa, breast cancer, and womankind.

Product Description

A companion volume to the art exhibition centering on Thami Mnyele, the late artist and member of the Medu Art Ensemble—an antiapartheid arts organization in Gaborone, Botswana, which disbanded after a violent raid of their headquarters in 1985 that killed Mnyele—this volume pays tribute to his art, notes his contributions to the graphics unit of Medu, and presents archival material about Medu itself. More than a simple catalog, this magnificently designed book is arranged in 10 sections, mirroring the different operating units of Medu. An extensive chapter illustrating the screen-printed political posters—some of which are now iconic images of the anti-apartheid movemet—is contextualized with snapshots of Mnyele and George Metz creating the works in Medu’s makeshift silk-screen studio under a tree in the fierce African heat.

The incredible story of a 3,000 mile bicycle trek across the world's largest stretch of sand--the Kalahari and Namib Deserts of Southern Africa. The author relates his fantastic experiences--stalked by lions, charged by a herd of elephants, and his encounters with poisonous snakes, to name a few. He also tells of his numerous observations and experiences in living and teaching in Botswana for three years. These include his marriage to the daughter of a local witch-doctor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting tale of Africa
The author provides an unusual view into Africa. He is a teacher and a bicyclist, in that order. I enjoyed what he had to show me about the inner workings of two cultures intersecting (Western and African), and learning with him as he grew during his stay. This is not the most enthralling of books, with a few sections that were a bit tedious, but is still a moderately recommended read. When you're tired of frothy page-turners, if you feel like a personal history, or reading about teaching kids in Africa, or a personal bicycle tale the book will satisfy. Slower-paced, well enough told.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "true" adventure.
Across African Sand is a an excellent example of what true adventure books should be. I emphasize the word "true" not simply to point out that events in the book are factual but to distinguish this work from books describing stunts. (To me a stunt is a once-in-a-lifetime event, filled with harum-scarum that a more skilled traveler would have avoided and usually detailing a significant departure from the main stream of the writer's life.) By contrast, Across African Sand comes across as the logical continuation of Phil Deutschle's career as a teacher and introspective traveler. Prior to embarking on his solo bicycle ride across the Kalahari and Namib deserts, Deutschle has spent three years living and teaching in an out-of-the way village in Botswana. An accomplished linguist, he has become fluent-to-conversant with several local languages, including that of the !Kung (Bushman) people, and thus we learn more of African life and thought than we would at the mercy of a more casual traveler. Deutschle clearly enjoys the company of the various people he falls in with along the way but also relishes the solitude which is such a significant part of his journey. Part of the success of the book is its skillful interweaving of events in the course of his cycling trek with flashbacks to his life as a teacher in a traditional Botswana village. Dimi Press has done a creditable job of putting the book together and its illustrations are great. I wholeheartedly recommend this as an interesting and insightful story of travel and adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for bicycling enthuaists.
Across African Sand: Journey Of A Witch Doctor's Son-In-Law is the true life adventure story of Phil Deutschle's bicycle trip across 3,000 miles of African landscape. Along the way Phil was stalked by lions, charged by aherd of enraged elephants, fell in love with (and married) the daughter ofa prominent witch doctor. Across African Sand is a compelling, engaging, fascinating biographical travelogue that relates an account of Phil's fiveyears in Botswana (southern Africa) told in the form of flashbacks while hebicycles over the harsh Kalahari and Namib deserts, negotiating difficultAfrican terrain, including soft sand and mud, during the course of histhree month cycling adventure. Across African Sand is highly recommendedfor bicycling enthusiasts, armchair adventurers, and anyone who has everyearned to travel the world, meet new people, and have adventures of theirown!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, exciting reading!
This portrait will also fit neatly in travel sections: itportrays a bicyclist's journey across two deserts as he bikes throughsand, dodging lions and elephants and visiting remote parts of outback Africa. The adventure and observations of life in Botswana make for an excellent and exciting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Advernture forArmchair Reader
I bought this book for my husband. While he was reading it he kept interrupting my reading to tell me about what was happening in his book. In self defense, I picked it up assoon as he finished and immediately foundmyself transported to Africa. This book is much more than the story of theauthor's trip across the Kalahri on a bicycle. He writes about the peoplehe meets and tells of their culture, the politics and economy of eachgroup. He possesses interpersonal skills that allow him to relate to allsorts of people quickly and he writes about them with affection andrespect. He describes plant and animal life along the way. Throughflashbacks he tells of his earlier life and recent experience as a teacherin Africa. During the lonely stretches of his trip he wonders about hisneed to wander the globe. My husband said when he finished the book,"I've learned more about Africa from this book than all of the otherbooks on the subject, put together" I agree, and I learned a greatdeal about life in general and men in particular from it. ... Product Description
This book presents the socio-environmental history of black people around Kuruman, on the edge of the Kalahari in South Africa.Considering successive periods--Tswana agropastoral chiefdoms before colonial contact, the Cape frontier, British colonial rule, Apartheid, and the homeland of Bophuthatswana in the 1980s--Environment, Power and Injustice shows how the human relationship with the environment corresponded to differences of class, gender, and race. While exploring biological, geological, and climatological forces in history, this book argues that the challenges of existence in a semidesert arose more from human injustice than from deficiencies in the natural environment. In fact, powerful people drew strength from and exercised their power over others through the environment. At the same time, the natural world provided marginal peoples with some relief from human injustice. Nancy J. Jacobs is Assistant Professor in the Department of Africana Studies and the Department of History at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.She is a recipient of the Alice Hamilton article prize from the American Society for Environmental History. ... THE NAVY AND ITS WORK

To the Navy that alone has made this campaign possible, we soldiers owe our grateful thanks. But there have been times when, in our blindness, we have failed to realise how great the task was to blockade 400 miles of this coast and to keep a watchful eye on Mozambique. For before the Portuguese made common cause with us, there was a great deal of gun-running along the southern border of German East Africa, which our present Allies found impossible to watch. Two factors materially aided the Germans in making the fight they have. First, there was the lucky "coincidence" of the Dar-es-Salaam Exhibition. This exhibition, which was to bring the whole world to German East Africa in August, 1914, provided the military authorities with great supplies of machinery, stores and exhibits from all the big industrial centres; and these were swiftly adapted to the making of rifles and munitions of war. To this must be added the most important factor of all, the _Königsberg_, lying on the mud flats far up the Rufigi, destroyed by us, it is true, but not before the ship's company of 700, officers and men, and most of the guns had been transported ashore, the latter mounted on gun carriages and dragged by weary oxen or thousands of black porters to dispute our advance. In due course, however, these were abandoned, one by one, as we pressed the enemy back from the Northern Railway south to the Rufigi. ... Read more
