Product Description

Assimilation’s Agent reveals the life and opinions of Edwin L. Chalcraft (1855–1943), a superintendent in the federal Indian boarding schools during the critical period of forced assimilation in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Chalcraft was hired by the Office of Indian Affairs (now known as the Bureau of Indian Affairs) in 1883. During his nearly four decades of service, he worked at a number of Indian boarding schools and agencies, including the Chehalis Indian School in Oakville, Washington; Puyallup Indian School in Tacoma, Washington; Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon; Wind River Indian School in Wind River, Wyoming; Jones Male Academy in Hartshorne, Oklahoma; and Siletz Indian Agency in Oregon.

In this memoir Chalcraft discusses the Grant peace policy, the inspection system, allotment, the treatment of tuberculosis, corporal punishment, alcoholism, and patronage. Extensive coverage is also given to the Indian Shaker Church and the government’s response to this perceived threat to assimilation. Assimilation’s Agent illuminates the sometimes treacherous political maneuverings and difficult decisions faced by government officials at Indian boarding schools. It offers a rarely heard and today controversial "top-down" view of government policies to educate and assimilate Indians.

Drawing on a large collection of unpublished letters and documents, Cary C. Collins’s introduction and notes furnish important historical background and context. Assimilation’s Agent illustrates the government's long-term program for dealing with Native peoples and the shortcomings of its approach during one of the most consequential eras in the long and often troubled history of American Indian and white relations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, and dumb
I found this book in the MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY in 2 minutes because I was in a rush. I didn't even read what it was about and I just took it. BIG MISTAKE! I thought it was very childish with all of its sill wizard dumbness. It seems like a book that a parent would would read to there kindergartener, it should not be in a middle school library. Its sentences weren't good and there was nothing interesting in it. I would definitely not recommend for anybody 9 and older. But, if your a parent then maybe you might want to read it to your YOUNG child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
At my school we have a time to read in english.
I picked this book by acident. I was running late, and needed a book. I was very lucky to pick this book.
Lydia Rice is a girl who goes to a boarding school, and hates it! She Walked around the school at night and ran into the night watchman who is alsois the maintance man and a silly wizard. Lydia wants to become a silly wizard so Howie(Silly wizard)sets a task. Find outn who the girls in the mural are an what ABCDE WHEEL stabds for.
This is a great book. 1,000 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Page Turner
I tutor grade schoolers and my soon-to-be 6th grader picked this book to read over the summer. It was such a great book.Perfect for a pre-teen who wants to move beyond Harry Potter and challenging enough to feel accomplished after reading it.I was surprised at the level of vocabulary used by the author. My student had to work at some of the words but this was good for vocabulary growth.Ms. Gordon develops her characters really well. There were quite a few names which required my student to make a flow-chart in order to make the connections but this was excellent practice for harder novels. My student loved the Silly Wizard story that permeates the book plus she loved the challenge of decoding the mystery of the mural at the boarding school.I loved that it was a nice clean book that had adult ideas (divorce, social relationships, etc.) but it didn't cross any lines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
I have always loved books about boarding school, but this one was maybe the best. It's incredibly fun figuring out Lydia's code, deciphering ABCDE WHEEL, and even giggling at her Mad Prawler narration. 3 thumbs up! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Try Ballet Friends instead
This RBSD book is blah. Head over to Ballet Friends, a new series all about ballet, friendship, and fun! And lots of cute boys! The first book is called Ballet Friends: Get to the Point! and the second book is called Ballet Friends 2: The Rise of Beezilla. I got em both and I can't stop reading them. If you like fun books and ballet, then Ballet Friends is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful lesson mixed with a great ballet story
Ellie and her friends have returned to The Royal Ballet Lower School for their second term. When they come back, they are surprised to find a new girl, Isabelle Armand, who is French and is mean to everyone, including the teachers. In Ellis's usual fashion, she is determined to understand why Isabelle is so mean and try to be friends with her. Meanwhile, Ellie continues to work hard at becoming a great ballerina. This is a must read for any fan of The R.B.S. Diaries. Anyone else that is interested should read the first two; although it isn't necessary, it will make the story more pleasurable. As I stated in my reviews of the previous books, the only negative comment I can make, is that it can sometimes sound like an advertisement of the R.B.S., which is fine, but can be annoying at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Isabelle the MEANIE turns to Isabelle the NICE!!
Reporter's Opinion: I think that this is a wonderful book. It is the third in the Royal Ballet School Diaries series. You should read the first two books before reading this one, so you get to know the people and their personalities.

Summary: When the girls come back from the Christmas break, they notice another bed in their dorm. They soon find out that a girl named Isabelle is coming to the Royal Ballet School. When Isabelle comes in, she is very rude to everyone. A couple of weeks later, Ellie finds out that Isabelle's parents are divorced and that she lives with her Mom. Isabelle is not being nice because she doesn't think that she needs friends. That is because Isabelle's Mom cannot decide where she wants to live and Isabelle had to keep moving and changing schools. In the end, Isabelle and the rest of the dorm are good friends!!
My favorite part was when they were playing truth or dare and they dared Lara to send Oliver Stafford (the most annoying boy who is a real pain and is stuck-up about himself) a Valentine's Day card. I liked that part because it was really funny. When Lara wrote a note on the card, she wrote it in French. It said: "Oliver, je t'adore, mon petit chou!" It really means, "Oliver, I love you, my little cabbage.

Excerpt: Institut Le Rosey -Le Rosey's philosophy is inspired by what Harvard educationalist Howard Gardner has called "multiple intelligences": "its aim is to develop all Roseans talents through academic, sporting and artistic programmes." The school offers a demanding bilingual and bicultural education with the language of instruction being French or English depending on the student's academic program; however, students may take up to four language classes while at Le Rosey. Students may sit either the International Baccalaureate, the most widely recognized pre-university educational program, or the Francophone-oriented French Baccalaureate. To sustain an international atmosphere at Le Rosey, there exists a quota where no more than 10% of the students may come from a single country. The student body, ages 7 through 18, is composed of pupils from approximately 58 different countries, with 60% of the students being European. The school's current enrollment, over 400 pupils, is equally divided male/female. The majority of students are between the ages of 14 and 18. The Student-teacher ratio is 5:1 with the average class size being less than 10 students, and the average teacher's length of stay at Le Rosey is over ten years. Students at Le Rosey are nicknamed "Roséens" (in French) or "Roseans" (in English), and former students are labeled "Les Anciens Roséens". Product Description
Jenny Linsky, the famous little black cat of Greenwich Village, has never been to school before. When her master, Captain Tinker, sends her to a boarding school in the country to learn the special knowledge of cats — manners and cooperation — she is afraid, among strangers, and so far from home. As soon as she's settled in, taking off the red scarf that makes her feel brave, another student named Pickles, the Fire Cat, is up to his usual mischief, and chases her with his fire truck hook and ladder. She is terrified and runs away. Walking along the railroad tracks, Jenny catches the smell of the city: "You can have the daisies. Give me the sidewalks of New York."

Jenny soon realizes that the Captain would be disappointed if he found out she had left school. It’s then that Jenny decides to stand up to Pickles. She returns bravely and when Pickles next tries his tricks, he's surprised at the "new" Jenny. Pickles learns his manners and Jenny learns that not only can school be fun, but the friendships she makes there will last forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love these stories
I was given The Fire Cat book in grade school and absolutely loved it and Pickles. I was then very excited to learn that there were more Cat Club books in my school's library. I read them over and over again.I have recently rediscovered them and more!I never knew there were so many and am looking forward to reading them all. When I told me husband the concept of the stories he asked if they were all inscribed to me. :) They are just my thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Jenny!!!
My daughter (5) and I love Jenny. We have all the Jenny Linsky books except Moonlight Adventure. This book has Jenny meeting Pickles the Fire Cat before he had completely mended his ways(Pickles is the hero of The Fire Cat that is great for cat-loving boys and girls.) Jenny teaches him a thing or two by the end and they end up being best friends.

The price is a bit steep for the length of the book, but there are some cute illustrations that make up for the lack of length.

5-0 out of 5 stars The School For Cats
My husband and I just love these Jenny Linsky stories, and we have no kids!We had never heard of Jenny Linsky until my husband brought home a very badly beaten up copy of it from the dump of all places. We are now HUGE fans and plan on collecting all of Jenny's charming stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories by a great author
We are purchasing this series one at a time for our daughter, who is also named Jenny. She is eating them up!The stories are simple and sweet, but include lots of old-fashioned adventure, just perfect for young kids.We own several titles now and I have not been disappointed by any of them.Charming illustrations and great stories makes for a perfect combination!I recommend this series highly.Probably up to a fourth grade reading level.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 5 year old loves Jenny & her adventures!
I thought this story would be far fetched being that Jenny goes to a "camp."But she actually goes to a kennel and it made more sense to me (talking cats, cat who drives--perfectly normal to me).Nonetheless, the story keeps in balance with the rest of Averill's series. My five year old truly enjoys this series. He loves cats and enjoys the fun adventures Jenny the cat experiences. ... Product Description
This book argues that the roots of the manual labor boarding school for American Indian youth, and the explanation for its development and spread, are to be found in the ideology that gave also birth to the penitentiary. In the early nineteenth century, a new institution was developed for the purpose of educating American Indian youth, the manual labor boarding school. This research seeks to explain the establishment and diffusion of this institution within this historical period. It is the contention of this research that the manual labor boarding school arose within the context of a larger social movement that was represented by an ideological shift regarding the appropriate methods of social control for growing 'problem populations' in the rapidly urbanizing and industrializing America. This ideological shift resulted in the birth of a new type of specialized institution, represented by the penitentiary. Specific cases of mission schools of the early nineteenth century are examined and compared to the model of the penitentiary. This research finds sufficient evidence to support the position that the roots of the manual labor boarding school for American Indian youth and the explanation for its development and spread are to be found in the ideology that gave also birth to the penitentiary. This work will appeal to scholars of socialization and social control, as well as Native American history. ... Read more

I like this book. This book is funfilled and interesting. Chalet School fans would enjoy reading about the trials and tribulations of Gay Lambert and her freinds. This book also introduces Annis Lovell and her difficult relationship with her guardian. I think the plot of this book is good especially for its flow and also its ability to capture and develop characters of different group of individuals in earlier books. It also manages to capture the scenes without having the reader having to read previous book to know who is who. i feel that this boook should be in the 10+ age group mainly because they will develop the individuals mind and character ... For most North Americans, the practice of sending First Nations children to aboriginal boarding schools is a chapter in history that seems best forgotten. But the generations of children who were rounded up and sent to those faraway schools won't ever forget the day-to-day reality of that "chapter." Often taken without warning or time to say goodbye to their families, children as young as five had their hair cropped short and their clothes taken away. Then they were deloused, dressed in uniforms and forbidden to speak their native language or practise their traditional arts, religion or dances. No Time to Say Goodbye is a fictional account of five children sent to aboriginal boarding school, based on the recollections of a number of Tsartlip First Nations people. These unforgettable children are taken by government agents from Tsartlip Day School to live at Kuper Island Residential School. The five are isolated on the small island and life becomes regimented by the strict school routine. They experience the pain of homesickness and confusion while trying to adjust to a world completely different from their own. Their lives are no longer organized by fishing, hunting and family, but by bells, line-ups and chores. In spite of the harsh realities of the residential school, the children find adventure in escape, challenge in competition, and camaraderie with their fellow students.Sometimes sad, sometimes funny, always engrossing, No Time to Say Goodbye is a story that readers of all ages won't soon forget. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars engaging historically accurate stories
This is one of the best stories I have read about the boarding school experience. Since the boarding school experience is told from the perspective of five different children - you get a wider view of the many aspects of what happened there. I would highly recommend it for middle school age children (or perhaps older elementary). It will appeal to children since it is told from a child's perspective and has engaging stories - like when one child plotted and carried out an escape plan. True to history, there are also heartbreaking experiences, although since they are told from a child's perspective they aren't graphic, which is better for the child reader. (But these are important to read yourself if you are an adult and discuss with your children.) This is one of those well-written stories that stays with you forever.
