Product Description
The first comprehensive collection of the calls and songs of these 1430 species - virtually all of the vocal ones in the region, including many species whose recorded sounds have never before been available. Birdcalls are of immense interest both to amateur and professional birds and ornithologists, especially since many birds can only be certainly identified from their call or song. A 150-page booklet is included with the disks, which provides a listing of the calls and recordist credits. ... Read more

It was also included in The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume Two (1973) after being voted one of the best novellas up to 1965. Mario Esteban Rioz and Ted Long are both Scavengers, Mars-born humans who scour space for the spent lower stages of spacecraft. Rioz has been doing the work his whole life, but his partner for his current six-month trip puzzles hima former mining engineer who gave up a comfortable, well-paying desk job in the Martian iron mines for the hardscrabble life of a Scavenger. He doesn't understand Long's philosophical musings on what he calls "the Martian way". Rioz is tense because the trip has been unprofitable. He chews Long out for wasting power listening to some Grounder (Earth-born) politician named John Hilder making a speech. As Rioz listens to the speech, he realizes that Hilder is saying that Earth's settlements on Mars, Venus, and the Moon are useless drains on Earth's economy, and that spaceships are wasting irreplaceable water by using it as reaction mass. A year later, Hilder has used his campaign against "Wasters" to gain power in Earth's Ass...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1369029 ... Read more

Ellen Franck and Marian Abrams are smart, attractive, urban women, with big jobs in the fashion business. They have witnessed their contemporaries following the route of marriage, children, exile to suburbia, and a general loveless, sexless existence. But now Ellen and Marian discover that they both hear the same, terrible noise. It is the ticking of the biological clock. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun Read
Light, fast, fun read with no major trauma. A nice respite from heavier-duty reading. Decent writing and an amusing story, albeit with a predictable ending.

3-0 out of 5 stars Spoilers within
Very satisfying read, a quick one too, and often hard to put down. This story is a mixture of wry humor, psychological insight, and dreams of the best possible outcome ever. Like others have said, the ending was a bit too dreamy, too "perfect." My only criticism is that it actually would have been much more satisfying if the ending had been written differently. I liked that this author opened up the door to accepting single motherhood by choice, but then regretted seeing her almost compulsively throw Ellen into a couple RIGHT before the end of the story. Would have loved to see Ellen stay single but hopeful, to see her joyful at her approaching single motherhood while raising the bar for that special someone who may enter her and her child's lives.

Also, what's with "mammo" -- the little necklace thingy that our heroine creates and which leads her to millionaire status. Isn't "mammo" short for "mammogram"? Why would anyone pay thousands to wear it on a necklace?

1-0 out of 5 stars A truly asinine novel.
"Dating Big Bird" features an annoying protagonist with a fierce desire to have a baby. Undoubtedly, this character would raise any child to be as whiny and useless as she is. Her preoccupation with "the Pickle" and Big Bird border on pathological. After detesting "Animal Husbandry," I shouldn't have expected anything different from this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it...
I love Animal Husbandry. It may be my favorite recent read, and I wanted to love this book. I didn't. I kept wondering why.

I thought perhaps I couldn't relate to the pain of delayed motherhood. I like to think that I'm a good enough reader that a book doesn't have to speak directly to my personal life experience in order to engage me. Even if that were the case, this character actually does what I do for a living and I've never found this in a book before. Wouldn't that engage me at least a bit? It didn't.

I enjoyed the side characters more than the main character. Her work friend was wonderful. Same with the impoholic writer, he rang very true, though the situation was bizarre--and I liked how bizarre that situation was. At least it was interesting. Her descriptions of her niece's very specific behaviors rang true, but did not particularly entertain me.

I guess what was missing, for me, was a sense of the real emotional core of this main character. She was flat, bleached out, kind of lost. I wondered if having a child to fill up this blankness was going to work for her, but sadly, did not particularly care.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dating Oscar the Grouch
Well, that's what my girlfriend says she does. But I read this, at her suggestion, and thought it was pretty funny and well written. Even though I'm not a 30-something single woman with a biological clock ticking away. ... Read more
