Product Description
The conservation of biodiversity is one of the most important issues facing ecologists today. In this update of the highly successful first edition, Malcolm Hunter introduces students and professionals to the fascinating and important field of conservation biology, the applied science dealing with the maintenance of the earth's biological diversity.

Fundamentals of Conservation Biology 2e focuses on what can be done to maintain biodiversity through management of ecosystems and populations. Starting with a succinct look at what conservation and biodiversity really mean and progressing to more complex topics such as mass extinctions, habitat degradation and over exploitation, Hunter creates a context in which the principles of conservation biology can be readily understood. Discussions of the social, political and economic aspects of conservation biology issues are interwoven throughout the text and addressed independently in their own chapters. The new edition has been thoroughly revised with hundreds of new references and web links to many of the organizations involved in conservation biology.

  • Case studies - real world examples give meaning to the concepts that students are learning.
  • Updated pedagogical program - the second edtion includes a glossary of key terms, questions for discussion and links to websites.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach - social, political and economic aspects of conservation biology are integrated throughout the book to give students a broad perspective of the subject.

i bought what I paid for.The back cover was falling off, butit suited my needs so I am fine with that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
I had to get this book for my university's Conservation Biology class, and it has been very helpful for reinforcing the topics and studying for tests. It is very easy to follow and not a hard read. It is a well made text book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for non-biology majors lacking otherwise
There are two glowing reviews of this book but I wanted to offer a different perspective of Fundamentals of Conservation Biology. This is my second round teaching Conservation Biology at the college level.Last year I used Groom's textPrinciples of Conservation Biology, Third Edition but this was too advanced and would make a great graduate-level book. This year I'm using Hunter and Gibbs and my students are finding it lacking. If only I could take the two books and create a book that is an average between the two.Hunter and Gibbs would be ideal for a conservation biology course for non-majors but for students that had ecology and ecology-related courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent student text.
Malcom Hunter provides a wonderful resource for students. He brings years of experience in the academic world to create a useful and enjoyable text. His book provides broad coverage of the major topics of appliedconservation including chapters on diversity, threats to biodiversity, themaintenance of biodiversity, and the human factors of conservation work. Throughout the text Dr. Hunter provides insightful illustrations andexamples carefully spanning taxonomic lines and global location includingseveral in depth case studies. This text accurately depicts the variouscomplications and perspectives in this increasingly broad and necessaryfield. From the introduction through the last chapter Hunter keeps thetext accessible only rarely becoming arduous to the reader's patience. Hunter leaves out the over glorified (and extremely costly) full glossypictures that have become commonplace in modern texts making this a greatbuy for students. The discussion questions provided at the end of eachchapter are great and his suggestions for other readings provide excellentoptions for students seeking to go even further into topics of interest. ... Excerpt:The Fortress of Al-Ukhaidir or Abbasid palace of Ukhaider is located roughly 50 km south of Karbala , Iraq . It is a large, rectangular fortress erected in 775 AD with a unique defensive style. Constructed by the Abbasid caliph's As-Saffah 's nephew Isa ibn Musa , Ukhaidir represents architectural innovation in the structures of its courtyards, residences and mosque. Excavations at Ukhaidir were conducted in the late 19th century by Gertrude Bell. Ukhaider was an important stop on regional trade routes, similar to Atshan and Mujdah . The complex comprises a primary hall, a big Iwan, a reception hall and servants quarters . The fortress exemplifies Abbasid architecture in Iraq by demonstrating the "despotic and the pleasure-loving character of the dynasty" in its grand size but cramped living quarters .World Heritage Status This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on July 7, 2000 in the Cultural category. Product Description
Concepts of ecological integrity have recently been proposed tofacilitate enhanced protection of biological and ecological resourcesagainst the threat of human activities. The promotion of ecologicalintegrity as a basis for public policy and decision making stems fromscientists and others concerned about the threats of human activitiesto ecosystems and species, and from philosophers attempting to derivea more suitable ethic to guide the relationships between humans andthe non-human environment. Although ecological integrity has beenproposed as a norm for public policy and decision making, the conceptis relatively new and therefore the underlying scientific andphilosophical rationales have not been fully developed. This bookoffers a number of perspectives to stimulate and inform futurediscussion on the importance and consequences of ecological integrityfor science, morality and public policy. Audience: Environmental professionals, whether academic, governmental or industrial, or working in the private consultancysector. Also suitable as an upper-level reference text. ... Read more

Product Description
Trees hold a powerful place in American constructions of what is good in nature and the environment. As we attempt to cope with environmental crises, trees are increasingly enlisted with great fervor as agents of our stewardship over nature. In this innovative and impassioned book, Shaul E. Cohen exposes the way that environmental stewardship is undermined through the manipulation of trees and the people who plant them by a partnership of big business, the government, and tree-planting groups. He reveals how positive associations and symbols that have been invested in trees are exploited by an interlocking network of government agencies, private timber companies, and nongovernmental organizations to subvert the power of people who think that they are building a better world. Planting Nature details the history of tree planting in the United States and the rise of popular sentiment around trees, including the development of the Arbor Day holiday and tree-planting groups such as the National Arbor Day Foundation and American Forests. Drawing from internal papers, government publications, advertisements, and archival documents, Cohen illustrates how organizations promote tree planting as a way of shifting attention away from the causes of environmental problems to their symptoms, masking business-as-usual agendas. Ultimately, Planting Nature challenges the relationships between a "green" public, the organizations that promote their causes, and the "powers that be," providing a cautionary tale of cooperation and deception that cuts across the political spectrum.Illustrations: 18 b/w photographs, 2 line illustrations ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Planting Trees is Not Enough
In this thoughtful, well documneted book, Dr. Cohen points out that Americans have for a long time been aware of the damage we are doing to our environment. And for a long time tree planting has been viewed as a method of combating environmental degredation. But too often we treat tree planting as a panacea, though tree planting is not really the cure-all it is often made out to be.Dr. Cohen takes a critical view of such wholesome institutions as Arbor Day and the Global Releaf effort, but this is not out of a belief that planting trees is bad, but out of concern that by engaging in such activities people will not believe that there is more that needs to be done. This is a book that would read well with "Making Peace with the Planet" by Barry Commoner. ... Product Description
Globalization is a multidimensional issue, and its impacts on world resources cross and integrate environmental, economic, political and cultural boundaries. Over the last few decades, the push towards globalization has brought a new dimension in which managers of fisheries and water resources will need to operate; both at the local and global level of governance. In order to effectively address the future sustainability of these resources, it is critical to understand the driving factors of globalization and their effect on fisheries ecosystems and the people who depend on these resources for their cultural and societal well being. This book discusses the social and political changes affecting fisheries, the changes to ecological processes due to direct and indirect impacts of globalization, the changing nature of the goods and services that fisheries ecosystems are able to provide, and the resultant changes in markets and economic assessment of our fishery resources. ...
