5-0 out of 5 stars Moving Autobiography ofSelf-healing
This is a heart warming book about one man's journey into self-healing. In the process, he also learns to help others cure their medical problems. This book is both satisfying and easy to read.It is filled with lots of good take home information that is useful without being preachy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, inspirational
The first half of this book is Dr Schneider's account of how he got to where he is now and who he has helped and healed. The second half has specific exercises for specific disabilities. This book has changed my life and improved my health.I bought this book to help improve my eyesight since Dr Schneider was born blind, and it improved much more than that.I sound like a preacher when I talk about it, my belief is so strong in how well it works.I noticed increased energy immediately after trying some of his exercises.I have developed and improved pain management.I really wish I could get other people to read this book to help themselves, it really helped me.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Movement for Self-Healing
This marvelous handbook with an unprepossessing cover has as its source of power, a significant number of stories and anecdotes
based on the author's personal experience as a natural healer. There is no stronger force for changing and altering our lifestyle than "been there, experienced that".
Schneider takes us from his early years having been born blind through wonderful tales of wry humor and astute observation of his peers and adults that shows his gifts as an intuitive healer.
The book is easy to follow: divided into three parts with 17 chapters. The author vacillated between despair and hope for many years, and the force of his will, along with the inevitable mentor we have all had at times in our lives led him to open up to the world as his vision emerged. As a senior in high school,
Schneider began teaching others how to recognize the equilibrium and balance that our bodies cry for as we gradually act all too often against our better angels of healthiness.
Living abroad, the author continued to learn and express his own wisdom as he helped others with diseases such as polio, failing vision, back problems, arthritis, even multiple sclerosis and muscular dystrophy. Examining the all-too-human phenomenon of "internal resistance to healing", the author uses case studies, graphic drawings, and repetitive examples to help us gain confidence that we too can alter and adopt the behavior of well-being.For example, Schneider devotes a fair amount of space to the well-known but oft overlooked Bates Method of better vision. But he does not focus on that issue with great technical reliance on medical terminology.Indeed, the value of this fine volume is that the subject matter is dealt with in common sense verbiage: "back problems" are near-universal and the mechanics are often way beyond what most people want to know.Schneider knows his subjects of body movement, natural healing with sleep and time, the use of yoga and its variants, visualization, and support from friends and compassionate healers. Einstein (or Virginia Woolf) would be quite happy with the emphatic clarity of his writing.
This book will be of value to those interested in holistic health (and medicine) as well as Philosophy (mind and body issues). His commentary on ageing, breathing, body imagery, and the need to simply "listen" to ourselves may seem simple expressed in a review, but through the two-page Epilogue of his School's Education Director we come to realize that the Meir Schneider Self-Healing Method is a healthful approach of great quiet authority. The seven-page Index is an excellent tool for referencing Schneider's well laid-out and thoughtful scheme of how some 30 people came to improve their health and stay healthy.

Note: a much-shortened version of this review first appeared in
the Nov/Dec issue of New Age Retailer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed with exercises which have had proven results

This whole "Ultimate A to Z Resource" Bible study set is an amazing set of books. My kids (I have 6 plus step-kids) have requested this set of books for their own study libraries. They are easy to understand, yet are thorough in their comments. In all of my use of these resource books, I have not found one instance where the Gospel or Biblical principles have been compromised in any way - something that is a rarity in books written and published in this generation."Nelson Publishers" is to be highly commended for their work.

In this delightful collection of anecdotes, Michael Colgrass invites the reader into his private encounters with Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Dizzy Gillespie, and a host of other key figures in American music. Maverick to the core, Colgrass also writes about romancing a Cold War spy in Bucharest, composing a ballet overnight for the Joffrey Ballet, and playing a gig for a stripper that landed him a job in West Side Story. His anecdotes - often humorous and profound - describe a pivotal era in American music that shaped this Pulitzer Prize-winning composer. A "must read" for music lovers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A CLASSIC
What a treat to read about a composers life in this format of small anecdotes. It was totally entertaining. Learning about the tenacity and vision to create a unique life was most interesting. Great writing, wonderful sense of humor, a giftto the reader. It is a story of overcoming struggles, seizing the right opportunities,
celebrating success, and making one's own "luck" in order to pursue and achieve the goals - culminating in a successful career.A lesson for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now that's how to be an artist in the 20th century
Being an artist in America ain't easy. How do you put a life together and create work you care about? When someone pulls it off, you pay attention.Michael Colgrass pulls it off year after year with passion, wit and force (just listen to Snow Walker for organ and orchestra!).How does he do it?

Mike's answer is deceptively simple. He works his ass off, he chose the right life partner, and he always challenges himself to stretch creatively. His stories are alternately funny, poignant, informative, sweet, and leave you with a lived-in sense of the grand sweep of American music in the 20th century. It is amazing to reflect on the music history that lives in the man's bones. You hear "Copland" and "Cage" and perhaps you think "giant"--Michael Colgrass hears their names and says "Oh yeah, that guy I know--lemme tell you a story..."I have had the pleasure of hearing a few of these stories "live" and was happy to see them, along with many new surprises, in this delightful book.Definitely check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gem of a Book
Adventures of an American Composer by Michael Colgrass is a gem of a book. sparkling with wit and glowing with genuine warmth. Colgrass shares many of his life's experiences, drawing readers inside the worlds of jazz and classical music, as he describes the transitions he made in his career from percussionist to composer. His "adventures" are short pieces, none more than just a few pages in length. Although each anecdote is brief, Colgrass manages to be candid about his collaborations and chance meetings with many of the legendary figures in the world of music and theater. He stresses how important it is for artists who have already achieved success to nurture new talent.

Throughout the book, Colgrass is honest about his own feelings, sometimes expressing regret about how he handled specific situations or interacted with some individuals.Although most of the book is written in a matter-of-fact style, some of his anecdotes demonstrate sensitivity and joy, especially when he describes his relationships with his family. Through this inside look at his own life and the music world he inhabits, Colgrass has succeeded in painting a picture of a truly creative person. He demonstrates how talent, determination and confidence helped him to follow his inner calling. His joy in his work and his ability to overcome obstacles shine through every page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
An interesting set of recollections by a successful musical composer who couldn't read music before he started college. Many of his stories point out how chance encounters can change a life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Journey of Two Lifetimes
Colgrass will take you on a fascinating journey, meeting all sorts of people, places and things he has done. Indeed, he has lived a life that most people would require 2 lifetimes to live.

His journey starts in his hometown of Brookfield, Illinois. We see a precocious trickster, who comes up with ingenious pranks such as, breaking a fellow classmate's pencils and placing the pieces back on her desk when she wasn't looking; sticking spitballs to the classroom ceiling; then (my favorite) setting up every percussion instrument in the room to come crashing down at once. (A la the domino effect!)

Colgrass also has a talent for drawing. He drew portraits of jazz greats Charlie Spivak, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton and more. He was introduced to these greats, courtesy of Mike, the one-eyed doorman at the Oriental Theater in downtown Chicago.

The story, "Getting Gertie's Garter", is a very sad, but truthful anecdote. Young Colgrass had already learned that when you want something you go after it. A lesson that many people never learn, as stated by the downcast Miss Macdonald.

Colgrass takes us to New York where he discovers be-bop and hears the likes of Charlie Parker and Max Roach. Sometimes, I wish that I'd been born in an earlier era to have partaken the musical delights of those artists.

His great sense of humor is constant in these stories. Some of my favorites are: stuffed bears in the army, complete with uniforms and caps; trying to pick-up a beautiful girl in Paris; romancing a spy in Bucharest and many more.

After freelancing in New York and playing with the best musicians and orchestras, he makes a sudden change in his career and turns to the theatre, mime, and clown playing. As if that wasn't enough, we go on his journey to NLP, his ESP experiences, life in the Arctic with Ennuits...enough!

There is no excuse for not reading this marvelous book! And for those of you who chant, "I don't have any time!", I have a suggestion...the stories are only 2 or 3 pages long; you can read a couple, put the book down and come back later. Each anecdote leaves you with some philosophical thoughts and laughs. It is easy reading, the print is large and clear (very important for some of us over 50!) and chalked full of famous and interesting people and places. I shall re-read this many times!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good resource but woefully incomplete.
The Celebrity Directory may be an indispensible resource for those dealing with celebrities on a regular basis, but in many basic respects it is disappointingly incomplete. While the inclusion of celebrities from previous years is welcome, new celebrities seem only to be added four or five years after they become "stars" - when they are added at all.

The introduction claims that "if a person is famous and worth locating, it's almost certain that his or her name and address is listed" in the Directory. People like Kevin Smith, Russell Crowe, Jeff Probst, Jason Mewes, Owen Wilson, Peter Jackson, and Jackie Chan are going to very disappointed to learn that they are neither famous nor worth locating. Fortunately, the mailing addresses of Gabe Kaplan, Men at Work, Wendy Jo Sperber, and His Royal Majesty King Tupou IV of Tonga are all readily available.

That last paragraph may seem a bit unfair, but come on! Owen Wilson has been making films since 1994 and Jackie Chan is quite possibly the most famous movie actor on the planet, if you count Asian box office - and these days, you should. A lag time of two or three years might be acceptable but eight or nine or even twenty or thirty, as in Chan's case? Inexcusable.

I will grant the editors that they have an impressive backlog and that they have accounted for a reasonable number of modern actors, but this book is not a comprehensive celebrity resource or even a comprehensive actor's resource. There's still a bit of legwork to be done if you're looking for someone who became active in the last five years and isn't yet a mega-super-star...

The essays give practical advice about the best available literature and audio-visual material in the field of archaeology related to the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, early Judaism, women in the ancient world, and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Product Description
"Exciting, original, and highly readable. . . . This is a rich, challenging, original and beautifully written account of Muir's inner development as an environmental thinker."-John A. Tallmadge, president of the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment

As a founder of the Sierra Club and promoter of the national parks, as a passionate nature writer and as a principal figure of the environmental movement, John Muir stands as a powerful symbol of connection with the natural world. But how did Muir's own relationship with nature begin? In this pioneering book, Steven J. Holmes offers a dramatically new interpretation of Muir's formative years, one that reveals the agony as well as the elation of his earliest experiences of nature.

From his childhood in Scotland and Wisconsin through his young adulthood in the Midwest and Canada, Muir struggled-often without success-to find a place for himself both in nature and in society. Far from granting comfort, the natural world confronted the young Muir with a full range of practical, emotional, and religious conflicts. Only with the help of his family, his religion, and the extraordinary power of nature itself could Muir in his late twenties find a welcoming vision of nature as home-a vision that would shape his lifelong environmental experience, most immediately in his transformative travels through the South and to the Yosemite Valley.

More than a biography, The Young John Muir is a remarkable exploration of the human relationship with wilderness. Accessible and engaging, the book will appeal to anyone interested in the individual struggle to come to terms with the power of nature.

For the first time placing the development of Muir's environmental consciousness in the context of his human relationships, this major reinterpretation of the early life of John Muir emphasizes Muir's childhood and youth rather than adulthood. Holmes shows how Muir's youthful experiences and influences caused him to perceive his natural surroundings as a religiously-charged "home," continuous with the emotional and cultural meanings of his actual home. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterfully, Intricately-Done Biography
Environmental History is a growing and much-needed field of Academia. John Muir, a peaceful yet titanic figure in America's own enviromental movement, like Rachel Carson, like, in his own right-Teddy Roosevelt, is a Pioneer of this movement. Professor Steven J.Holmes. Lecturer in History and Literature at Harvard University, has produced a deeply poignant book about this deeply thoughtful man, i.e. in Muir's "formative" years, wherein his Scottish roots clashed, then melded and germinated beautifully with the ever-more wild Wisconsin of Muir's American years. Yet this child of Dunbar, Scotland, was to, even at the "tadpole's age" of five, begin having transformative and even existential experiences, mostly derived from and spawned by the "Wilderness," by Nature, but too by Muir's love for his beloved mother. According to Holmes' carefully-documented and sourced biographical history of Muir, the young Lad had, even at a VERY young(before age 2)age, an UNCANNY ability to interact with, respond to, and above all, Deeply TRUST his Mother-especially, began when John Muir was just two months of age.
