4-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to Beading
This book gave insight on how too work with beads, findings, and tools. I found this book good for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners, inspiring for more advanced beaders.
Madeleine Rollason has done a gorgeous job with this book.
There are a lot of great books for beginning beaders, with different sorts of projects. This one is fantastic, it's got a lot of different projects, all very clearly photographed and illustrated and well explained. It covers all the basic stitches and has projects to go with them that aren't intimidating and turn out gorgeous. One of them, the peyote stitched choker done in flat peyote with fringe is one I'm planning on doing. It's simple enough to be done quickly, and has enough area and flexibility for design I can make it something that's uniquely mine. For me, that's the best sort of project, something I can develop my own ideas from, and this book is full of the techniques you'll need to do just that.
It's 64 pages, all in color, and it's a great book for a beginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for basics only
Short and straight to the point... tells about types of beads, stiching, right-angle weave and gives very simple projects. It's only a warm up. For somebody who has never done any beadwork, this is an excellent intro.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to Beadwork
As the title suggests this book is geared to the beginner. And, the photographs of the beadwork are absolutely stunning! Many photograhs are used to illustrate the techniques and projects which are more helpful than the usual diagrams used in many books on the subject. Techniques include: bead stringing, netting, peyote, brick, right-angle weave, and herringbone stitches. Although the projects given are simple for the beginner, the author also gives more advanced variations for some of the projects(such as the bracelet shown on the cover). Overall, this is a good, basic book for learning beadweaving, but, given it's price, would also serve as a useful addition to the advanced beader's library. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice little book
Nice little book...a compilation of different beaders work. Price was right, didn't see it in person, but glad I got it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best to get Beadwork Creates Jewelry: 40 designs
I think that is the title. It takes the best designs from this necklace book, as well as the three Beadwork Creates books: Bracelets, Rings, and Earrings.

Of the four books culled for Beadwork Creates Jewelry, this necklaces book is my favorite. There are more than a few necklaces in this book though, that you wonder how in the world they were picked. Some are almost laughably simple, and one or two are just painfully out of style.

My biggest complaint with the book is that you don't get to see a picture of all of the necklace on some of the more complicated projects.Even with several pictures of each necklace, there are some whose parts you just have to imagine, as they are not shown.Likewise, some directions are vague, as though the designer only grudgingly allowed their work in the book, but wanted to make sure their design could not be copied, or even successfully sort-of reproduced. When they are that secretive, please just leave their work out of a project book

5-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork Creates Necklaces: 30 Designs (Beadwork Creates series)
Another in the series put together by Jean Campbell with some excellent new designs, and reworked old ones.Everyones taste is different, with most of the patterns suitable for day or night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork Creates
I purchased this book because I had the others in the series and wanted to add to it.Being an avid beader these books are great for ideas and learning how to do new techniques.I am anxiouslylooking forward to creating some of the projects in the book.I recommend this for anyone who has an interest in more than simple beading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sigh, not what I had hoped for from Beadwork Magazine.
I was hoping for something great from Beadwork (the magazine) and this was not it.Lots of pictures and examples all with instructions should have made up for my disappointment, however, it didn't.The examples of beadwork necklaces are mediorce at best and can be found in nearly every book available on the market today.Beadwork Magazine has had amazing bead artists in their mag and I was hoping those were to be the pieces with instructions offered. The size and cut of the book is not usable either.I understand that publishers like to experiement with different sizes and shapes to capture buyers attention, but as a practical use, it has none. The pages do not lay flat in spite of this being touted in their advertisment. The long, skinny length of this does not allow for ease in following directions either.I have watched the bead industry soar these past 5-7 years and this book does not reflect this creative direction.Perhaps I am a bit jaded as I have been beading for so long and have seen what is out there, still, an offering from Beadwork Magazine should have had more splash and usable pizazz. This may be a strong springboard into beading for the beginning beader. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate -- Should be reprinted
I love this book. Diane Fitzgerald is already one of my favorite author/teachers for beadwork. I had been taking _Brick Stitch_ out of libraries repeatedly but finally found an affordable copy at a local bead store. I, too, love the Telsem necklace.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great patterns
I borrowed this book from a friend and love it, but the price printed on the back of the book is $21.95. Why is it selling here for over $44.00????????????

5-0 out of 5 stars Daring and adventurous beading
I haven't taken the time to learn this kind of beading, but it looks spectacular and quite daring--different, and would make good conversation pieces.Beautiful pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tool
This is a comprehensive book on the brick stitch. It gives detailed instructions as well as beautiful eye candy for inspiration. This book will teach the beginner and motivate the experienced to a higher level.A book every beader should have in her library.

5-0 out of 5 stars mainly positive review
I haven't yet read the book thoroughly because I'm beading a peyote project now but I can say I like the explanation on the history of brick stitch. I think the same shapes done by different people, each work varying in colors andmuch the same shape is somewhat pointless, though I enjoyed the variety of colors and the works are lovely. I think you could have included a wider range of instructions on how to build a sculptoral shape step by step. The works included in the gallery are beautiful and inspiring. Have I writtenbetween 75- 300 words ? I'll let you have the fun of counting (if you ever intend to do so - ha ha ha !!! )Tirza, Israel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEADING ART NOUVEAU
Art Nouveau style jewelry inspirations for an era gone by!

Beadwork Inspired by Art: Art Nouveau Jewelry and Accessories

4-0 out of 5 stars Jewelry Making
This book explains a lot about the art behind the designs. Is has step by step instructions that are very easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this Jewelry Design Book Inspired by the Greats of the Art Nouveau Movement!
I have owned and enjoyed reading this fine and thoughtful jewelry design book for several months now. I believe that the Art Nouveau movement is quite complex and difficult to understand. Fortunately Judith Durant and Jean Campbell have paired together successfully on other beadwork books (one was another "art inspired" book I recommend, Impressionist Jewelry), and are able to make clear what might be complicated to grasp.
The Art Nouveau movement, popular at its peak during the 1880's up through the early 1900's, not only reacted against the influence of Industrial Revolution, it embraced it, as many of the aspects of the actual buildings designed at the time and the decorative Art Nouveau styles could only have been made possible by the new techniques of the Industrial Revolution itself. This is pointed out by the authors of this book.
I am only disappointed that an Aubrey Beardsley project was not included in Art Nouveau. Otherwise I find it great! The Laburnum bracelet, which is influenced by a lamp designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, is stunning, true to its origins, and drenched with the earthy color of semiprecious stones and bronzed components. The Lalique earrings are charming and elegant in crystal and gold. The Metro Station earrings are fabulous and teach the reader, in excellent fashion, at least two new types of wire working if you are a newbie.
The cover piece is so Parisian, sexy, and so representative of the famous nightclub, Chat Noir, for which the bracelet is named, I expected a French Quarter nightclub show when I opened the book. Live your dreams!
As Art Nouveau style has a lot of meaning for me, with its rich organic heritage and its sensuous
vine-y power (after all, it influenced all the 1960's-70's psychedelic posters, when I was young), I am drawn to this finely researched and well orchestrated book. The projects are lovely and cool, including the one accessory piece, an amazing and outstanding beaded vase after The Kiss by Klimt. One project that took my breath away: The Galleries Lafayette Dome Pendant. If you have ever had the opportunity to stare up at that dome, you will be in awe at what the authors have managed to accomplish in replicating, with great care, drama, and love: the beautiful ceiling of the Galleries Lafayette, which was built in 1912.
If you love Art Nouveau, try this book. It is terrific.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Personalized wearable art pieces.
I really liked how the designer took the shapes and color and feel of the art and transformed it into a piece with a similar feel. The directions and illustrations were good and easy to follow which makes a difference to a busy mom like me ....with kids and critters who leave me very little time to be creative.

2-0 out of 5 stars only 12 project, the rest is too general
As a lover of both beading and Art Nouveau, I was very much looing forward to receive this book. Unfortunately this 96 page book contains only 12 projects; 20 pages at the end of the book give you pictures of supplies and explanation of general techniques that you can find in every general beading book.
the 12 projects displayed in the book are, with the exception of one, not working with Art Nouveau jewelry patterns, but aretheme and color inspired bead works that want to match a lamp, architectural structures and a painting.The two truly beautiful projects in this book as far as I am concerned are the Villa Igiea Palermo necklace and the Casa Mila necklace; .... The print and paper of the book are awesome;
All in all a two out of five....

2-0 out of 5 stars frustrated beader
I tried to make one of the beads, but the instructions were completely inadequate, so I was pretty frustrated after my first attempt. In the list of materials it said you needed seed beads in five colors and only colors A, B and C were mentioned. There were no bead patterns added, so after a few hours I gave up.

This is just what I was looking for, I just love the beaded beads that I have seen and this book has just the instructions I was looking for! FANTASTIC!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful beads don't have to be difficult to make!
This book shows you how to make embellished beads with simple and straightforward instructions. The pictures and descriptions are concise and easy to follow.Having a short attention span, I like to see success, if not completion, within a relatively short period of time.Projects that take me lots of time to create don't often get finished. The beads in this book are fairly quick to make, providing an inspiring foundation upon which your creativity can build.Who said that beautiful beads had to be fussy and difficult to make or require expensive materials?

3-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork creates Beaded Beads
I have a similar book, and only found one of the patterns of interest to me, however, someone who doesn't have a book on this subject might like it.I sent it back, since it duplicated a lot of things in my other book, and I felt it cost a lot considering the few projects it had.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT for anyone needing clear instructions-none of her book are!
Book is too small and will not stay open. Pictures choosen for book are nice. Instruction are NOT that helpful. I got excited and bought all her little narrow books after reading somewhere they were great for beginners. NOT SO! WHAT HAPPENED TO REAL PICTURES SHOWING HANDS ON INSTRUCTIONS? There are MUCH better books out there. This seems printed right out of a magazine like Bead and Button that has poor instructions also. Lines and dots do not make clear instructions unless you are a cat chasing a ball of yarn.
I sold all my books on Ebay.

2-0 out of 5 stars nice projects, poor instructions
I tried to make 3 projects so far using the book and have had no luck. It seems that the projects are missing half of their directions. I'm not a novice and this just frustrated me. I found the same book at the library and now regret purchasing this when I could have been frustrated for free. I'll end up taking it to a local bead store and getting an instructor to decipher the projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Great Idea After Another!!
While there are a few duds here (I don't really need directions to "design" a charm bracelet; it's a plain link bracelet with charms attached.) this book has given me inspirations galore. A woman wanted to purchase the first bracelet I made from it right off my arm! Even after using it for a few years I still go back for ideas. In fact, I've noticed that "new" designs I've seen elsewhere recently have just been minor modifications of those in this book. I guess they've become classics!

It's a must for anyone who enjoys the quick satisfaction of a bracelet, or any beader looking for the best of the best from Beadwork magazine.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork Creates Bracelets
I really like the book.Great illustrations and instructions.

The only negative I can find about this book is trying to keep it open while using.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little book
I've just started with the projects in this book and they are awesome. I especially want to thank Nikia Angel for her contribution. Holiday Star is a fantastic project, although I have no idea how you manage to see size 15/0 seed beads. I did mine using 11/0 and struggled, but they turned out fantastic. Thanks to Jean Campbell and every designer who contributed to this book. The whole series is helping me get to the next level with my beading. Rita

Beadwork has been steadily gaining popularity among crafters, and no area of the genre garners more interest than the intricate designs of the Apache, Comanche, and Lakota peoples of the American Southwest, who use their designs to relate legends and pass down tribal lore. Here are 15 authentic projects using such traditional stitches as the flat and circular peyote stitches, the Comanche weave, free-form feathering, and more. Each project is accompanied by a rich explanation of how the colors, shapes, and combinations of materials interact to tell a story. 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful beadwork
The history of Native American beadwork is interestingly written; the illustrations are beautiful and the projects are easy to follow. All in all, it's a beautiful little book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good instruction, good range of projects
I have this book as well as Theresa Geary's Creative Native American Beading book (Creative Native American Beading). Both are very good and in several respects interchangeable - not in the individual projects, of course, but in approach, quality, in the ranges of difficulty of the projects, etc. Both are project-centered books, have excellent full-color photos throughout, and have clear directions, advice on beads, needles, thread/wire, tensioning, tie-off, and other relevant techniques. I particularly like that Geary gives specific advice on topics like attaching beadwork panels to fabric and leather. That said, I wouldn't necessarily recommend either of these books to a new beader. Although easy projects are included, there just isn't enough handholding beginners information to start someone out cold from a book here.

The author is Native American and was traditionally taught. As with Geary's Creative Native American Beading book, I bought this one for one specific project. And, like the other, it's unfortunate that Amazon does not have a "look inside" for this book, as there is a range of projects presented in both type and difficulty level. Any buyer would be amply repaid for the price of the book by completing even one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Wanted
Because I could preveiw this book on Amazon, it met my expectation when it arrived. It was shipped quickly and arrived in excellent condition.Really easy to do business.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent on technique
This book is excellent for describing technique. It's easy to follow and do.There are lots of interesting patterns and techniques you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.

There is nothing traditional about what is described here. These are techniques for modern dodads and keychains.Still, it's great fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Native American motif is a plus
There are some good books on techniques and materials in the shelves out there. The there is a lot of kitsch out there that makes beading look like a second class skill or hobby.

This book excels in making beading a first class art. Although the Projects and techniques say they are from the Southwest, they are universal. The symbols do focus on the San Carlos Apache tribe. The finished product would be Worthing of giving as gifts or placing on the mantle:
Sonora-weave Choker
Netted Gourd
Floral Bracelet
Bone-hair-pipe Bracelet
Leather medicine gag
Triple-strand fetish necklace
Bear earrings
Comanche-weave feather
Chile Pepper
Corn-stitch earrings
Phoenix key ring
Kokopelli amulet bag
Netted basket
Flat round peyote basket
Powwow perfume bag
Navaho bead rug
Kokopelli pin
Medicine wheel

The book also contains information on Native American beadwork from the Southwest. Native American Spirituality. And a pretty good glossary.

Of course everyone will have their favorite; mine is Netted Basket.

Product Description
A comprehensive study of the beadwork of the Crow Indian Nation from 1805 to contemporary times. Between 1907 and 1916 Dr. Robert H. Lowie made repeated visits to the Crow Agency Reservation to study their traditional customs and, as a result, published the first paper on Crow Indian beadwork.Based on this research, in 1918 William Wildschut began to collect specimens for the Heye Foundation.

His work went far beyond merely collecting specimens. He asked questions from his Crow associates and in 1927 produced a manuscript for the Heye in which he concluded that "true Crow beadwork was not borrowed from the neighboring Western Sioux, nor from any other Tribe. It possessed a distinctive character of its own."

In 1957, Dr. John C. Ewers, a truly enjoyable expert, made further inquiries and this book was produced providing an illustrated description and history of Crow Indian Beadwork from the time of its first mention by the fur trader, Francois Larouque, in 1805.Included are sections on Men's Dress Clothing (Shirts, Leggings, Feather Bonnets, Vests, Gauntlets, and Feather Fans); Women's Dress Clothing (Dresses, Leggings and Belts); Robes and Blankets; Moccasins; Riding Gear (Saddles, Head Ornaments, Horse Collars, Cruppers and Saddle Blankets); Containers (Saddle Bags, Quivers, Gun Cases, Sword and Lance Cases, Cradles, Belt Pouches, Ration Ticket Pouches, Mirror Pouches, and Pipe and Tobacco Pouches); Characteristics of Crow Indian Beadwork (Beadwork Techniques, Beadwork Designs, and Bead Colors); Symbolism in Crow Beadwork; History of Crow Beadwork and a bibliography.

3-0 out of 5 stars No patterns
The cover of the book was beautiful and I thought the patterns would be included. While the book has great inspirational pictures of work, it was disappointing that no patterns were included. I think from now on I will read reviews for the books before I buy a book. The work in the book is beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars True Artistry
I know I can't make most of these items with my innately limited hand and eye coordination, so luckily it's not a how to book, but such inspiration! The examples give you a great idea of what can be done with color, shape, texture and design. I bought a used copy since it didn't have instructions, and was very happy I did so I can look at it and dream. It has inspried a few projects of my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and still one of the best
Back in 1992,If you said "beadwork," people would think of the simply strung love beads of the 1960's, or they might consider Native American beadwork.Yet the art of serious beadwork was still alive and was growing, thanks to people like the authors of this book. Unlike today, when there are more books on beadwork than one could possibly read and still have time to actually DO some beadwork, there were no real books on the kinds of beadwork being produced by a few small pockets of artisans.

Then "The New Beadwork" was published.

It would be hard to overstate the impact that this slim volume has had on the art of beading. In the early nineties, if you wanted to buy a book on beadwork, this was it. Not that anyone buying the book would feel as if she hadn't gotten her money's worth - this book became an instant treasure. It was a major factor in elevating a certain calibre of beadwork to an art, just as a beautiful woodcarving or an ancient mosaic is art.The beadwork in this book is so far from love beads or the macrame potholder hanging in your grandmother's kitchen, it seems almost criminal to speak of them in the same breath.

Any serious beadworker, or anyone who aspires to be a beadworker needs this book, as inspiration and also to see how far we have come.If one could only purchase a half-dozen books on beadwork (which would be tragic), this would have to take a place with "The Art and Elegance of Beadwork" and "Creative Beadweaving" by Carol Wilcox Wells, "The Beader's Guide to Color" by Margie Deeb, "The Art of Beadwork: Historic Inspiration, Contemporary Design" by Valerie Hector and Lois Sherr Dubin, and "The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present" (Unabridged Edition)by Lois Sherr Dubin. This listing is subject to debate, of course, but most beadworkers would consider these books to be the best of the best.

It's a pity this book is out of print - but it is still available, and still fresh and useful. It is a worthy purchase for anyone who wants to raise her beadwork out of the craft category and into the realm of artwork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extreme Eye-Candy for Beadwork Lovers!
This book is for one thing only - inspiration! But what inspiration! I'm an actually on my second copy of this book as my first became so worn from my paging and drooling.

The pieces are shown alphabetically by artisan with a two line biography, then a brief desciption of the piece and a listing of techniques used - I love the fact that the dimensions are given with each piece! There is also included an artisan's statement giving you insight into how the artisan sees his/her work.

As this was originally published in 1992 some of the resources are out of date but a web search will remedy that. Also, don't buy this book for instructions on how to do the beadwork, this is strictly eye-candy and how sweet it is! This is the book I pull from my shelf often to remind me of how much I love this medium, how far I have to go in my explorations, and how much fun getting there will be!

Sadly this book is out of print, but if you are a serious beadworker or someone who wants to see the best that beadwork can be - spend the time and money to get a copy of this treasure.

Very easy to read; I am glad I bought it ! Great price as well!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jean Campbell
Jean Campbell is an expert at giving clear instructions on how to bead.I highly recommend this book and this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will tempt you to get beading ASAP
I have done a few beaded projects: I tried bead knitting a small bag and I made a really stunning tomato pincushion with beaded crochet. This book covers those techniques in the glossary/instructions in the back, but the main focus is on various beading techniques to make really beautiful jewelry.

Most of the jewelry are bands of woven beading, using needles and various seed beads such as Japanese seed beads, Miyukis, Delicas and bicone crystals, for example. But there are also semi-precious stone beadwork mixed with beads and silver tubes (Heishi) and so forth. The book is divided into bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. The stitches involved are peyote, brick, right angle weaving, bead embroidery, crochet, stringing and wire work. Quite an assortment of techniques.

The beaded rings were quite interesting; most of the time, we expect to see anything but a ring in beading. However, the "scrunchie" ring done with elastic and heishi metal beads and Swarovski crystals looks like a project that a crafter might find just the thing to get into beading.

The necklaces include a stunning pearl net choker and a one-to-many strand necklace that looks like ones you see made by famous costume jewelry designers.

Ther are 40 projects in this book, enough to keep the most avid beader busy for hours, and all of the projects looked like something you'd wear fashionably, i.e, not-home-made looking ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beaded handbags
This book has nice beaded bags in it.The bags are mostly large bags for adults.I was looking for smaller bags for dolls. The book didn't have any.Overall though a nice book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork Creates Beaded Bags: 30 Designs (Beadwork Creates series)
Another excellent book put together by Interweave, a must for all beaders, so many patterns, so little time to do them all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite and artistic bags
I agree with other reviewers that this shape of book is not the easiest to read, but I flattened my copy and put a weight on it to hold it open while working... no big deal. It's what's inside that counts!

The 30 exquisite purse and bag designs in the book, shown in full color photographs, are contributed by different artists, and each is extremely unique in its design and method.Several of the purses are knitted, and some are crocheted. Some have strands of beads couched onto fabric. Some are created with peyote stitch or on a bead loom, then sewn together. One is sewn onto a metal purse frame. One I partricularly like has strands of beads glued (using special sticky tape) onto a purchased tote in a gorgeous design. Some are large and shopping-baggish, and others are small amulet bags or clutches.Every one of them is gorgeous, and you will not find anything like them in any store, unless it is an expensive boutique. They look like collectors' items.

There are no quick and easy projects here. They require time, commitment to read through the instructions and follow them step by step, and skill with the hands. The written instructions are fairly easy to understand, but experienced crafters will follow them more easily. There are illustrations, but a few more would be helpful.

The last section of the book shows how to do all the different stitches and techniques used in the projects, but for knitted bags, you will already need to know how to knit.Hand and machine sewing skills are required for some of the projects.

3-0 out of 5 stars great stuff, bad format
I have to first say that the photos and projects in this book, as well as the others in the Beadwork series, are gorgeous. They are not your typical jewelry items:they show unique colors and mixtures and ideas.Love that part. What I hate about the book is the format...it is long and skinny with a tough spine. In other words, extremely difficult to hold, much less do a project from. It's so narrow that the inside page closest to the spine often cuts off certain words.I tried going to office max to have one drilled to be loose leaf, with the spine cut off, but it still makes for awkward work. Why they couldn't make this a full size book with a lay flat spine is beyond me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Designed to appeal to all levels of beadworkers
Jean Campbell edits Beaded Bags, a survey of 30 bag projects designed to appeal to all levels of beadworkers. These aren't just the usual rectangular bags; they are especially notable projects in presenting a diversity of bag styles and designs, from clutches and drawstring purses to wrist bags and market bags. Techniques range from embroidery and loom weaving to bead crochet, with plenty of colorful photos and step-by-step clear instructons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for the experienced
This is a huge volume full of 32 projects for advanced and intermediate beaders. Not only that but it has the added bonus of a DVD with 20 tutorials, print out pattens and a lot more. Sounds too good to be true - the projects have been previously published in Julia's other books - so be careful if you already have these.

If you haven't - then this is a brilliant book -I love the handbags, jewellery and boxes. These designs are distinctive and look very complex to a beginner like me. The instructions are very detailed with good drawings and photographs to support the text. The designs themselves are some of the best beading projects I have seen. There is also a chapter on designing your own patterns, useful for beaders wishing to create their own line of jewellery. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beaders
I love impressionist art and I am a beader. What a great book!! It shows different paintings with jewelry made to look like the picture. This is a "must have" for the artist/beader on your gift list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of new jewelry ideas.
This author's techniques are very straightforward andher directions are very easy to follow. Additionally, the photography in this book is excellent and really helps get the point across to the reader. I find it really helps when I am trying put my own spin on a project to have good photo's to refer to.I believe this is book is written so that crafty people can really create some great jewelry pieces that also reflect their own individual style and color preferences.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Job Interpreting Classic Paintings into Stunning Jewelry!
The 19th century art movement, Impressionism, has a glorious beauty when viewed.. It is characterized by the distinctive style of the artists' brushstrokes. Additionally the frequent choice was to paint "en plein air (outside)" in order that the light of the sun and other aspects such as actual changing of time could be portrayed. Ordinary subjects and unusual angles were frequently employed.
I have many loves, and Impressionism is one of them. Those people who say "I don't know much about art but I know what I like!" usually, these days, DO recognize and like/love Impressionism. We cleave to it emotionally, from way inside. I could be talking through my hat. However this is something I believe and I think the prices paid by collectors for many of the Impressionists' paintings, when they appear, rarely, at the top auction houses, bear me out.
I was therefore VERY open to read this book, written by two top jewelry editors and authors, and to view their jewelry. Jean Campbell and Judith Durant have done something super fascinating: they have interpreted specific paintings by specific artists, each one explained first and then reinterpreted in beads and thread. This book,
Beadwork Inspired by Art
Impressionist
jewelry and accessories,
is, to put it simply, breathtaking both in concept and in execution. I love this book.
I think if you examine the cover you will see why I like this book so much. It is the "Landscape bracelet", after Vincent Van Gogh's "Landscape with Carriage and Train". How amazingly did the authors interpret this painting by Van Gogh! They essentially nailed it! I feel as if each one of the paintings which they chose has been equally as well defined and at times taken and brought to its essence. Successfully and movingly, frankly.

The authors begin by explaining why they chose to write this book and offer this homage to Impressionism. As a beader I deeply understand the desire to work with color, and then to challenge oneself by going beyond that to garner inspiration from painting or other artistic avenues. They discuss this and offer a list of Impressionist painters. They discuss their methods, what to expect, and then get on to the projects. Are they beautiful? Yes, they are! I strongly recommend this book. I believe there is not a single piece in this unique jewelry design book by Jean Campbell and Judith Durant which doesn't hit the nail on the head, grab the reader's attention, and, amazingly, encourage the reader to grasp more from the painting as well as the piece of jewelry inspired by it.

Projects from this book, which also offers a cool framed woven piece, which I particularly loved, and wish to point out were:
"The Banana Plantation Necklace", after a painting by Pierre August Renoir, which has mindblowing colors and an exuberance of branch fringe with a matching focal bead, all in the colors of the painting...greens, oranges, blues, topazes,--You are sooo there! It is great!
"Mango Woman Pendant", after a painting by Paul Gauguin, "Woman with a Mango", which offers a spare and lovely circlet of gold for the neckpiece, and a seed beaded spiral focal of a fabulous inky blue, finished with gold and a mango colored Swarovski briolette drop, with a matching drop at the back as well. This has the use of space which delights me as a designer.
"The Dancers in Blue Earrings", inspired by Degas' painting "Two Dancers in Blue" -- sweet blue seed bead earrings with Swarovski rounds which just flounce and enchant completely!

You owe it to yourself to get this book. If you are transported by the Impressionists, as I am, or just like really intelligent and really artistically creative projects, I believe you will find this book amazing.

1-0 out of 5 stars so disappointed
I was so looking forward to this book, the idea is excellent, however the content is very disappointing. The projects are scarce and uninspiring.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beadwork Inspired by Art: Impressionist Jewelry and Accessories (Beadwork Inspired by Art)
I was somewhat disappointed in this book considering who the contributing authors are.

Although the pieces did match the color and feel of the paintings depicted I felt that the designs should have been created in both medium and high quality materials. And perhaps 2 or more designs inspired from the same picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the Beadwork Creates series
Like all the Beadwork Creates Interweave books, it is gorgeously printed with full colors. It has a bunch of projects in it that are all very well thought out and explained and in a lot of different styles. Ring ideas can be tricky, but I like doing rings because they work up so quickly compared to a lot of other projects.
The materials for the projects are not hard to find, and you can really a learn a lot from the many artists who contributed to this book.
There is a good mix of projects for beginners and things to challenge and inspire more advanced bead artists.I love this series.

5-0 out of 5 stars beadwork creates beaded rings

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas
I own many of the Interweave Press Bead book series. Beaded Rings not only gave some good designs, but gave some great ideas to use for my own ring designs. I felt the instructions were easy enough.

3-0 out of 5 stars a useful resource for applique, embroidery, or even beadwork
while this book is not as fabulous as the author's first, _quilitng patterns from native american designs_, it is a wide-ranging group of line drawings based on the beadwork of many north, central and south american tribes.

this isn't a picture or pattern book, it is a design resource for the quilter who wants to produce something out-of-the-ordinary--combining the designs in this book with those in the first would result in beautiful, unusual quilts.

the designs could also be embroidered, extending the usefulness of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic bead-weaving instructions
This is basically a pamphlet-sized book, which it states in its own description, and it is priced accordingly, so no surprises there. If you are learning how to work with seed beads, this is a great introduction to the brick stitch. I think it's a great idea to convert beadwork instructions to the Kindle format -- you don't have to spend endless amounts of time/paper/printer ink; the portability of the Kindle means you can keep all your instructions and patterns with you.

In case you're worried about how patterns transfer to the Kindle:The diagrams in this particular book are very clear, and at the end -- just in case you need a little more help -- the author offers additional resources.

As a new and avid beader (and a fairly new and avid Kindle-user), I'm very happy to have these instructions in kindle format. I hope others will take the lead and offer more instructional books made specifically for Kindle formatting. Since there are so many patterns you can buy online, I think it would be so smart for jewelry designers to transfer their patterns to Kindle format, so that their patterns are even more accessible to the public. The Kindle market provide designers with a new venue/format for selling patterns, which can only help their sales!

One caveat -- as the Kindle is black & white, color keys and suggestions of color combos would be a nice addition, especially for new crafters. ... Read more
