The islands are a part of the Burmese (Myanmar) Province of Tenasserim (Tanithary). Some of the islands are quite large. Lanbi Island, now a National Park stretches for more than 70km. Most of the islands are uninhabited, visited only by local fishermen and the Moken, one of the few remaining groups of sea-gypsies in the world. The Moken live in family groups on boats made from hollowing out large trees. They roam the archipelago collecting mollusks in the tidal flats, diving for shells and foraging for other food on the islands. They are said to be last survivors of the original people of Southeast Asia who took refuge on boats when the continent was submerged by 100 meters of water after the end of the last ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago. The coast of Tenasserim has always been sparsely inhabited, but by a wide variety of people including the Burmese, Mons, Karens, Thais, Malays, Chinese and descendents of British, Portuguese, Indians and Arabs.

The Country is unique in so far it has managed to preserve its beautiful natural environment, traditional customs and ancient cultural heritage unlike so many countries where concrete has been the order of the day. The British called the country Burma, presumably after the majority race the Bamar, but the name Myanmar was the official name of the country since at least the time of Marco Polo. Myanmar again became the official name in 1989 although some still use the colonial name Burma. Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda As it is mainly in the Tropical Region, Myanmar has a tropical monsoon climate with three seasons: the hot season from mid-February to mid-May, the rainy season from mid-May to mid-October and the cool season from mid-October to mid-February. Annual rainfall varies from 500cm in the coastal regions to 75 cm and less in the central dry zone. Mean temperature ranges are from 32°C in the coastal and delta areas to 21°C in the Northern lowlands.

Central Myanmar is dominated by the Ayeyarwady basin which is shielded by the Rakhine, Chin and Naga Mountains and the Patkai Hills to the west, the Kachin Hills to the north, and the Shan Plateau to the east - which include peaks rising to over 3,000m, influencing the local climate. The river's valley and delta are considered one of the most fertile agricultural regions in Asia. Fruit, vegetables and citrus crops grow abundantly on the Shan Plateau. Forest covers more than 50% of Myanmar's land area. Climate Myanmar's tropical monsoon climate splits the year into two distinct seasons - hot and humid from June to September, and drier cooler conditions throughout the rest of the year. The coolest period is between November to February, and the hottest from March to May, with temperatures in the high 30s in Mandalay and Bagan.

It has borders with India and Bangladesh to the West, China to the North and Laos and Thailand to the east. On its south and southeast is the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. The country can be divided into two geographic regions: the coastal region is known as Lower Myanmar, while the interior region is known as Upper Myanmar. Half of the country is covered by dense forests with springs, waterfalls, rivers and streams where wildlife is in abundance. The most prominent river is the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy), which flows from the northern snowcapped mountains for about 1,930 km to the south, serving as the main waterway, before merging with the Andaman Sea. During the monsoon season, vast expanses of the country turn into a floodplain that stretches from the Andaman Sea to nearly the Himalayan foothills. Functioning as the capital city, it is the main gateway to Myanmar as overland crossing is still technically illegal. The city was founded by King Alaungpaya when he conquered Lower Myanmar in 1755. He chose the site as the administrative capital of Lower Myanmar and named it Yangon, meaning the end of strife. The present day Yangon covers more than 400 sq. km of land and has a population of over 4 million. In 1824, the city was captured by the British and anglicized as Rangoon, but they relinquished control two years later. It again come under British rule at the end of the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852, and was briefly occupied by Japanese forces during World War II. Myanmar gained independence in 1948, Yangon became its capital. Yangon has a unique charm with its old colonial buildings, tree lined streets, bustling markets and tranquil lakes. The city is full of greenery and trees, giving it a totally different feel from other Asian cities. At night, hundreds of stalls line the wide boulevards selling food and drinks. The city is changing rapidly due to its thriving sea port and economic development has resulted in new buildings and busy streets.

Extractions: ENCYCLOPEDIA Myanmar Political Geography Burma Road Related Category: Myanmar Political Geography Burma Road, in China and Myanmar, extending from the Myanmarese railhead of Lashio to Kunming, Yunnan prov., China. About 700 mi (1,130 km) long and constructed through rough mountain country, it was a remarkable engineering achievement. Undertaken by the Chinese after the start of the Sino-Japanese War in 1937 and completed in 1938, it was used to transport war supplies landed at Rangoon and shipped by railroad to Lashio. This traffic increased in importance to China after the Japanese took effective control of the Chinese coast and of Indochina. The Ledo Road (later called the Stilwell Road) from Ledo, India, into Myanmar was begun in Dec., 1942. In 1944 the Ledo Road reached Myitkyina and was joined to the Burma Road. Both roads have lost their former importance and are in a state of disrepair.
