The main economic activity of Santa Cruz is farm production, processing and exporting of leaf tobacco. Other industries are clothing, corn seed production, machinery, and rubber. There is also a small university, however not strong in linguistics. Strong economic measures to contain inflation in the 90's made the cost of living in Brazil, which had always been low, became comparable to the cost of living in the U.S. for a few years. As of February 99, after a strong devaluation of the Brazilian real, and a continuous devaluation during 2001/02, the cost of living has become a lot cheaper again. Santa Cruz is even cheaper than big cities and it might also be a better place to make friends and learn the culture.

A prolific songwriter and consummate instrumentalist, he has performed with countless international artists. In the late 1960s Gil emerged a leader of tropicalismo, a xenophilic movement that revitalized Brazilian arts. His global outlook, however, forced him into exile in 1970. He returned two years later, serving as minister of culture in his home city of Salvador. Lyrically, Gil addresses a range of topics including African and Oriental culture, social inequality, religious syncretism, and technology. He envisions a future of connectivity and tolerance, of environmental awareness and cross-cultural pollination, borne by an "infotide" washing over the planet. Modulations , a new documentary by Brazialian-born documentarian Iara Lee, is the latest combination of the two art forms. The film debuted at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals last winter, and closed the US Resfest, a festival of desktop digital filmmaking, last weekend. The film opens in San Francisco and New York later this month. The New York University grad most recently achieved prominence in underground circles with her 1995 debut feature Synthetic Pleasures . In that film, Lee gave us a probing, occasionally existentialist look at our rapt fascination with the artificial trappings of day-to-day life.
