The Augusta Recreation and Parks Department, with assistance from area law enforcement agencies, implemented the Augusta Boxing Association/ Augusta Police Athletic League (P.A.L.) in an effort to curtail drug abuse and crime among young adults and children. This program uses sports, specifically boxing, as a tool to attract young people who have been given the opportunity to build self confidence, develop self discipline, learn to function as a team, develop good sportsmanship and experience the rewards of always striving to do their best. In its 20 plus year history, several hundred children and young adults have benefited from their participation in the Augusta Boxing Association. The program is preventative in nature as opposed to rehabilitative, with its participants coming from the entire Central Savanna River Area (CSRA). The majority of these children have had no prior contact with the court system. We are able to go beyond the athletic aspects of the program and provide tutoring and drug counseling, take them on field trips and require attendance at a variety of educational programs. Through the boxing tournaments, many of our participants have had the opportunity to travel extensively in the United States and abroad. Several members of our team have qualified to represent the United States Olympic Boxing Association and have competed in locations such as Russia, Germany, Sweden, Poland and England. Jacob Hudson, currently ranked # 1 in the United States, one of our participants, represented the U.S.A in the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York, New York. We are an official affiliate of USA Boxing, the Olympic Authority. We are also a Chapter Member of the National Police Athletice League.

After Rome conquered Greece in 146 B.C., the Olympics diminished in importance and religious significance. Many athletes became interested only in winning money. In A.D. 393, the Emperor Theodosius I banned the Games because they had declined in quality. Over time, people forgot about the Olympics, and no Games were held for more than 1,500 years. Then, in 1875, a group of German archaeologists came upon the ruins of the Stadium of Olympia. Seeing the ruins inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French educator, to organize a modern international Olympics. He believed that individuals needed to test their athletic skills against others.

In order for the fighters to protect themselves against their opponents they wrapped leather thongs around their fists. Eventually harder leather was used and the thong soon became a weapon. The Romans even introduced metal studs to the thongs to make the cestus which then led to a more sinister weapon called the myrmex (limb piercer).

In 1888 in the USA the Amateur Sporting Union (AAU) was founded and since then annual national championships among amateurs had been conducted. In 1926 the "Chicago Tribune" paper arranged the "Golden Gloves" amateur competitions with the status of national championship, which were competing with bouts arranged by AAU. The law forbidding the AAU to control more than one Olympic kind of sport was passed in 1978 in the USA. That resulted in the USA Amateur Boxing Federation (USA/ABF) establishment, which nowadays takes control over the American amateur boxing. The amateur boxing quickly spread out in all countries worldwide. That resulted in the arrangement of international tournaments, held every year, every two years, or as in the Olympic games case, every four years. European Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan-American Games, All-African Championships, World Military Games are among internationally recognized competitions among amateur boxers.
