Extractions: The first people to inhabit the island were a nation of Arawak Indians called the Caiquetios who migrated north from the Orinoco Basin in South America and settled here approximately 2,000 years ago. Re mnants of their culture can still be found at a number of different sites around the island: pottery, earthenware, and other artefacts at the Archeological Museum in Oranjestad and at the Historical Museum of Aruba at Fort Zoutman and William III Tower; and cave drawings and petroglyphs in the Fontein and Guadiriki Caves and at Arikok National Park In 1499, the Spanish explorer Alonso de Ojeda made his way to this remote corner of the Caribbean Basin and laid claim to the territory for Queen Isabella. According to one tradition, he christened the place Oro Hubo meaning there was gold there, but the name Aruba seems to have derived instead from the Arawak Indian word oibubai which means guide. In any event, the Spanish made little use of the island, finding the climate too arid for cultivation and discovering little evidence of the gold they were eagerly searching for. For the most part, they abandoned Aruba to the Caiquetios for the next 150 years and devoted themselves to other more lucrative conquests. Before long, however, the island became a clandestine hide-away for pirates and buccaneers who preyed on ships transporting Indian treasures back to the Old World. At

Remains of their settlements have been found near the capital and at Lac Bay, and their petroglyphs are visible in caves on the northern side of the island. Within 20 years of their first contact with Europeans in 1499, most of the Caiquetios had succumbed to disease or had been pressed into slavery on Hispaniola. Immigrants to the island tended to be convicts from South America, or cattle and goats for the governor's ranch. Most people lived in small settlements at Rincon, in the north, or Antriol, just north of the present-day capital of Kralendijk. In retaliation for losing St Martin to the Spanish, the Dutch took Bonaire in 1633. The island became a granary for the Dutch West India Company until 1791, when the Dutch government took over the island. Other than the African slaves brought in by the company to harvest corn, salt and lumber, most immigrants to the island for the next 200 years were white overseers. The abolition of slavery in 1864 sent the economy into a slump. The export market dribbled along with castor oil, aloe, charcoal and salted goat meat, but island economists didn't start smiling until the discovery of oil in Venezuela early in the 20th century.

The first European to stumble upon Aruba was Alonso de Ojeda, a compatriot of Columbus, who claimed the island for Spain in 1499. The Spanish took little interest in Aruba, apart from shipping some of the Arawaks to work in mines on Hispaniola. Conflict in Europe between Spain and Holland resulted in the Dutch seizing the island in 1636, and the Dutch began to colonize Aruba at the end of the 17th century. Poor soil and aridity saved the island from plantation economics and the slave trade. Instead the Dutch left the Arawaks to graze livestock on the parched landscape, using the island as a source of meat for other Dutch possessions in the Caribbean. The British arrived in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars but sailed into the sunset in 1816. Less than a decade later, the first of Aruba's three economic booms took place when gold was discovered near Balashi. A flood of gold-hungry immigrants arrived from Europe and Venezuela, and mining continued right up until 1916.
Info Bonaire - Our Bonairean Culture These songs and dances evolved into festivals and have survived to become an importantpart of life and culture on bonaire. Many of the festivals are regional. http://www.infobonaire.com/culture.html
Extractions: Photo courtesy of Jake Richter The Bonairean culture is reflected in the faces of her people. Its origins are as varied as are the ethnic roots of the 11,000 plus residents. The real Bonairean culture is based on traditions that go back many generations and are chronicled in the songs and dances that are performed during holidays and festivals. It is also based on strong family ties and a general respect for nature and an understanding of an environment that originally was foreign to those first settlers and slaves that were forced to work the inhospitable, arid land. Those early days of slavery conditioned the people to be strong and to maintain a spirit that marks Bonaire and her people as extremely friendly and ready to smile when approached. Most of the people will raise a hand and wave to total strangers on the street.

Extractions: I bought this book before going to Bonaire in the summer of 2002. Our group of 4 used it extensively during our stay there and found it very useful in describing the different dive sites. The book does a very good job of describing how to find the shore diving sites, where to park, how to enter the water and what to expect in the water. There is a good map and good broad overviews of the island, the culture, marine life, hotels and resturants. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone planning to go to Bonaire.
