Attention Kayaker's of America indicated that recreational kayaking almost doubled States Coast GuardOffice for boating Safety reported 104 deaths from canoeing and /or http://www.lisaandscott.com/USCG/USCG_kayakers.htm
Extractions: One of the fast growing markets in the boating industry today is that of the Kayaking. There are approximately 280 million Americans, and according to Inc. Magazine, only 30,000 kayaks were sold in 1993. In 1996, an estimated 40,000 kayaks were sold. The National Recreation and Park Association in a recent report stated that "A recent survey by the Outdoor Recreation Coalition of America indicated that recreational kayaking almost doubled in participation from 1995 to 2000 with over 5.1 million current participants (Jenkins, 2001)." That's some jump! And the sad part is the majority of those participating don't really know their little kayak is a vessel, which is required to conform to Federal, State and local laws. Here are some factoids that hopefully will drive home this point: In the year 2000, the United States Coast Guard Office for Boating Safety reported 104 deaths from canoeing and /or kayaking, 93 from drowning. Of all boating fatalities, from all types of boats, 84% of those who died never took a boating course. In 1999, 84 people died in canoeing/kayaking accidents, all but 4 died from drowning. 90% of all boating fatalities were incurred by those who did not have a boating safety course. While the Coast Guard is reporting overall a decline in boating fatalities (each year since 1997), it is the non-traditional boater who is gaining in percentage, where accidents and fatalities come into play. It is the kayaker and the canoeist that don't realize that they, like their power boating and sailing brethren, need to take a safe boating course.

Extractions: Florida Guide to Nature Travel, Ecotourism and Outdoors Adventures Whether you choose a canoe or a kayak, paddling your way through Florida's natural areas is one way to explore our water-rich state and in some places, it's virtually the only way. Most of Florida is a peninsula, surrounded by sea water. With the Gulf of Mexico on the western side of the state, the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern and the Caribbean Sea not far off the southern end, Florida has a lot of shoreline to explore even natural shoreline thick with mangroves that canoes and kayaks seem perfectly made for. But inland, there are a lot of rivers and streams, too, where you can paddle through forests and past meadows. Northern Florida is home to hundreds of springs that invite paddlers to float down their runs. Central Florida is dotted with a myriad of lakes of all sizes. And in southern Florida, the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands are where paddling a canoe or kayak is the best mode of transportation if you really want to see the true River of Grass. There are so many places to take a canoe or kayak that we can't list all of them here; there is so much water in Florida that almost any of the places described on our
