There are now good statistics that summarize the economic importance to specific sites of traveling birders. The American Birding Association has compiled these figures and we have posted the statistics on this site. Traveling birders spend considerable amounts of money on food, drink, lodging, gasoline and other local services. The use of important wildlife sites for commercial development may not be the most beneficial use of the land for the local community, but unless the true economic value of a wildlife site is known, local communities supportive of wildlife conservation are unable to argue their case.
