The Core provides analytical services at all levels of cellular analysis from tissues to individual cells to intracellular structures and molecules. Level of Analysis Services Performed Core Facility The Bioimaging facility enables analysis of tissues and cells through the following services: confocal microscopy, immunofluorescence, and morphometry. It also enables analysis on the molecular level by quantitating nucleic acid levels within cells and tissues. The Flow Cytometry facility provides analysis of cells via immonofluorescence, cell cycle analysis, and functional assays.

Forearm blood flow is fairly simply measured by temporarily occluding the venous return (with a cuff inflated to say 60 mm mercury) and measuring the slight swelling of the distal portion of the limb due to continued arterial inflow. A dramatic decrease in the F-actin staining is observed after 30 minutes of LTP at light microscopic level by laser confocal microscopy. By examination of the photoconverted material at the electron microscopic level were able to determine that the decrease was associated with a depolymerization of F-actin in a mushroom-shaped spines. Most surprisingly we found there to be a proliferation of cytoplasmatic filopodia in the LTP material. Since the filopodia are involved in the spine development these results suggest that an early and previously unrecognized step in the in brains response to stimulation is a large-scale proliferation of filopodia on dendrites and cell bodies. This new finding is being further investigated.

A new field guide, Dragonflies through Binoculars by Sidney Dunkle, was published in 2000 and goes a long way toward helping many of us identify what is being seen. Anyone who leaves home without a library in the back seat of the car will be frustrated. Dragonflies through Binoculars is an obvious choice for starters. However, there are other more regional guides (Wisconsin, Kansas, and even Cape Cod and Florida come to mind) which are invaluable. A popular work on damselflies has not yet been published so the Florida damselfly book is a good one. And once you are hooked... go for the big books which are more scientific in nature but may be necessary for some of the more difficult groups.
