Competitors ski many times around a course as fast as they can, stopping to shoot at targets from a standing or prone position. The prone position is where the competitor lies on his/hers stomach. Biathlon itself is derrived from a Greek word for two contests. The sport was developed first as a means for hunting, then developed for defending one's borders by the Norweigan military. The men will contest four events in the 2002 Salt Lake games; 10 km sprint, 12.5 km pursuit, 20 km individual, and a 4x7.5 km relay. Women will also compete in four events; 7.5 km sprint, 10 km pursuit, 15 km individual, and a 4x7.5 km relay. The men's 12.5 km and women's 10 km events are new for 2002. Competitors are started one at a time at 35 second intervals for the individual events, 30 second intervals for the sprint events, and at intervals based on their time in the sprint events for the pursuit events. Relay events are started in a mass start. Only the top 60 finishers in each sprint event will compete in the pursuit event.
