Extractions: webmaster@paralympic.org The VIII Paralympic Winter Games Salt Lake City 2002 will feature three sports to be contested by some 580 athletes. To ensure the highest level of athlete performances, reflecting the status of the Paralympic Games as elite sport for athletes with a disability, a qualification system has been established for the Salt Lake City 2002 Paralympic Winter Games. Over the last four years, Paralympic winter sports have grown significantly, as seen in the increased number of athletes and countries competing. Under the leadership of the relevant Sports Assembly Executive Committees (SAECs), a qualification system has been developed to allow global and regional access consistent with the development of winter sport. This qualification system was ratified by the IPC Management Committee in January 2001 and the guidelines have been sent to the National Paralympic Committees (NPCs). Details can be obtained from the IPC Sports Department or the IPC website. Events Number of Competitors

Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint

Extractions: AP MIDWAY, Utah (AP) Magdalena Forsberg of Sweden finally has an Olympic medal. Forsberg, the most successful female biathlete in history, missed two targets on her final round of shooting but still won the bronze medal in the women's 15-kilometer biathlon Monday. Andrea Henkel won gold the first Olympic medal for the 24-year-old German and Liv Grete Poiree of Norway took silver at the Soldier Hollow course. Forsberg hit her first 17 shots in the sport that combines the rigor and intensity of cross-country skiing with the precision and calm of marksmanship. But then she missed her next two targets, opening the door for Henkel, a four-time world junior champion. Had Forsberg made just one of the two misses, she would have won. Henkel finished in 47 minutes, 29.1 seconds - a time that included a one-minute penalty for her one missed target in 20 shots. Competitors skied five laps, stopping at the target range for five shots after each of the first four laps. The 15-kilometer individual event is the longest women's biathlon race. Besides skiing a little more than nine miles, the women shoot four times twice in the prone position and twice in the standing position.
