Extractions: Biathlon is the exciting sport that combines the physical demands of fast-paced cross-country skiing with the precision and control of rifle marksmanship. Overall, biathlon is becoming one of the fastest growing spectator sports in Europe. In the event, the biathlete is required to race several kilometers on challenging terrain with a .22 caliber rifle harnessed to their back, and then shoot either standing or prone (lying on the stomach) at targets 50 meters away. Skiing and shooting are alternated, requiring the athlete to push their body to their limits during skiing, and then quickly calm their body and heartbeat enough to be able to hit the targets. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program combines local weekly training with intensive instruction during camps at a variety of training locations in Minnesota and Olympic Training Centers throughout the nation. Along with local training, biathletes participate in camps. Nearly 70 CODP biathletes train throughout the state. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program is the largest and most successful junior biathlon program in the nation.

Extractions: In order for an athlete to qualify in Nordic Skiing (cross-country and biathlon individual) events in the Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic Winter Games, he or she must have obtained an individual result at an IPC/FIS Nordic Skiing-sanctioned competition between 1 March 1998 and 7 January 2002. His or her race time must not be more than 30 percent behind the average time of the first three competitors in his or her class or category, depending on the class system used. If an NPC does not qualify athletes by the above process in this category, the NPC may enter one male and/or one female providing it can be verified that the athlete(s) are of appropriate caliber. Only athletes from NPCs recognized by the IPC may enter competitions in the Paralympic Games. Special Considerations
U.S. Olympic Team Sports, U.S. Olympic Sponsorship - ChevronTexaco task of combining two very different sports crosscountry Officially, biathlon wasadded to the program at the California with a men's 20-km individual event. http://www.texaco.com/support/olympics/docs/saltlake/sports/biathlon/home.html
Extractions: During a biathlon race, athletes have the daunting task of combining two very different sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. What began as a means of survival - skiing to hunt for food and skiing with weapons to defend territory - ultimately became a military competitive sport. Biathlon was included as a military exercise in the first Olympic Winter Games in 1924 and continued as a demonstration sport in 1928, 1936 and 1948, but was removed from the Games after World War II because of post-war sensitivities. Officially, biathlon was added to the program at the 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California with a men's 20-km individual event. In 1968, the four-man relay event was added to the program and the sprint competition was included 12 years later in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. In 1992, women made their Olympic biathlon debut with individual, sprint and relay events in the Olympic Winter Games in Albertville. The men's and women's pursuit events will be contested for the first time in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Nordic nations and Russians have traditionally dominated the sport. Eight biathlon events in the Olympic program combine skiing and marksmanship (shooting at a coin-sized target from a distance of 50 meters). There are four different races and two distinct ways of starting the competitions: one at a time at 30-second intervals and a mass start. Countries are awarded up to six competitors of each gender and a maximum of four athletes per event. A maximum of 220 athletes, 112 men and 108 women, will compete in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
