Extractions: The Algerian Connection by Jacob A. Mundy, Eat the State, 21 November 2001 In a broadcast dating October 25, PBS's Frontline told the tale of a terrorist well known to residents of the Pacific Northwest. Ahmed Ressam, the "Millennium Bomber," was featured in Frontline's "Trail of a Terrorist," an episode that sought to connect bin Laden's Al Qaeda with Algerian Islamic insurgents. Frontline reported: "Ahmed Ressam has been linked to the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), an Algerian extremist group that began conducting terrorist attacks when the government overturned the victory of an Islamic political party in the 1992 legislative elections." Beyond their ruthless and vile campaigns in Algeria, the GIA has been linked to bombings in Paris and the foiled 1994 hijacking of an Air France jet that the terrorists hoped to have the pilots fly into the Eiffel Tower (an attempt thought to be the inspiration for the September 11 attacks). Frontline's website directs readers to the Department of State's Patterns of Global Terrorism, 2000. There the GIA is painted in these terms: "An Islamic extremist group, the GIA aims to overthrow the secular Algerian regime and replace it with an Islamic state. The GIA began its violent activities in early 1992 after Algiers voided the victory of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS)the largest Islamic partyin the first round of legislative elections in December 1991."

Extractions: Sahara , which in Arabic simply means "The Desert." Around 750 AD, under the influence of Islamic peoples, northern and western Africans began to use the camel to transport goods across this forbidding terrain. Camels do several things exceptionally well: they can carry unbelievably heavy loads for impossibly long distances and they can keep their footing on sandy terrain. It was as if someone had invented sand ships and its effect on western African culture was just as profound as if they were sand ships. The most important developments occurred in the Sahel area just south of the Sahara; the Sahel provided southern terminal points for the goods being shipped across the Sahara. The Sahel is a dry, hot area with fertile areas and grasslands; all of the major north African kingdoms grew up in this area: Ghana, Mali, Songhay, and Kanem-Bornu: the Sahelian kingdoms

Extractions: Africa Some 5 million years ago a type of hominid, a close evolutionary ancestor of present-day humans, inhabited southern and eastern Africa. More than 1.5 million years ago this toolmaking hominid developed into the more advanced forms Homo habilis and Homo erectus. The earliest true human being in Africa, Homo sapiens, dates from more than 200,000 years ago. A hunter-gatherer capable of making crude stone tools, Homo sapiens banded together with others to form nomadic groups; eventually these nomadic San peoples spread throughout the African continent. Distinct races date from approximately 10,000 BC. Gradually a growing Negroid population, which had mastered animal domestication and agriculture, forced the San groups into the less hospitable areas. In the 1st century AD the Bantu, one group of this dominant people, began a migration that lasted some 2000 years, settling most of central and southern Africa. Negroid societies typically depended on subsistence agriculture or, in the savannas, pastoral pursuits. Political organization was normally local, although large kingdoms would later develop in western and central Africa. see Aksum, Kingdom of

Extractions: North Africa Links to legal datasheets for countries in this region. Algeria I Egypt I Libya I Morocco I Tunisia Introduction Islam swept North Africa very early in its history, spreading west from Egypt starting in the 8th century A.D. At first it was spread into the cities through conquest, but once the nomadic Berbers began to convert to Islam, it spread through their contacts all across North Africa. While Arab peoples from the East settled in the cities, most of the rural areas remained dominated by Berbers, whose traditions and beliefs were absorbed into the practice of Islam in this area. Starting around the beginning of the 10th century, religious Islamic regimes began appearing in North Africa. Among the most powerful and influential was that of the Almoravids. This was a Berber regime, largely responsible for the spread of the Maliki school of Islamic jurisprudence in Morocco. The Almoravids were followed by another dynasty of Berbers, the Almohads. This regime spread Islam to Spain and much of the rest of North Africa.

Extractions: Islam is the totally dominant religion in Tunisia, and the second largest group in the country are atheists, of which Tunisia probably has the largest group among any North African country (but not more than 3%). Virtually all Muslims are Sunni. There are tiny communities of Christians in the largest cities, these are often descendants of Europeans settling here during the protectorate period. On the island Jerba there are some small communities of Jews, who live peacefully with their Muslim neighbours. Tunsia's population is the result of much migration, occupation and intermarriages. There were many indigenous peoples here some thousand years ago, but Phoenician , Roman, Vandal and Arab conquests have added to the diversity of the population. However today, more than 90% of Tunisians define themselves as Arabs, even if the amount of Arab blood most likely is well under 10%. Their Arab identity is connected to the Arabic language . One of the immigrations is still very important to its descendants: the Banu Hillal , a large tribe that looted the country in the 11th century, before they settled in their own villages.
