The debate as to whether these objects are of pure ethnographic interest or within the world of "fine art" has been quieted with the recognition that these powerful and beautiful objects live in both worlds. Here is art, in the truest sense of the world, with "anonymous" artists... we do not know the names of the individuals or groups who created these pieces, but the lack of a signature on a piece only demonstrates that the culture did not provide for "signature" as we know them. When was the piece created? We have to be careful so that we are not biased by dates. Whatever the culture, African or Western or Oriental, the age of a work has never been a guarantee of its quality. Here at the Art of West Africa we have amassed a collection of pieces that are stirring, powerful, sometimes sexual, haunting and strangely eerie. We invite you to

Extractions: The people who live here are descendants of the Tofinu tribe who moved in from the north in the 18th century to escape domination by the Fon's expanding Dahomey kingdom. Living in huts built on stilts several kilometres away from the shore of the shallow lake made them safe from Fon warriors whose taboos prevented them from venturing on water. Benin is situated in West Africa and is bounded to the east by Nigeria, to the north by Niger and Burkina Faso, and to the west by Togo. Benin stretches 700km (435 miles) from the Bight of Benin to the Niger River. The coastal strip is sandy with coconut palms. Beyond the lagoons of Porto Novo, Nokoue, Ouidah and Grand Popo is a plateau rising gradually to the heights of the Atakora Mountains. From the highlands run two tributaries of the Niger, while southwards the Ouémé flows down to Nokoue lagoon. Mono River flows into the sea at Grand Popo and forms a frontier with Togo. Benin is once again making a name for itself as it embraces democracy with characteristic fervor and is catapulted onto the African stage as a model of reform. Benin is the birthplace of voodoo (voodoo museums of Ouidah). Voodoo ceremonies can be colorful events, involving feverish drumming and highly charged dancing by costumed fetish priests. The pirogue is the name of a traditional boat.

Extractions: With the hardening of ethnic boundaries in modern Nigeria, there is a growing questioning of the uses of names and their origins in our times. Little thought has been given to the idea that before colonial times, person-names and place-names as well as object-names were widespread across ethnic lines. Take the word ekpeti. eki . See how close it is to the Igbo word for market-day, eke . Was one borrowed from the other? It is naive for anyone to rush to easy assertions in such matters. Linguists were astounded in the early decades of the last century when they discovered vast similarities in the languages of southern Africa and those in the Benue-Cameroon area, thousands of miles away, spreading indeed to central and eastern Africa. That led them to the famous Bantu migration hypothesis which postulates that series of migrations that began in the Chad-Benue region, and that covered many centuries, had imposed a common Bantu culture, including a linguistic pattern, on much of sub-Saharan Africa. In matters like this, it is best to assert hypotheses rather than doctrines. This is because we can only guess at the truth. In the realm of widespread uses of person-names, none appears to be more frequent in various southern Nigerian ethnic groups than

Douala (Cameroun) BAMBOU is a shopping site at WAGNE-Internet whose objective is to present and market African traditional and artistic values with the help of the Internet. This form of market and fair takes on an international dimension, thanks to this new technology, inspite of the technical and economic set back that a lot of African countries are facing. There is also the issue of finding out if the total freedom offered by the Internet in marketing handicrafts does not risk contributing to the plundering of the most ancient objects of art. Walking down the streets of Cotonou, it's as ubiquitous to meet men and women draped in the traditional booboo as to see them wearing jeans, the ultimate western attire. This is of course a superficial example further biased by the implied definition of modernity, which I seem to associate with western culture. let's be careful here. In this particular context, let's view modernity as opposed to traditional;

A trip to the Source - Part I T he plane was making its final descent and as required I fastened my seat belt meanwhile looking by the window to see the land where I will walk in less than five minutes. Africa, finally. Close to fourteen hours of travel, I am finally there. I was anxious, I realized, as I peaked at the window once more. What would I find in Africa? I've been raised as many of us to think of it as a "dark continent" inhabited by primitive people, a place where the light of civilization, or rather the light of so-called western civilization has not yet shined upon. I had been raised with Africa but have never met Africa. That was the purpose of my trip: to meet Africa, the true Africa, not the pale and dark shadow endowed to me by my western upbringing. E learnt to identify vodou with evil , for some to even look upon our language with disdain and we have been told not to listen and appreciate drum-based music. It is only recently that
